Hi! I did my undergrad at UW. I actually heard that they don't prefer their own....correct me if I'm wrong.

I heard that too. Among the red-headed step child undergrads, I heard that they really prefer the neurobiology guys over others for some reason. Damn. Is it true, however, that if you have +3.5 at UW it's a guaranteed invite?

Good luck with the whole process guys. And I applaud the re-applicants, I really do - talk about determination! 👍

min 3.5 GPA and a 27 MCAT is an automatic invitation. However, they don't even offer you a secondary if you're from out of state unless you're WAMII or an extraordinary applicant. I doubt neurobiology are more preferable, there may be a lot of neurobiologist in the med school b/c I know that most of the people in neurobio wants to go to med school.

I must now post because there has been some inaccurate speculation as to why neuro majors are admitted to medical school so often. Pay close attention as I carefully and simply lay it down for all of you: neuro majors from UW get the job done. We have all done a lot of research (not just the show up for 2 hours a week and run gels kind, but like actual research) and many of us get good letters because we know our faculty well.

Anyway, just thought I'd throw that out there.....5 neuro majors from this years' class and 1 from last years' class have already gotten in.

Finally, I'd just like to tell everyone on this board to stop whining about not getting into UW or having to wait and to just get on with it. In the words of my research advisor, "Be a man and just wait it out like we all did". And stop with all of this calling the admissions office nonsense....do you think they like hearing from psycho premeds all day? Why don't you go have a few beers, turn the TV on and just relax..... Or, I also have some more constructive ideas like you could go forget about the process by busting out some research or watching a long surgery case.....

anyway...just a few thoughts...have a WONDERFUL weekend....

lol. Ok man. I didn't see any incorrect speculation as to why they get in (I said "for some reason" they're preferred, that reason could be that they are superior applicants). Anyways. You don't get any bragging rights for the kind of research the undergrads do...it's nothing spectacular. 👍 Thanks for your input though, champ.

Thanks for your quick response....good to know someone is out there.....anyway...I know my neuro message was a little egotisical...I was just joking...

Buuuuuut, I do think research is critical and as an undergrad you can do all sorts of research...you just have to have a solid work ethic....I know lots of undergrads that have gotten published....and that helps a lot with med school...

A little? How about rude as well. You're giving all of us advice to relax, maybe you should do the same. I think it's perfectly normal for us to be worried, nervous, etc. The outcome of the adcom meeting will change some people's lives drastically.

anyway...have a wonderful weekend

If you are so damn upset, stop reading these posts! I don't like to be rude to people man, but we are just trying to enjoy the process. Whining is a critical part of your personality as a premed, then a medical student and then as a resident

I always wondered what happend to that kid that everyone picked last for dodgeball and pointed at for just plain sucking at my elementary school... Now I know. Are you always such an dingus, or is this passive/aggressive persona a part time hobby? Learn to show a little compassion for those waiting for news that might just affect the rest of their life, it's a trait that's useful in life, except maybe for research. Flame on, bro 👍

Sad, indeed. I thought ole Bogut was going to make the decision easier for you, but he didn't pull through. Now, you need to go on to plan B= Flip a coin off the space needle.

You're wrong. It is untrue that research is the delineating factor to neuro majors getting in. I personally know many non-neuro UW undergrads who have conducted novel research with world class faculty, authoring papers even and they're still getting the cold shoulder from UW admissions. It's only speculation that neuro majors are better off than other majors, although you may feel better about yourself thinking otherwise.

"Real" research is important, but its not the cure to everyones' UW admissions problems.

I def agree with you.....and I wasn't totally serious about the neuro people being such studs....(I just have a little neuro pride, that's all). and yeah, I know a lot of people that did no research and got in to UW....and people that have done TONS of research (first author on papers, presenting abstracts, etc) that didn't get in.....

I think the bottom line is that the process is just very subjective. I'd consider myself very lucky if I got in...

I definitely think this whole admissions process can be rather subjective. I'm a neuro major (2004), went to UW undergrad and I did tons of research (got $$ and publication)...and I'm only on waitlists and this is my second time applying to UW. I don't think they prefer neuro majors b/c I know some in my class that didn't get in to any school they applied to. Or it could just mean I'm just not a fit for the schools I've applied to...who knows. All I know is that the people I met in my neuro class are extremely qualified applicants, not just due to their research experience...they are great people. I would definitely want some of them to be my doctor! I am such a Neuro Nerd. Good luck everyone...the letters should be sent out tomorrow! 😀 We've almost made it through...I know I'm nervous.

Also, I don't know if it's been posted already--it is MIN 3.5 AND 27 MCAT to get invited for an interview. If you don't have that, there will be 3 doctors who will independently review your file...along with Dr. Samson and decide whether or not you will be interviewed. (I think...that's what I've heard).

One of the things that is so appealing about UW is that the vast majority of people are nice, down to Earth, helpful, cool people. You know, the qualities that one looks for in a good physician. It takes more to be a good physician than book smarts and research skills, although those ARE important. There are always those few who seem to miss the boat on that whole concept though. 😉
Good luck this week to everyone.

kiwi-GOOD LUCK, too! can't wait to hear the good news!

nuerosync-your story is an inspiration 🙂 congrats...if i don't see you in the fall, hope to see you next year!!!

So did no one receive anything over the weekend? Any one even have a status change yet? I was really hoping to receive a letter this past saturday since someone in last years thread said that the #1 on the Ranked List got his/her letter on the following saturday. Anyone?

Whoa now. I graduated UW neuro too (2004), and love the neuro program as much as anyone, but I didn't have any significant research experience in ugrad. Moreover, I don't know if my major made any difference whatsoever to the adcom. But it is definitely *untrue* that research is required for UW med school admissions.

Nothing here futuredoc....sorry. I'm sure all the envelopes (or the good news ones) will go out tomorrow! Status change coming soon to a screen near you...hopefully. Good luck! 😀 I'm so scared and nervous, I can't stop freaking. Anyone else with me? Or am I just insane?

007 - suturing a banana...anyone else watching grey's anatomy??? oh i wanna be back in seattle! no status change here this weekend. hopefully hear something tomorrow. kiwi-you're not insane...i'm sure everyone waiting to hear about the UW is scared and nervous, too 😉 i was at a bar in santa monica last night and met some usc/ucla med students. they all thought so highly of UW (almost jealous??? ) --and said they were scared and nervous for me and everyone waiting 🙂 ...the clock is ticking!!!

Absolutely. I liked Grey's Anatomy...I totally see parts of myself in 007--trying too hard- and "izzy"--all that insecurity....now I'm wondering if I want to go into medicine. Just kidding...not surgery for sure. I want to be a pediatric neurologist =p I love it here and don't want to leave! Who's y'all's favorite character?

Barcelona--I hope you make it back to Seattle!! Keep us all posted on the Good news!! My mailman must be afraid of me by now.

No changes for me at 8:45am.

Well, our wait has come to an end. First off, I just want to say that it has been a long and anxious wait for me, and I'm sure for all of you. The process sucked and I let it consume all my time and energy, but in the end it was all worthed. I noticed action was taken on my application, called... and jumped up and down in the red square at 8:30 in the morning when I found out I was offered a position. To those still waiting, wish you the best of luck. To those who are accepted, congratulation. To those who didn't make it this cycle, don't give up hope like I did. Good luck to everyone.

Well, your wait may have come to an end, but not mine! I'm an unranked alternate.... More waiting! I'm not sure how much more I can take! Better than a rejection. 🙂 Congrats cheapdate--HOPEFULLY I'll be seeing you in September! If not, next year, next year, next year I keep chanting to myself. I'm sure I'll meet with Dr. Samson soon--anyone met him? Have impressions to share?

