First, on the whole goeduck thing, I'm a big scuba diver, and while I don't mind playing with those guys underwater, I cannot imagine eating one. As for being a mascot, well...OK. 😛

Second, I am an example of being pulled out of the pool twice. The first time was last year. Around mid-February, I was pulled out and rejected, having lingered for a month in the competitive pool. The second time was this year. I interviewed in early October, was placed in the pool, and pulled out and accepted January 21st. So it can go either way.

So wait, they actually pulled you out of the pool last year to reject you before the three day marathon in March? I thought they kept everyone in there until the end of March and the only time you can pulled out is for an acceptance?

I guess I was just lucky. I was so discouraged, that I almost didn't reapply. But I did, and look what happened this year. You just never know...

That's what seems weird to me.. it doesn't make sense that they'd pull people out of the competitive list to reject them... wonder if that happened to anyone this year... 🙁

Happened to me! This week. I was in the pool since early February.

Bummer, dude.

But I'm re-applying next year. I'll really show 'em 🙂

You got pulled out earlier than us WA applicants because you're WWAMI. They have already sent their waitlists. Us WA kids still have one more normal EXCOM meeting (3/16) then we have the 3-day rejectathon which is where they make final decisions and waitlists. Either way, sorry about your news and best of luck to you next year. :luck:

Hahaha rejectathon is the word of the month.

not so -- I'm ID WWAMI and am still treading water.

i meant "alaskan" WWAMI, which Sarikate is. ID WWAMI are being constructed as we speak...I just got off the phone with an advisor. is that better?

Get any details about WA residents from this conversation with the advisor?

I suppose. 🙄

actually I think MT and WY lists are done as well.

The final Idaho decisions are made tomorrow. Good luck to those who are still waiting! :luck: I certainly feel blessed, lucky, overwhelmed, and excited to be done with this horrible process.

I got out as much as I could but it wasn't much. Basically, they have been really busy this past week finalizing the ID kids and are in the process of finalizing their lists today and tomorrow. Hence, there has been very little action on the WA peeps but will be the focus all of next week and then of course the 22-24 is their last meeting dates to finalize our decisions and lists. My best guess is that around 75% of the WA seats have been filled thus far.

I remember reading a thread from last year, where someone had actually spoken with an EXCOM member who said that there were only 8 seats left for the WA kids by the time they got to the 3-day meeting. So according to that statement, it doesn't sound so reassuring.

That is exactly how I felt when I got one of the Utah seats. That huge sigh of relief that washes over you is great. It's a little more nerve racking not having a state school to fall back on.

only 8? jeeze.. wait.. 8 total? or 8 + 25 ranked list that is will be pulled from?

I think they meant that there were 8 seats left PLUS the 25 ranked list PLUS the 25 unranked list. Either way, thats still very few seats considering there are about 300 people still left in the pool. Anyone have any confirmed numbers out there? I found the old thread and copied the post below.

(Posted in last years UWash competitive pool thread around this time last year)
"...okay everyone... i got the inside scoop. i had an informal conversation with a member on the excom last night. i was told that there are exactly 8 spots remaining for WA residents and they will be filling them over the next 3 days as well as compiling the rank and unranked waitlist. if/when the rank list is exhausted, dr. samson picks from the unranked list by himself...."

Well, that is rather disheartening. Not sure how many I thought were left, but 8 of 300 some seems like rather rough odds.... Who all has a back-up/other possibility for next year and who is reapplying (like me) if it doesn't happen this year? Or is it too early to ask--does it feel like giving up hope to think about this already? 🙄

so much for 51% chance... i think 300 people waiting is a little inflated isn't it?

i feel like all us pool floaters are getting too negative and speculative about the process. it is fun to theorize and we can try to lessen the blow of a rejection by expecting the worse. but face it folks, for all we know we still have a 51% chance of being in or darn close to it. while i'm not cracking open any champagne, i feel like we are in an ok position. keep those heads up.

I agree! Try not to focus on the speculation of spots left. For all I know, they logistically went about the process differently this year, or quite frankly the person from last year may have been full of it. We all still have a chance of being accepted, bottom line. And I for one am not going to give up hope unless I happen to get that thin envelope in my mailbox!!
Even then, it won't be the end of the world. All of you must be intelligent and qualified, or you wouldn't have gotten this far. We'll all find something worthwhile to do next year, even if it isn't med school ... yet!

STAY POSITIVE!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂

Thanks for the optimistic reminder--I'm certainly not giving up, but just trying to be realistic and prepared for WHATEVER! But you've got the main point--WE DON'T KNOW what they're up to this year (or ever)! Besides, even if it is 8 of 300, any one of us (or many of us) could be in that 8, right? I definitely needed those cheerful posts. 🙂

Fat AK rejection today. No waitlist. That's nuts. I thought for sure I could at least make it into the top 10 Alaskans. No need to be bitter, I guess, I'm sure there were some top-qualified people. Sarikate, I think I met you on the interview day. February 2? Anyways, best of luck to the Alaskans who get to go, it's a cool place.

Do us out-of-region kids get a crack at the competitive pool or do we just get flat-out accepted or rejected? I interviewed on Monday and am looking for a miracle in the way of a large envelope from UW to bring me back north for the fall. Are rejections emailed or old school mailed? Here's to sweatin' it out 👎

That sucks, my friend. Any hope from other institutions out there? Good luck, it'll work out in the end.

