Yeah, you're right, I'm actually just trying to get people to go to evms so there'll be a spot for me at vcu too!! I've honestly not listened to a word of your alls stuff I was just trying to sort thru it. Sorry 😱 didn't mean to strike a nerve! 👍
Sarcasm is great, but harvartii appears to be .... what's the word ... serious. And I do wanna hear the knocks on both schools in addition to the good stuff so I don't care to hear bad stuff about both school. Harvarti, is there anything at all you didn't like about VCU?
No nerve struck. Good, join the VCU bandwagon. (you must hate EVMS, but not really. Just turn those away from VCU so they take us. Brilliant. :meanie: )

I saw some info on this in the VCU central thread. Wanted to get some info. I'm oos and looking to choose between the two. Here's what I've got, let's see what others think:
EVMS
-nice children's hospital
-smaller class size
-near ocean
-free parking (plenty)
-no wireless
-classes recorded as mp3
-older facilities
-clear, straightforward match list by person
-crappy library hours & few other choices for studying
VCU
-wireless
-traditional note service (not mp3 as far as i know)
-larger class size (small negative here)
-parking nightmare (as I understand it)
-unclear match list online (makes me wonder...)
-great boards prep during M2

Anyone have things to add to these to help make an informed picture of the two?

-- We've now got wireless at EVMS baby! hehe.
-- Crappy library hours?! Dude -- I have never come across a more accomodating library. And being the geek I have been, I've been to a number of libraries. 😛 When ya look at the time that is posted, it might not initially appear to be adequate. But if even a handful of students voice any issues or state that they would like the hours to be more open during these days, etc (especially during test time), the library is usually pretty obliging. People just need to voice their concerns at our monthly Dean's hour
-- The facilities are on the nicer side of the scale in my opinion. Except for the second floor of Lewis Hall, which is where the labs are. But what lab is going to be "nice". The library is very pretty and actually new. I think it was completed about a year or two before I came here (I'm currently a 4th year). As far as somewhere else to study besides the library, there's the student lounge that's a little bit more open, then there's "The Hole" which is in a back room behind the lounge. If you need absolute seclusion this is the place. Its one of those places where some people might give you a nasty look just cuz you're breathing too loudly. Speaking of breathing loudly, I hear freakiness used to happen occassionally in that back room, but that is neither here nor there. 😀
-- Ghent is a nice area. In fact, me liking Ghent was one of the reasons I liked EVMS overall. Its almost like a small town feel. It has all the coffee shops and different sorts of eateries that you may want.

Alright -- sorry if soemone else addressed these issues. I was too lazy to read each and every response.

Oh, and consequently, I chose EVMS over VCU all those aeons ago before I got all the gray hair (someone start playing those darn violins!)

better?...But unfortunately, since you're already a 4th year at EVMS, you don't qualify for jbone and cf's scholarship for choosing EVMS over VCU.

edit: Aw, jbone beat me to it.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I win.
Tacrum...you need to join the VCU bandwagon and go to school with us. You rule. That would be one sweet class of 2010. :horns: (If I'm lucky enough to be accepted that is 🙁 )

Yes. I do rule. Bow to the mighty echidna. 😛

That would also be higly dependent on myself getting an acceptance. My interview is pretty late, so you're probably in better shape than me. We'll see. 🙂

tacrum, doesn't matter WHEN your interview was. All interviewees get constantly ranked by their priority score. If you had an interview yesterday and got a score of 1.7, you have a better chance of acceptance than someone who interviews in September and got a score of 2.4.

I WANT A VCU ACCEPTANCE!! PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE...................

Hmm...well I guess that's good news for me. I wonder if they'll review my file in time for the newly announced mid-february decision date (my interview is 2/1). I'm guessing no, but I suppose it's possible.

I would like to know what my score is. I wouldn't care, except that they won't even tell you after you're accepted. The mystery intrigues me.

I hope they accept you soon Shy!

edit: Wait, don't they invite those people who get a higher pre-interview score earlier? Doesn't that carry over at all to your final score post-interview?

Uh no they won't ever tell you your score...I've tried. It's like cracking the FBI files.

And tacram, could you give a brotha some love? Shy, cf, inverted, crazy cav, and many others have been begging for VCU together for sometime now. It's a group effort. All for one...blah blah blah. 😀

I dunno, tacrum. I thought the post-interview score was the highest portion, if not all of the score.

Interesting...I wonder how they determine the score then. I mean, I've heard their interviews are pretty laid back, so if they're not grilling you, how can they score a candidate? I'm sure that most applicants that interview come across as friendly and dedicated. It just seems like ti would be difficult to come up with a score based on that type of interview. I guess that's why the admissions committee people get paid the big bucks though, right? 🙂

Well, "tacram" will certainly try. 😛 But isn't it true that once you get your top secret score, that you can't change it no matter what you do? (Well, I suppose they would frown on failing classes and/or committing a felony, but I mean short of that...).

Any suggestions on what I should do? I was thinking I could bake the Dean cookies and say they're from the SDN VCU crew. And when she says "Huh?", I'll say "You know who I mean." But then I'll get rejected for being crazy, so I'm open to suggestions for a better strategy.

I'm sorry tacrum...didn't mean to jack up your name 😉 . Yes, once you recieve your score...that is it. Final. Nothing you can do from that point on. The cookies however, do sound nice. Say they are from all of us on SDN begging for a spot. 👍

I called EVMS and didn't hear good news. I'm in the bottom 1/3 of the waitlist, being OSS and having both a slightly lower MCAT and GPA, they said its very unlikely I'd get in. I appreciate their honest opinion on the situation. It was just one of my very top choices.

I'm kinda disappointed also b/c looking at their class acceptance data (GPA/MCAT) of the past few years, I was just near the average. I figured a good interview would could get me in.

Here's to hoping my interview at VCU goes well. I don't think I'll get into VCU, being a higher ranked school that is probably more competitive to get into.

Here's to hoping for more interviews, especially from my own state.

Im sorry to hear that Nas. Forget about EVMS for now and just focus on having a great interview at VCU. Remember that numbers arent the only thing an adcom sees....if you have good ECs and Letters or Rec, these can more than make up for any other weaknesses in your application. Also from personal experience, my interview at VCU was much easier than the one I had at EVMS. It was less like being in front of a firing squad and more of a conversation. Good luck!
