1st year...so far almost none of our exams have had averages of less than 86. anatomy, biochem, etc etc. class averages are in the mid 80s.....so Im doing average to above average and working modestly hard...much much more than undergrad. I know that im whining, but is this normal? and does it hold true for other schools?

Why are you complaining again?

No average less than 86%? Where do you people go to school?

Our highest class average thus far has been a 79%.

He/she went to one of these schools where exams are recycled and every incoming student has a copy of. I know this as a fact of life for a well respected school in NYC!!! Dont want to name names!!:soexcited:

People, don't believe the hype if your class average is less than 86 for most of the time!!! We know, we know, we know why it happens!!!

I don't know that it's true that they have recycled exams. One anecdote does not equal widespread truth.

Most of my preclinical exams had averages in the 80s and I can assure you that no one got a copy of any exam beforehand. We weren't even allowed to see the exams again after we finished taking them.

Well, our class average fluctuates from low 80's, mid-80's to high-80's with a wide SD that varies from 5 to 10, but we are not consistent on averaging 86+ on every exams and that, my friend, is what I am suspicious of!!!

We averaged 79-85 during the first two years. The idea isn't to fail everyone in medical school, it's to get people a good base to build on and get them to third year.

Our averages are always in the high 80s to low 90s. I don't mind for the mod part because it's cool that we all do well. It was interesting though that our average dropped by ~6 pts on the one path block they used an nbme exam for, so maybe some people do have access to past exams or are just bad test takers in a computerized standardized test format.

That's very normal but to consistently have a class averaging 86+ on every exam is very, very suspicious in my book and i don't care if the class average for MCAT is 42 and uGPA is 3.9!!

I am in the exact same boat OP. Our exams are typically mid 80 avgs and I'm usally at the avg or a few points in front of it. I never studied in UG at all and all I do is study now and am making lower grades...it's a little frustrating.

These kids consistently making 95 and above are nuts. Some of them are flat out geniuses and then there's some that majored in Neuroscience, so naturally they should be doing better during the Neuro portions. I think we're just in with the best of the best, so being right in the middle is still a heck of an accomplishment. I really just want to destory step I :meanie:

Our averages are usually 78-82. Our highest avg on major exams is about an 85. The only exams where the class avg is 90+ are exams where there is just straight memorization like Histo.

I found the averages in first year were slightly higher than the averages in second year. MOST of our exams were around the 85% average range. This was for several reasons during MS1. For one thing, many of the people had variations of the courses and exposure before hand, but also, we just had far fewer classes to study for, so people tended to memorize every detail of every slide.

This year we have 6 classes at a time. The averages have gone down a little bit with the increase. We do a block exam and take them all at once. While the averages may be high, many people have huge course dependent swings of grades. It is less common to see people get all 90+% across the boards since they inevitably studied for one class harder than another.

We take our exams on computers, so no old exams floating around here.

OP- you poor tortured genius. (is that what you wanted to hear?)
