Hi everyone!

I just wanted to get some opinion about VCOM's USMLE and COMPLEX requirement. Do you think that the curriculum is better than most osteopathic medical schools?

Do you think that the hours spent in the classroom/lab will be longer?

Because I would think that it would be advantageous for VCOM to require both tests for the students who are thinking about allopathic residencies; meaning that this will force the students to take the USMLE as seriously as the COMLEX (not that I think DO students don't).

If anyone can give me an honest opinion, I would appreciate it very much. Thanks. 🙂

PS. How is the city like? Is it urban or rural (like PCOM's area or KCOM's area?)

I don't know if better would be the word I would use, perhaps maybe differently focused. I can only hope that they are going to integrate enough into our courses that will enable us to pass both exmas. Especially since they are both required for graduation. I am going on blind faith though, but why would they have these tests required and not give us the knowledge base we need to pass them both?

Well based on the MSIs there now, they do spend a large amount of time in anatomy lab, ex: this week they are there for 8 hours. I don't know how that compares to other schools though, perhaps someone from a different school could let us know.

There are no microscopes, everything is given to us on slides, no no micro lab persay. Now that may be good, judging by how much time people spent in my embryology class just trying to find the correct things. People would leave with headaches due to straining their eyes, so this might be ok for us. Especially since we can go through the slides at home which enables us to study in a more productive manner. At least that is how they handled microbiology this year. I don't know what they are going to do when they take Histo.

Blacksburg is a small town rural area, altough they do have lots of what you would need to feel comfortable. There is a mall, shopping target, wal-mart, k-mart, home depot, small shopping centers, lots of motels/hotels, lots of restaurants, Va Tech and all that a college town needs for its students to be happy, etc... I love the area. VCOM students will have all the benefits offered to the Va Tech students except for housing, so that is another plus.

If you have any other questions feel free to PM me, or any of those of us who have been accepted to VCOM.
