For the most part, is it okay getting away with an edition that is once removed from the latest? I have been thinking of using the 2nd edition BRS Pathology and 3rd edition MMRS. Should I consider getting the latest editions? They are quite a bit longer, not sure if that is a good thing or bad things.

BRS Path doesn't change much (both authors taught us path this year where I go - they're not inclined to change much). MMRS has got new charts (as opposed to the ones in font 0.0005 like the older additions). If you don't care about the charts, save the cash. You probably already know this, but the new Goljan is color with pics (worth the buy). I've also found the 1999 MCB to be an easy read (which others who have taken the test said was useful and better than the newer/longer one).

I haven't taken the test yet, but in my prep that's what i've come across.

Also, since new drugs are released and older ones phased out, get the newest Pharm resource that you can.

I used BRS path 2nd edition. There were only a couple things that seemed out of date (not necessarily wrong), and probably weren't anything testable.

What about errors between editions? Do those tend to get fixed from one edition to another. I remember hearing out First Aid has a few in each edition.

most books-->usually
first aid-->even if the errors are corrected there will be new ones

Yup--I remember going through errata for the 2007 FA for my 2006 edition, and finding that many of the 2007 errors weren't present in the older edition (although I'm sure the 2007 edition corrected some errors that were in the 2006 edition). In my experience, you can always use the second most recent edition of a book unless it is a) FA or b) the very first edition. First editions typically have more errors or omissions (RR path 1st edition did not have pictures, the 2nd edition was worth waiting for). It is a good idea to get the newest version of FA, but its not worth it to wait a significant amount of time for it or buy a new version once you've already been using the old one. Also, it is easier to find errata for FA if you use a version that has been out a little while. As for getting the most recent books for pharm, I think for the purposes of Step 1 study that isn't necessary if you are using an up-to-date FA and question bank--i.e. you can use pharm cards from a few years ago, or the millenium edition of lippincott pharm.

Does anyone know why there is almost a 100pg difference between the 3rd and 4th edition of MMRS? Unless there is a ton of new/useful information in the 4th, I am inclined to go with the 3rd for the quicker read. Or is the only difference the font size?

I do not like BRS path but i did buy it .....

did not use it but since I bought it used last month I can tell you that it was similar to the new BRS but the new BRS had two tone color charts in the physio - in path it made no difference bc the pictures are still scanty and well ...s....stinky in quality.

save your money by buying the old IMO - it is a annoying book. and best of luck.

I didn't buy the new one, but I've heard that it is only the chart font size that makes the new one different (as Jay Jay said). Also, IMO FA has pretty much all the micro you need to know its just nice to use MMRS to help learn and organize what is in FA, and the older MMRS works just fine for that.
