whats up guys, iam new on these boards.

Got a few questions for you all,

first of all i just took EK 101 first verbal section and didnt do quite well got an 8..

First of all wanna point out i took this test at work(so i have people talking around me), i do this just so i can learn to focus my attention on my test.

I want to improve my score, as of right now i am just reading the passages and not making any marks or takin any notes on the passage itself, also i am not reading the questons first like some books recommend;

Anyway how do you all take the VR passages (notes?, circle words?, pre-read the questions?, skim first?)

Did this improve ur score??
Is the EK book harder than the MCAT passages?

thanx a lot guys

first off - an 8 is a really good score to start out with. you can improve from there. my personal strategy is to read quickly and thoroughly, circling and underlining any important words or phrases that seem to stand out (an important contrast, strong opinion, etc.) then when you read the questions, if you want to go back to a part of the passage, it's easier to find it. but that's just me. other than that, practice, practice, practice. visit the mcat forum, as well. good luck.

I got a 7 on that first EK 101 section and gradually improved to getting 10s and 11s. Don't worry too much about your first score!

thanks for the advice guys

I suggest you continue what you are doing. Right now, dont even think about doing things that rob you of time - like underlining words etc. First, try getting some experience-say 40-50% of the book (and taking a real AAMC.) By then, you will have more experience comparing time vs accuracy. Changing tactics early is likely just going to make you an inconsistent scorer. The MCAT verbal doesn't lend itself well to tactics like underlining key words anyway, so you may very well decide that this only costs you time with no increase in your score-or may actually cost you points as you fall for more traps.

101 is a great practice tool. I also found their verbal book helpful. This is quite unofficial, but most people seem to think EK1O1 is harder . Don't forget that the real AAMC verbal tests are the only ones that are really like the real thing. Good Luck
