Shouldn't you guys find out tomorrow whether you're In, Rejected or Waitlisted?

No, March 31/April 1ish... the final Excom meetings are March 26, 27, and 28. Jenny at the admissions office said that they'd be notifying us early the next week of outcomes.

It seems so far away. Will any of us hear back sooner? On their schedule it looks like they have excom meetings every week.

Yeah true. Any maybe I'm a little bitter still that a 29 wasn't strong enough to get me in last year. (Although, in retrospect, I had a mediocre interview, and not many strong ECs back then).

PJ is right, no red flags...but the applicant with a 27 on the MCAT doesn't leave much room for insurance in other parts of the app.

And to doc henry, take into consideration the comments on USC. Also, are you aware that their financial aid package is in the $65-70K range?? (That ends up being a lot of debt to repay after four years)

USC is purely on there for location reasons. I have given it a lot of thought, but because my family is all on the west coast I have to give it a shot. I agree with your criticism about my app, and know I will be a very weak applicant there, and I may not even fill out the secondary when the time comes, but I want the option.

Also, you are correct that I haven't taken the MCAT yet. I, of course, am holding out for a 30, but more and more I just feel like I'll never get there...bleh (having a bad day)

Don't worry, I'm not holding out for UW. Obviously, it's my #1 choice, but I am looking very seriously into what other schools offer because I know that UW is still a reach

Thanks for the time and effort you put in to looking me over! I appreciate it

Good luck to all the Idaho people today. Looks like they're supposed to be deciding on that today!

What's up y'all...

No more excom meetings til the end now... I doubt they'd review any of us today, but you never know...well, i guess you'd know come monday if there's a change....but i'm pretty sure it was strictly idaho.

I'm way bored at work. So I'm reading old UWSOM threads and waiting for someone else to join me in this one.

Anyone got other acceptances? If so, where from? I've got six rejections and five pre-interview holds (which at this point, realistically, are rejections...) so it's the UW or bust. Since UW has always been far and away my top choice, I'm not lamenting the silence of the other 5 schools, but please UW, let me in! I've been treading water in this pool for nearly six months...

Hey, so here's an idea. Anyone brave want to call and ask how many folks are in the pool waiting for how many spots (IS)? Last year it was 400 for 30... Be interesting to know how our odds stack up, but I haven't got the guts to call.

Y'all seem like nice folks so I hope it works out for all of us!

I've got nothing else period yet. I interview at Creighton two weeks from today, and I find out from Georgetown in about 10 days whether or not I will interview here. I'm hoping it doesn't matter...I just want UW, and UW only (though Creighton has always been a close second, so i could live with them as a backup)... but in my shoes, I have to take what I can get... It's funny to think about interviewing soon, as the season is pretty much over everywhere else.... I still have yet to hear from NYMC, Drexel, and St. Louis, who are notorious for sending interview invites late to people in my program. NYMC showed interest in me, but they lost one of my rec letters (then blamed it on me, asking me to send another one) so I'm still waiting to hear from them...

Again, I just hope none of this ends up mattering...😎

And a hearty "ME TOO!"

I went skiing today so as to avoid the brutal reality for another day.

In reference to the bolded above^ ... two other quotes come to mind
"You get what you get and you don't throw a fit"
"Beggars can't be choosers"

Where'd you go? And how was the snow?

Stevens... it was pretty good. There were a couple inches of fresh, with more coming down the whole time I was up there. It wasn't light fluffy powder b/c it was right at or just below freezing, but it wasn't too mushy either. And there was no one up there. 🙂

sounds like a better Friday then mine. I took a biochem exam and then went to work all day. (sigh)

Isn't it the end of the month already?

Nice! Sounds really tempting.. 😀

Hi everyone. I am an Idaho resident considering applying to UW this next year. Do people in the Idaho program have to sign a payback agreement (have to pay x amt. if you do not practice in Idaho)? I have heard rumors of this, but I have not found a definative answer. If they do, can you give me some info on what the actual agreement is.

Thanks,

mtlove

Yeah, I definitely blew off work to go ski (and by blew off, I mean told my boss I was taking the day off). I'm contemplating repeating this scenario daily until the end of the month... whaddya think my boss would say? I agree, though, the end of the month is sure taking its time getting here. I'd like to be able to move on and start figuring out the next year of my life, no matter how it works out.

what are you thinking about for a plan b? I'm trying to formulate one myself...

Plan B. Yech...thinking about plan B is too negative for me, and will only do it once I have to...

I just spent the last 30 hours in new york city. Was a fantastic removal from graduate studies, and thinking about UW. In fact, I didn't really think about it once, it was nice. First time to NYC also...pretty astounding city....still confident in wanting to spend my life in Seattle though...

one of my friends just got rejected right after her interview. apparently they told her that she didn't know how hard life was. Not sure what that means though. She had a 3.5 and i think had an mcat score in the mid 20s (possibly another factor).

Thats not a very nice thing to say. Its hard to judge how hard one's life is from an application and a 30 minute interview. Do you know when she interviewed and whether she was in state/OOS?

I believe she's instate. I heard from a friend that she also help start a new clinic (al shoofa or something like that) at the UW as well which surprises me a lot. yeah, i d k what to expect from the UW.

