By now, i have a good deal of shadowing experience and they all have been relatively positive and productive. This past Friday, I had the opportunity to shadow two surgical procedures (a hammer toe, and a possible tumor removal), and to put it lighly, it was awesome. For those of you whom have only seen the palliative care side of podiatry, i strongly recommend sitting in on a surgery; you will find it very career affirming.

yup yup...the surgical side or podiatry is pretty sweet. I've shadowed twice so far...1st was a taylors bunion and hammer toe, 2nd was a bunion and he shortened the pinkie toe.

I was sooo pissed at myself tho because the first time I shadowed I could have came in on wednesday and/or friday...i chose friday and guess what was on wednesday... ruptured achilles tendon re attachment!!!

Good to hear that others are having similar shadowing experiences!

The problem continues to be the pay vs MDs doing the same things. Someone has got to fight for parity amongst DPM-MDs doing EXACT same procedures yet getting like 1/2 the compensation. 😕

They are working on it as we speak GymMan; they have already come a very long way, and i get the feeling they aint gonna stop.👍

I hope it's done in the next 10 years (when, if, I become a pod 👍)

I got to see some surgical procedures too. They certainly did add some more perspective. This young patient had a tumor of some kind taken off his foot. That reminds me I need to call the doctors office to find out what exactly it was.

Wait so we have another high schooler? That makes 3!

It's great to read that many of you are having great experiences while shadowing with a DPM. That's what it's all about. While not every visit will be perfect, shadowing can certainly let you know why APMA's past president told the pre-med advisors last summer that podiatric medicine is the "best kept secret in medicine." We are working to add mentors to the DPM mentor list every day, and right now there are hundreds of DPMs across the country willing to work with undergraduate students and have them shadow in their offices, surgical centers and even in the hospitals. For more information about shadowing, check out the APMA website at www.apma.org/careers. Good luck to all of you.
