Most programs that had vacancies are probably already filled. No doubt there will be some people who matched who at the last minute decide to not take a spot. But I don't know how you find out about this, other than calling programs.

GW just scrambled this year. Only filled 2 of 3 PGY-1 spots. There was talk of adding another PGY-1, but that may have been for a specific resident with a husband who is an attending physician at GW. You can always e-mail the PD to see if they might add another position otherwise.
Hey thanks guys. I am kind of restricted geographically to the greater DC area (DC, Baltimore and Northern VA) because of family reasons. I did email GW and someone said that they filled. Although I haven't heard back from the PD. What are the chances of someone backing out last minute?

Another thing you can do is to scramble for a spot outside of DC (apparently some programs are still looking to fill PGY-1 slots) and then, apply to transfer as a PGY-2 resident to one of the DC area programs. You should highly consider this if you are as desperate as you said you are, in need of a job, want to finish training earlier so you can finally move on with your life and start earning real money, etc. One year of being apart from family is definitely doable. In fact, a lot of people do this, specially in Path wherein fellowships are typically just one-year long.
If you decide on doing the latter then be candid about this to the program you will be applying to. Programs will not mind taking you in for one year because you will be, in any case, manpower for them. If you tell them you will seek to transfer as a second year to another program, then they will be able to plan on adding another PGY-1 slot to fill for the next match. So, it works out for the best for everybody!

Thanks for the great advise. I've been going over it a million times in my head already. How do I find out which programs are still looking? Is there a list somewhere? I would hate to go elsewhere since I already had to spend a considerable amount of time (few years) away from family because of my PhD. I'd hate to do that again. But I might have a few other options if I knew what programs were still looking.

Has anyone thought to themselves why oh why medicine has a match for graduate jobs? Can you imagine graduating from an MBA and matching? Or law school? The idea is absurd. And why does everyone start on the same date? Is it a wonderful idea to have a flood of new fresh out of school ***** running around the teaching hospitals each summer? Why not trickle them in, let people start whenever, like a normal frickn job, have normal job application processes that dont legally bind you to spending half a decade in some craphole because you made a ranking mistake. If you let the good residents leave easily, you will create a massive market pressure for programs to improve teaching as well...real lives would be saved. Oh, but we cant have that...can we.

Sometimes I almost think it would be worse if that were true. I mean, there would honestly be hundreds of people who would offer to take a lower salary so they could train at prestige U. I think the match is regrettable but it is the best option there is.
If you have a PhD, why not work as a postdoc? It'll give you something extra on your resume, and you'll have a lot more choices if you enter the match next year. NIH usually have lots of postdoc opportunities (and a nice, albeit very research oriented, residency program. Probably the best in the DC area). They're just outside DC. There's also AFIP, although they don't have many postdocs these days, and have unfortunately gone down hill fast.
I have an unexpected opening at my place, my GF just left for an extended holiday and my pace is getting real messy. The pizza boxes around my living room are stacked up so high now they are interfering with my computer gaming sessions, real annoying trust me this an emergency, pm me.

Additionally, what's your requirements for Step 1, Step 2 and Stairmaster scores? Which Letters of Recreation (LoR's) do you require? Is home cleaning and refurbishment research a requirement? And will isolation chambers and contamination containment suits be available at the facility in question?
Will lots of Grossing be involved? Or is it predominately frozens (not likely in Calif, but gotta ask).

That reminds me of that story a few years ago of a guy who died in his apartment after spending days gaming without sleep. In his place, they found a catastrophic mess including numerous empty pizza boxes and coffee cups.LADoc00 said:
