i was reading abt this in the dental forum. i was wondering in which countries would we able to practice with the dds/dmd degree, apart frm canada. is the advanced degree given equal importance as the regular dds ,and whether we would be considered us trained dentists?

Good question. All I know is other than canada no other commonwealth nation recognises the degree. But,that is because of the fact US does not or would never give reciprocity to any other degrees. It is almost same with all the degrees associated within the science of medicine.

Hey Ann 03,
DDS / DMD is accepted in the middle east for practice. in most gulf states they require indians with MDS with 3 or 4 years experience. if u have an american degree they don't ask any questions and straight away hire you.

This is a good question indeed.. Any idea about Singapore? What about China(i mean Hong Kong, to be specific)?
Also, when it comes to specialty, most programs in the US are certificate programs and donot confer a Masters degree, so after graduating from one of those programs, are we considered specialist in another country?

Well,I think you would definitely be considered a specialist. That will never be an issue as anyone aware of things knows that the programs operate ona different criteria.Even in US if ou are going into a private practise ,masters is just waste of time. But,academic jobs do pay by the degrees etc etc.I do know students come from other countries like Hong Kong,Singapore etc to do advacnced training in clinical subjects, but all over they are sponsored by their govts and have a job waiting for them. That means ,there is a validity. But,if you were to spend your own money to be in a non funded program here,it might be herculean task to recover that from another country. It might best to check with the body that governs such things in a country before venturing into such endeavours. But,whatever it is a western degree can only be a plus.

thanks for the responses.
yes definitely western degree is a plus. but i am sure thr will be licensure exams as we have here in the us. arent thr exams even for practising in the middle east? or is it only for non us degree holders? does any1 know abt new zealand?

q 1.regarding valididity for dds /dmd in middle east, is it the same for advanced programs also, or only the dds degree holds good there?

q2.. u mean to say if u manage to submit an experience certificate for 3 yrs after bds in india...u can get into practise there?(gulf)

everthings so confusing nd uncertain...hmm.
mita.

hey ann,
i have a friend in newzealand.....after practising in india for 5-6 yrs(she is BDS)....she settled there....she had to give licencure exams like in US and then i think she had to attend school for a year.....
but if a person is a dds then i dont know if he/she is allowed to practice rt away...u shud probabaly do a search on their websites to find out in detail....

Right,I think NZ does ask them to attend school if you have gone to school elsewhere except UK,USA,CANADA,AUS and a few other countries.Amerrican degree is valid in NZ.I know this for sure,as my cousin moved out to NZ after graduating from US.I think Australia doesnt ask for schooling if you are an Indian grad, but ofcourse the hurdle of exam rests on you. Also in middle east there is no licensure exam if you are a US,UK or Candian grad.I have come across a few faculty in US dental schools who have worked in middle east(ofcourse, only for the tax free money they get there). So,again the licensure requirements are waived for western degrees.Definitely a plus ,if you are one.On the flip side why even go to all these places at all after crossing the big hurdle of DDS here?America or Canada still is the best country to live and hands down the lifestyle here is way far better than any other nation.

thanks starwars and bbgun,
its nice to know tht thr r options. us and canada r great places to stay, but with all the immigration problems nowadays, i would surely like to have some options, and i love new zealand, great place too. plan to visit someday 🙂
