Yes, I interviewed in CP. I know everyone had the same interviewers, so maybe they just ask those same questions of everyone. The one guy worded things very vaguely, and I found it a bit hard to figure out what question, exactly, he wanted me to answer.

The guy on the left, right? Not the tall guy, but the other one....

Haha, oh yeah, I think it was him. He was sitting to my right, but to the left of the other interviewer. They were really nice! They just asked hard questions. 🙁

So, for all those who are attending ow hoping to attend VMRCVM, why this college? Beyond in-state reasons, what makes it special?

I have an interview there on Wednesday and have done my own research but I was just looking for input as to why people made their personal decision.

Thanks!

Research, internal medicine, Blacksburg, people 🙂 Macado's restaurant😀

The faculty - all of them are incredibly intelligent and more importantly VERY helpful to the students. Tons and tons of boarded diplomates from every professional society I can think of. They all seem very excited that we are here and love to talk to us and teach us.

The students - friendly, laid back, none of this cut-throat competitive junk....we all know we're here to help each other.

Infectious disease research - huge!

Our awesome on-call large animal service. Cow with a RDA at 3 am? Here we come!

Blacksburg area in general - I love being able to see the mountains wherever I go. Hiking, rafting etc....

Tracking 😍

Dr. Lanz 😍 (I just hope he never finds out it was me who wrote down "origami test" instead of "Ortolani test" for a way to determine hip instability our latest orthopedics test)

The very tight-knit, family-like nature of the town, despite how many students are here.

and of course HOKIE FOOTBALL!!!

Kyle check your PMs - I was a silly forgetful goose.....

Awww, that's kind of a cute mistake!

During a math class in undergrad, I forgot whether a certain formula had to be multiplied or divided. I solved it both ways and wrote a note saying "I can't remember the whole formula - one of these is correct." I ended up with partial credit, but the professor was going over exams and said "And someone in the class forgot the formula and solved it two ways with a note. You can't do that in the future, okay guys?" I tried really hard to blend in with everyone else and laugh. 😳

He was on my cold team. Is he normally very quiet? I thought it went well, but I guess I'll find out Monday...Eeek.

Yeah, he's not a big talker unless it's about surgery. Then its like a kid talking about dinosaurs.

"Is it ok to use a just pins to stabilize a femur fracture?" The answer is 'NO'. If you put 'HELL NO!' on the exam I will probably give you a plus-one-super-bonus point! By the way PennHip is a million times better than OFA, why can't I teach an ortho surgery course, blah blah...." He does teach advanced small animal surg though.

The first time you meet him, you think he is a pompous...well, yknow 😉 The second time you meet him, you realize he's really smart and just has that very dry, sarcastic sense of humor and really loves what he does.

Is this Monday the 19th that ya'all find out? Wow that's quick!! Luck:luck::luck: to you.

Yes. Thank God! Monday 18th! I think if it was any longer, I'd lose my mind. I know you guys had to wait for 3 weeks or so? Thanks for good luck wishes!

so about that Monday the 18th.... lol... I realized that is a holiday (President's Day), so no mail. Are people going to call Miss Joyce and ask? I have been debating and debating in my mind whether to do so. What do you guys think?

interesting.... when i was there last thursday for my IS interview she said she would be sending letters out on the 15th and we could call on the 18th. I wish they would just email us all and save us the agony!🙄

She specifically told us to call on the 18th. So I'm going to do just that. I don't think it's a holiday for VA-MD, so Joyce should still be able to tell us our future =)

I, too, thought that I heard her say that they would be making calls this Friday ( but am not positive, as my brain has been clouded with anatomy and parasitology all week).

If it's any help, last year, those who were accepted received phone calls the Friday after the last interviews (so that would be this week) even though the date she told us we could "call" was the week after that... at least that was how it was for VA residents. Its quite exciting when you realize what the person calling you is saying!

Good luck to all!:luck:

And where do MD residents fit in here? Our interview instructions say to call on the 22nd because thats when letters will be in the mail by...

Ours did, too. It's just that Joyce told us earlier when we interviewed. She said she put the later date on the interview invites to create some buffer, but it seems like she/they don't need the buffer time after all. I'd call, too, if I were you. 🙂

When I was at the interview I asked about the dates to clarify and she (obviously not Joyce, can't remember her name) said the 22nd. If I remember correctly they did end up getting everything out early last year too... I don't think I want to call though... Last year they seemed to call everyone that they accepted before they even told us we were allowed to call to find out.

i know for out of satat at least Mrs. Massie said they would be calling tom! Get excited! I love Va-Md! Did anyone else interview on Monday?