They weigh the interview pretty highly and value life experience. I've heard of people with a low MCAT score get in while people with MCAT scores of 35+ get rejected. So, yeah, sometimes the process seems random. But I guess they know what they want and you can always go to the exit interview.

i heard that too!

Well, maybe I'm not TOTALLY out of luck yet... just mostly. Stupid MCAT.

Can anyone else access the UW status page? I'm getting a notification that rainier's down and don't know if it's tech trouble or they took it down. But now I have no way to obsessively check on my status every 2.53 microseconds for the next two weeks!

just checked and can't access it either. 🙂

In case anyone was feeling sorry for themselves for not having any acceptances, I not only have no acceptances but also now no job. Owing to the never-ending hemorrhage called funding in academia, I just got laid off. And, until the UW gives me some news, I'm not even in a good position to job-hunt.

So now, I'm not sure if I should find another tech job (temp vs long-term), start EMT training, look for an epi research job...

Go me. I'm part Irish... isn't St. Paddy's supposed to be lucky for we Irish? Guess not.

/feeling sorry for self.

Sorry to hear that friend.

1) Get Drunk
2) Starting tomorrow, do some research on EMT training, and where you can take classes..
3) Go to LabTemps or Kelly Services. Both have temp-finding services.

**Or just wait til Mar. 31st.. how unfortunate, now you'll be able to think of nothing else but the UW decision....perhaps this IS lucky. Once you're in, you can start partying until registration....

sorry HIV doc...

It's been a while, but last time I temped in the Seattle area I used Randstad (they have an office downtown) and they set me up at a gig at Amgen that was nice...

thanks for the tips, guys. and the sympathy. (and the vote of confidence, Dane! "once you're in..." - awesome)

I now return you to your regularly scheduled UWSOM thread...

I suppose I should get in on this. I am also in the "competitive applicant pool/swamp." Don't know how long I can keep treading water though.

Welcome to the "swamp" XT777, are you a WA resident living in CA or an out-of stater? 🙂

current CA resident, but former MT resident for 20+ years

Traditionally, UW has loved out-of-region applicants...I like my chances

Traditionally UW has loved out-of-region applicants?? While they do like to bring in some people from out of the state, the majority of people at the school are in state or WAMI folk. I think last year they interviewed about 100 out of state folk, 16 or so of which ended up matriculating... I don't know if that includes the MD/PhDs either, which would account for 8 I think, and are typically all out of state...

I could be wrong though... are you being considered for the MT pool, or the out of state pool?

P.S. You only need to keep treading water for 13 days...

I think most of the OOS screening happens pre-interview.

Oh man, sorry to hear that. Hopefully UW gives you AWESOME news! (Err.. gives us all awesome news 😀

13 days feels like an eternity. I swear I just keep replaying all the ways I might have screwed up that interview.

At least he gets a cool souvenir (unless someone grabs it on the rebound).

But yeah... 13 days is a long, long time... :scared:

sarcasm never translates well online. I don't have any idea how I am still in this "pool."

Ha. Guess not... sorry, that kind of makes me look like an ***.

I thought you were super over-confident about your position, and while I didn't want to crush your hopes, was going to try and bring some reality to the situation.

On the bright side, from what I know this year so far, OOS applicants still sticking around are in better shape than they probably realize. There was a Utah resident who grew up in MT his whole life, who recently got bounced from the pool....perhaps the "out of state applicant who grew in up Montana" seat is holding a plaque with your name on it.....

At any rate, you're in good shape right now...we all are... (hopefully...)

Ha. Guess not... sorry, that kind of makes me look like an ***.

Imagine three doctors all sitting around a table, looking uncomfortable and disgusted. Picture, at the head of the table, a chair. On this chair, picture a dirty sock, half crumpled up, half hanging limp off the edge of the chair, and all moist and stinky.

Now you have got a pretty good idea of how my interview went.

Yes! - I am saying that I have the interview skills of a dirty sock.

don't worry about looking silly, it got me in the "competitive applicant pool" apparently..

You must have done AT LEAST as good as a fresh athletic sock to still be around....

You had three docs?? Yikes. I at least got a medical student in mine that hardly talked...all he did was set up my role playing scenario.

I'm not sure if I'll admit to having the interview skills of a dirty sock, but I will agree that my interviewers looked not particularly interested or excited about me throughout the whole of the interview. It was a very strange experience.

This discussion of socks is cracking me up. You guys rock.

I thought my interview went terribly, but with my MCAT score, I wouldn't still be treading water if it had gone that badly.

And the days drag on...

Hey, does anyone know of NGOs that would hire someone without any medical skills but for a more clinically oriented job? I'm kicking around ideas for my next two years off (just in case the UW doesn't come through for me).

I interviewed pretty well I thought, but obviously not good enough to get outright accepted already. These stories surprise me, because both UW interviews i have had, the interviews "looked" genuinely interested in what i had to say... maybe they weren't though...hard to say...

I'd compare myself to a nice dress sock you could find at TJ Maxx or Marshall's or something: I feel like I'm pretty decent, but unsure of why I'm stuck in mediocre purgatory... but also happy to be snatched up in the end..

Alright folks. I am off to Honduras for 7 days. Don't have too much scintillating conversation without me, because I definitely won't be spending what tiny little internet time I may have checking studentdoctor. (No offense)

Woohoo, post 250!
