You PIN is the first two letters of your last name and the last 7 digits of your social security number.
They don't update your application status when you are put into the competitive pool, however. It will be updated when they accept, reject or waitlist you, however.

I checked the site amd I was unable to get through.
Last week, an email was sent to me indicating that I update my transcript or else my application will be dropped, I sent the transcript in addition with a letter that has a 'letterr of interest' undertone in it. When I later called them, the lady did not ask for my aamc ID but told me she could not give out any information over the phone. Could this have something to do with it?

I don't have any idea how to interpret that. I do believe that most schools have rules against giving out information about acceptances/rejections over the phone, but I have no idea how steadfastly they abide by those rules in all cases, and I have no idea whether they are allowed to give out other related information.
Thats odd, from the posts of the people who applied last year to UWSOM, the staff usually gave fairly straight answers to the status of their application. Was your question related to something other than that?
Hey guys, I know how you feel with all of this waiting. I am a first year student who interviewed last October, and was accepted in February. There are a number of people in the class who were accepted before March from the competitive pool. So don't give up hope. Good luck.

Don't know exact numbers. Of the people that I am close to in the class, I would say about a dozen. But there could be more that I don't know about. We honestly don't talk to much about the whole admissions process, probably b/c most of us just want to forget about it.
One thing you can do, is call the admissions office, and ask if any action has been taken on your file (I don't think it is the same thing as just checking online). I think they can tell you if your file has been discussed at previous meetings, besides just the initial throw the file into the competitive pool decision. When I called, nothing had happened with my file, but the lady did tell me that my "advocate" would be at the meeting (which is another very key factor). If your advocate isn't at a meeting, I don't think that your file will come up.
No, I simply stated that I wanted to check the status of my application.

i should add "the next date for considering wa applicants [in the competitive poo] is feb. 14th." people who haven't heard yet post interview should be reviewed before then.
i haven't heard of an applicant having a student as his excom interviewer yet. Has anyone?

My excom member was indeed a 4th year. During the interview he was very quiet and took a more observant role only asking two very generic questions at the very end. I hope he advocates for me well.
hello fellow pool members. could someone clarify the difference between waitlist and competitive pool? i got the usual "still under consideration" letter.
Being part of the competitive pool means that you are on hold until later in the interview season while they interview more candidates before deciding on you. This can go no later than the end of the interview season, after which time they decide on their full list of initial offers. This differs from the waitlist (as usually intended), where you may be put as a backup option for the school, and where you can languish well into the spring and summer waiting for people who were initially offered a spot to give it up when they decide to go elsewhere.
I'm very disturbed by the games of the UWSOM's admissions department. I was accepted 2 years ago, 7 months after I interviewed. By then, I had formally accepted another offer and had signed a lease at my new apartment (on the east coast) so it was too late.
I would have attended if they had come through earlier. I had a 4.0 in Chemical Engineering at WSU, a 30+ MCAT, and was a WA resident. They interviewed me on the first day of interviews (automatically screened) and I felt the interview went well, but for whatever reason, they took their sweet time accepting me. The school that I'm at now only took 10 days after my interview to accept me.
It was all for the best b/c my (now) fiance came to the east coast for graduate school, but I left Washington with a bad taste in my mouth for the U. I feel the policy of having a waitlist with hundreds of names on it is dishonest and compounds stress levels for those applicants. UW is getting their cake and eating it too. Other schools of their caliber can do this too if they wanted to, but choose to do the right thing and give people a yes or no within a reasonable time period.

I hope I don't have to wait that long. I interviewed in dec and I was told 2day that my appl will be going through a comittee this week (they are still uncertain about this). I like the school but if I will be made to wait for seven months...
Another thing to keep in mind is that UW has two waitlists. Once the interview season is finished, those who are neither rejected nor accepted are put on either the ranked waitlist (ranked 1-25) or the unranked waitlist. As spaces become available, people are accepted from the ranked list in order of their position. Once that list has been exhausted, they move to the unranked list, and I have no idea how they decide who gets re-evaluated. For several years now, everyone on the ranked list has ultimately been offered a position, and a few from the unranked list have been invited as well. So, if you find yourself on the ranked list, you can pretty much count that as an acceptance, though it won't be official for a while. If you end up on the unranked list, I don't know what your chances are, but they aren't good. As THESAUCE has just described, the news can come late, which is super inconvenient. I for one will hold out for UW if I get on the ranked list, but will not hold out for them (unless I have no other choices) if I get put on the unranked list.

so I didn't get any email from them today, but checked my status and it says that action was taken on my application and i will get postal mail soon. There are 2 sets of interviews for my state, the first of which was last week.
Do they do a lot of rejections after that first set of interviews? or do they wait to do rejections after the 2nd set? I didn't think my interview was that great bc I was nervous, but now I am scared!

I have no idea how the process works for Montana applicants, but you can call them up (from what I read, uwsom usually would tell you whether you got in or not over the phone), or wait a couple of days for your letter to arrive. Good Luck

It's normal to hear from them about a week or 10 days after your interview, Journeygirl. Either you get a definitive answer (an acceptance or a rejection), which shows up on your status page as action taken and shortly thereafter a letter informing you in the mail; or you get put into the competitive pool, informed by e-mail, and your status page doesn't change. It looks like you're going to know for sure in a day or two. Good luck to you! I sure wish they would tell me definitively what my fate is.

thanks to everyone that catered to my naivity. I thought UWSOM was uni of wisc but it's indeed washington - taught as much.
Posting for the previous Q though, I have had 7 ints so far and I am still waiting to hear from them.

if you get accepted you also get an email telling you so. and the definitive answer just depends on when the EXCOM meeting is. They're usually all on friday and if you hear, it's gonna be that following monday
Interesting. They've explicitly said that acceptances and rejections only come by way of snail mail, not e-mail; but since you've been accepted, I defer to your experience.
My interview was on a Monday, and the next excom meeting was Friday of the same week. I received my e-notice of competitive-pool status the following Wednesday. You're right, of course, that it depends on when the next excom meeting is, and also on whether your advocate is available to attend that meeting. I had a friend whose advocate wasn't able to attend for a month after her interview last year. Lame.
Well one of my friends here at Central Washington Univ. just got an email telling him he was accepted. He deserves it though (you know pre-med president of every club, great MCAT & GPA etc) and he had a nice hook up at his interview since it was the same interviewer who accepted his sister last year (it may also help that his father is a local cardiologist). Anyways you can get accepted via email. Good luck all.

Does anyone know if UW posts recent residency match lists? Their website lists stats for different specialties but not the specific residencies.
Also, does UW host a Second Look Weekend, or do most people just take an individual trip back to Seattle if they want another visit?

Anecdotal support for Grobular: I interviewed in November and my application was just reviewed. Strangely and frustratingly I have been asked to come in for a follow-up interview, which is definitely not the result I would have liked. We'll see if I can do better this time.

Wednesday. I got a voicemail in the early evening on Tuesday asking me to call back as soon as possible about my interview, which I did the following morning. Needless to say my sleep was compromised that night. I knew that it couldn't be a rejection, because those are only delivered via post; I was virtually sure that it couldn't be an acceptance, because I had never heard of them calling anyone on the phone, though I was hopeful. Instead it turned out that they had reviewed my application and there had been a divergence of opinion in the committee, so they wanted to interview me again. I'm trying to decide how best to approach this, but there were no clues during my first interview that anything I had said had troubled my interviewers especially, so I really have no idea what specific elements of my self-presentation I should work on. Maybe my conversation was just so scintillating that they want to give their friends the chance to talk to me. 😳