I think I sort of feel that way, too. And knowing they call with acceptances means I'm going to be obsessively watching my phone for the next few days. Ugh. I'll just have to keep myself really busy!

I do appreciate that they allow you to call. Some other schools I applied to didn't send out letters when they said they would and would NOT release any information over the phone. At least with VA-MD you know that you CAN call on the 18th and find out one way or the other. For me, having an exact date makes it a little easier. Of course, knowing that they could call today makes it a little harder especially with my P-Chem test today.

Well...I was really really hoping to hear something from VMRCVM today...no such luck. This weekend is going to be SO LONG, and I have IL interview on Monday, so I won't even be in the state...🙁

It's only 3 o'clock! :0) don't give up hope yet.

Joyce called me today - no info on acceptance/decline, she called to respond to my messages about whether or not they had received my Fall 2007 transcripts.

I asked her if they would be calling the accepted students today, though, and she said no. They sent out the letters today, and we can call on Monday to hear the news.

Hang in there guys!

ahhh, thanks for the info. i would love to get my letter in the mail tomorrow... but I don't know if that will happen! well, at least i can stop looking at my phone/ checking sdn to see if anyone else has been called!!

:0)

rejected, sadly. kinda surprised honestly.

I'm sorry UVA, that sucks.

Well, that's another year and another rejection for me, too.

I think I'll really have to follow through with my back-up plans and get a masters degree to get in.

I feel ya Pandacinny! Do you have any more schools you're holding out for? I still have Penn... but that seems slim now. Ugh. I hate thinking I have to wait a whole more year to get started.

Sorry to hear it, UVA and Pandacinny. 🙁 My heart goes out to you.

Remember: the AVERAGE number of attempts it takes is three...so just as many people take more than that (I know I did!) as fewer. It sucks to wait another year, but make it count...I've been through it more times than I care to admit, but your time will come--I promise.

Have a beer for me!

Sorry, UVA and Pandacinny. 🙁

I got in! =) Sorry, I'm just SO HAPPY!!!😀

Congratulations, Vetmed555!

And thanks for the encouragement, alliecat44. I'm currently trying to get into a couple of masters programs. Hopefully, if I can get a masters it'll improve my academic record and make me a little more competitive.

Do you have any other tips?

Hugs and sorry to those who didn't get in - I really hope ya'all will go on to succeed in whatever you now choose do to for the time being - your dedication to the field cannot be questioned and I wish you the absolute best. I can tell how gutsy and intelligent you guys are just from talking to you on this forum, and I would be thrilled to have you as classmates. Don't for a single second think "I'm not good enough" or "I failed" - at worst, you just weren't what a school was looking for - it is not in the least a slight to your accomplisments or dedication!

Congratulations to those who got in, and if you decide to come here, I'll see you next year! 🙂 If you have any random questions, my PM box is always open.

Awww, thank you! Will try again next year if not accepted elsewhere.... I will definitely have to schedule one of the application review meetings... Does anyone know when these are done?

It's just so frustrating after looking at the successful applicants thread... I feel like I was right up there with them in my statistics. I'm sure I'm not the only one. Good luck to everyone who was accepted! :0)

Hi, Panda,

Good for you for looking to better yourself. 🙂 I think by far the best thing is to do one of those post-mortem application analysis meetings with the admissions people. They'll give you an idea of what will best improve your application next year (a Master's program, more or varied clinical experience, re-taking the GRE's, etc).

I will say that VMRCVM tends to have a more objective/numbers-based admissions policy. They rejected me twice (and I went there for undergrad). Also told my friend she would "never be a doctor" and to find an alternate career...and she graduated salutatorian from KSUCVM last year and is doing her internship at CSU this year. (one of the most competitive internships in the country). The counterpoint to THAT story is that I believe the admissions person has changed! 🙂 Hopefully they're not as closed-minded as they were back then.

Bottom line is to not get discouraged if VMRCVM is the only place you're applying. Other schools take a more holistic view towards their applicants. I had extenuating circumstances surrounding my low undergrad GPA, and Tech never granted me an interview to find out why when everything else about my application was so stellar (this was in the days before the "explanation statement" was available on VMCAS). If you can afford to consider going out of state, I'd extend your application pool and increase your chances at getting accepted.

Not meaning to bash Tech or anything, but more to give you hope! 🙂

I have a friend who graduated last year and she is AWESOME and loved her time at Tech. Low-GPA'er when she applied, but got in her third time. So who knows??

If you mean "other suggestions" such as ways to invest emotional energy/deal with the disappoint and waiting, that's something else and I can hopefully help you with that, too--let me know if I misunderstood.

Best of luck in the future regardless!!! :luck: :luck:

That is awful! 😱 Wow, seems so out of character for our school - when did that happen? I can't imagine why anyone would say that, I should hope it's changed! Dang. I think we are moving away (slowly, but surely) from being so number oriented...my GPA was average (3.49) and I had no clinical experience, which would be a death sentence at many schools, but they looked at my other qualifications. Numbers still play a big part though - I think it is influenced by the fact that VaTech itself (as an undergrad/grad school) is very number-based because of the HUGE number of applicants.

This was probably 5-6 years ago. She was a VA resident, too (same as me). I remember when I was there in undergrad (class of 2001) the admissions lady wasn't so nice--I think her last name was Bohr?--and this was the same one who said that to my friend.

The whole numbers debate...don't want to get into that. I was VP of our pre-vet club and really liked the clinicians I worked with. I had the highest grade in Dean Elmore's pharmacology class my junior year (98%). Maybe I should've asked him to write one of my recs and they would've seen past my 3.1. 🙄 Would've saved me at least $150K! I sincerely hope things are different now.

Yes, high number of applicants...just like all of these schools. Not really an excuse, IMHO, but again, that's a debate for another day (and another thread!). 🙂

No, I meant at Tech proper, not the Va-Md vet school (which is slightly affiliated but technically independent). We (vet school) probly have the same number of applicants as anyone else, you're totally right. But I think Tech tends to nose into the admission process since they are the "big guys" and technically we pay tuition to them - I'm sure new members to adcoms receive advice on 'how to evaluate', etc from them (since most members are faculty, etc it wouldn't surpise me if they have to go to seminars or something on student evaluation). And Tech which is a big school, is very, er, numerical? Not sure what a proper descriptor would be. But oh well! Thank goodness for change.

Still not justified, IMHO. And I'm now at another state school that is just as big as VT. Any CVM is somewhat loosely affiliated with its governing University.

I don't see how (or why) the overall number of undergraduate applicants to VT would affect the admissions of the CVM.

Most veterinary schools are affiliated with very large state schools.

My friend said she felt like Xeroxing her class rank and mailing it to Dean Elmore with a letter telling him about her horrible experience with the admissions counselor, but thought better of it. FWIW, she was rejected twice from VMRCVM, too.

I got the impression as well that VA-MD really places a lot in straight up numbers from attending an information there last fall. I remember Mrs. Massie saying that Cum-GPA, GRE, Science GPA and last 45 hour-GPA make up exactly %50 of the admissions score. That seems like a lot of the application to be based on four numbers alone. But if those are high for you, I guess you're set.

This might even be less weighted than several years ago--I can't remember, but I want to say that they accounted for 70% of your score when I applied (but I could be remembering very incorrectly!). Joyce Bohr (finally remembered her name) said at several admissions information sessions that they assign a numerical value to each of those numbers (different GPAs and GRE scores), rank the applicants in order, and automatically chop off anyone falling outsidethe #XXX spot for in-state and #XXX spot for out of state. The remaining people are those whose applications they proceed to actually review.

I understand this is a time-saver for many schools, but really. !!!! Aren't we paying them enough to actually read over our application??!

*sigh* Won't get into it any more--don't mean to hijack/derail the thread. 🙂

That's the same percentage that UC Davis has, 50-60% for those four things.

Hey,

I have been away from the computer and didn't get to update--I got in! It made the ski trip so much better...

And for those of you who didn't get in, this was my second year applying, I got rejected last year, so there is hope. Joyce will give very detailed feedback, I listened to mine and apparently it worked!

I love everyone this week!

YAY FARGEESE!!!!!!!!!👍

See, you DID do what others could not!