My status changed this morning too, but I'm too nervous to call in and ask. It's hard enough to get through work without having a rejection making it worse. If the news is not good, I'd rather hear it at home. But if the news is good, maybe part of me is afraid of screaming out, "oh my god I got in?! Thank you thank you thank you!" and having all these heads pop out over their cubicles wondering where the sound is coming from. 🙂

I just got rejected! Good luck everyone.
God bless.
kid.

Although, at least I'm accepted into some other schools, so I'm still going to be a doctor! Time to go explore another city.

I met Dr. Samson last year to discuss my application. He was easygoing and friendly.

I was put on the ranked alternate list. Hopefully, it won't take too long to go through the list.

Just called the admis. office and found out I did not get accepted. Oh well. Not sure that I really mind.

Congrats to those who have good news!!! I'm so sorry for the people who won't be going to UW...I would be joining you if I weren't in denial and afraid to call UW. I'm so scared to find out the bad news...esp a few days before another interview. ANYWAY--I was wondering the number you called, who you need to speak to, and what you said? Thanks!! Maybe I should call...

i was afraid to call as well....but i couldnt wait for the letter to get here. I've been rejected....and the woman in admissions acted like she didnt want to tell me. You have to ask specifically to know WHAT action was taken....good luck to all those who haven't heard yet.

I like Dr. Samson. I met with him last year and he gets to decide who gets off the unranked alternate list!! So treat it like a second interview...wear a suit! He's helpful...I did what he told me to do...but I don't know if it helped me since I'm too afraid to find out my status. But anyway, Dr. Samson is friendly and very very straight -forward. Definitely take this rare opportunity to find out exactly what the excomm didn't like about your application/interview (lacking confidence? Low MCAT? or whatevers)...Dr. S was very helpful with that. BEST of luck!

Cheapdate---CONGRATS!! That is toooooo awesome! =p

Thanks Barcelona--I'm so sorry! I know exactly what it's like....I still remember what it felt like to get my rejection letter last year...there's still all the other waitlists. Best of luck with Hawaii!! What an awesome place to go to med school. Anyway, I think I'm going to go out for a run and muster up the courage to call. have fun meeting Dr. Samson. NeuroSync!! You are such a great person! Thank you so much for the encouragement...I'm so nervous but you just put a smile on my face! Best of luck at UW...Now I really wish I was a part of this class to have classmates like you...maybe I'll meet you some day. Oh that's totally the same reason I don't want to call (at least one of the ones I'm telling myself). I almost feel more sorry for the ones who have to give the bad news than hear it. Almost. 🙂 I think the main reason probably is that as long as I don't know whether I'm in or not, there's still a chance for acceptance. It's called denial I guess. Plus I don't want to bug the admissions people. I can just imagine them in the office going, "ok.. the next person who calls to ask about their status is off the list!" And I don't want that person to be me. 🙂

So I received great news today, though it is bittersweet to have good news when I have seen a bunch of amazing people get the short end of the stick on this thread. To those who got in, congrats, it's been a long road. To those who weren't so fortunate, you know that the world needs you as a doc and you know that you are dedicated to the pursuit of becoming a doctor, so keep working for it and you'll get the acceptance you deserve. Well, now the question for me is whether I'll be at UT-Houston or UW next fall, so much for easy decisions... See ya

Thanks Kiwi! I'm leaning toward UW, since my interest is in underserved medicine and there is probably no better school in the world for that focus than UW. That, plus the fact that I'm used to the cold and not the heat makes returning to the pac NW all the more lucrative. That said, UT-H is still an awesome school with a strong MPH program, it's cheap and I could afford to buy a small place to live here in order to avoid wasting 5 years of rent money. Tough decision, but I am pretty damn lucky to have the chance to make it. On another note, as much as waiting sucks, your acceptance will hit your mailbox in no time. It's like a post-dated check in acceptance letter form 😀 Good luck!