Rejection came regular mail, thin envelope. Yeah, I got in some places and I'm gonna be a doc, so it's not too Earth-shattering. It woulda been nice to stay tied to Alaska though, I miss that place something awful down here. Plus UW is a paradise, they really produce some wonderful docs there. I just really wonder what went wrong; I wish I coulda been there at the meeting, just for closure so I don't have to continue asking myself. But I'll get over it soon enough. I assume from your post you're Alaskan too?

PS ajnak182, good luck. At least it oughta go to someone else who's really dying to be back in AK. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Just a word of encouragement to my fellow Alaskans, I totally got rejected by UW last year too, reapplied this year and I have moved up the food chain a bit. Now I'm alternate #2, so it's not an acceptance yet, but at least it is progress. If you really have your heart set on UW, totally reapply, and have a positive attitude about it, they like it. It shows dedication.🙂 Good luck!

I agree. This is my second year applying. tlex also applied last year, was rejected, and was accepted early this year. They seem to favor reapplicants. In fact, a significant part of the class is composed of reapplicants. Therefore, if your heart is set on UW, it may not hurt to get a deferral to the back-up school to which you were accepted and try again next year. It worked for some of us.

Sorry to hear of the rejections. They sting pretty bad...

Yourfriend, I probably did meet you that day! Sorry to hear the news...although it's excellent that you have other options. I am on a couple of waitlists elsewhere but I really want to stay in Alaska, so I'll be re-applying no matter what. Have to re-take the MCAT this August for sure, though - there goes my blissful Alaska summer!

you're not taking it in April? You'd better get a 46 on it or else I'll steal your cats and leave them in an anatomy lab here at UW. How's that for motivation? 😉

I've gotten a tentative diagnosis of Crohn's disease, man...there's no way I can take it so soon with this crap that's going down (literally)! I promise I'll get a 46U!!!

I am pretty sure that we are not competing for 8 seats during the final adcom meeting. The pre med advisor told me that they might have accepted around 60-65 people(WA residents) so far. No way that number is as high as 92. So, we are competing for about 40 spots, then another 25 for the ranked list, and another 25 or so for the unranked list. And, I believe there are about 225-250 applicants left in the competitive pool.
Good luck.
God bless.
kid.

🙂 that and people will be dropping UW too...

So we're still looking at an approx 51% from that pool to be accepted or put on another list to wait some more... at least that's what it sounds like from the numbers. I called last Thursday and was told that my file had been pulled for review a couple of times but that the excom had not gotten to my file... so it went back into the "to be reviewed" pile... sigh.

🙁

Hey everyone, my SO just bought a rental home in Shoreline (just north of the U) if anyone is interested. I just went to see it yesterday and it's very nice... it has a park behind it and no neighbors immediately to the right or left-- 3 bedrooms, 1 bath, fireplace, washer/dryer, 3 blocks from a busline that we believe goes to UW (bus route 77). PM me if anyone's interested or knows anyone who's interested.

Don't forget that you can call for the results if you are like me and cannot stand to wait! 😉

Any WA residents hear anything lately? Anyone hear how many of us are still treading in the pool lately? Nuerosync, got any updates on numbers for us?

I dunno, but I'm still in the pool, and I think there are a lot of people just like you and me unfortunately. I wish we were the only two; then our chances of admission would be increased substantially.

I'm an Idaho applicant but I work at UW here in Seattle. I think I can wait for hte news -- pretty sure it's a rejection but that's okay because I'm happy where I'm in.

Do you think one could get this info by calling the admissions office? Or have you tried already?

I called last week but they said that they have been working very busy to finish up the ID kids, so she didn't have any updated numbers on us. I want to call but I don't want to bother them too much. If any of you decide to, PLEASE let us know!

BTW, how sweet is the fact that we got a #1 Seed! Unbelievable!!! 👍

the #1 seed was shocking...lets hope they play like a #1 (like they can). Also, I must show my real stripes...Go ZAGS!

I haven't heard anything on the numbers. I don't think much has changed for the WA applicants, though. I think the focus has been on the other states. Things should start to move very quickly now, though. Good luck to everyone. We will all know our fates soon! 🙂

I can be very slow... What does that mean?

For the NCAA B-Ball tournament starting this Thursday. UW along with Illinois, UNC, and Duke are the #1 Seeds, which is a very elite group of teams. Go Huskies!

Montana's gonna be a tough hurrdle for the Dogs, I dont think we'll make it past the first bracket.
FYI, no #16 team has EVER beaten a #1 team. Although I think a #16 team has beaten a #2 team.

Question:
Does anyone know when we can begin calling Admissions after the final meeting? Or any clue when letters will arrive (or got sent out last year?) I dont want to waste a $1K deposit due April 1st, in the chance that UW actually thinks Im not a worthless pos.

3rd year re-applying, one more strike and Im out!

I dont think the Dawgs will have any problems against Montana. You really think that they wont beat them?

As for letters, I got my fat rejection last year on April 1st.

Does anyone know if it's possible to send in updated grade from winter quater before the final adcom meeting? This week is final's week at UW and grades will probably not be on until next week. But adcom will meet on Wed next week for final decision, so I was wondering if it is possible to write a short update of this quater's grade and turn it in on monday, even though it will probably not show up on the transcript until after the adcom meeting.
