There is an optional essay on the secondary for UTSW which I am unsure of how to answer. I currently work as a pharmacist in a not-for-profit Hospital and the essay is asking about public service. This is the question:
Have you engaged in any public service activities for a duration of one year or greater in length (examples: Military, Peace Corps, Teach for America, etc.). Yes or No? If so, please describe the experience and impact on your personal and professional development. (Optional)

I am not sure if my job would be classified as being engaged in a public service, or am I not thinking this in the right way?

I would lean towards no. It seems like the spirit of the question is referring to activities where you are uprooted from your regular life to serve the public and receive less-than-competitive financial compensation in return.

Just my interpretation, though.

This has been asked on the TMDSAS facebook page a few times and the general consensus is that this is basically military, peace corps, teach America, and probably fire/police. Anything outside of that is a stretch (unless again, it is clearly a public service such as the previous examples).

No, I would not do it. I work in a not-for-profit hospital as well for less-than-competitive wages (#academicmedicine), and I would never consider myself to be a public servant. By answering yes to this prompt, you may appear like you are trying to "game" the system. Just my thoughts.
