Hi all,
I just want to make sure that the rankings for vet schools are listed here:
http://grad-schools.usnews.rankings...ools/top-health-schools/veterinarian-rankings

What I am trying to do is apply two top schools, two lowest ranked schools and two mid-ranked schools.. are these schools the only ones in the States? I've bought a Vet med school admission requirements booklet but the listed schools are more than the ones that are listed from the link.

p.s.
I want to focus on small animal

I would not base where you apply to on the rank. They change every year and it really doesn't mean anything. There are 28 vet schools in the states, probably you are looking at a top 10 list, so the top 10 are listed.

just changed it.

What do they base these ranks on?

-Average income of graduates?
-Average unemployment of graduates?
-Number of graduates that go on to earn higher degrees and/or specialize?
-Level of research at that school?
-Average score on exams?
-Difficulty of getting in?

-Or, is it just a popularity poll among industry insiders?

Think about that before you take it too seriously.

"All the health rankings are based solely on the results of peer assessment surveys sent to deans, other administrators, and/or faculty at accredited degree programs or schools in each discipline."
That sounds like an ideal way to determine rank...

**steps onto soap box**

Rankings are, as TT put much more eloquently, a giant ball of crap. I really believe that the students should be rated and not the schools because you're going to get from any education you receive what you're willing to take from it.

I've been working professionally in a highly specialized field of vet med going on 13 years. Some of the BEST docs I have ever worked with came out of lower ranked (or unranked) programs while I've dealt with a few duds from the so called 'best schools'. I've seen the flip as well. Thus, I never base an opinion on where the piece of paper came from. All I care about is that the individual knows how to handle the responsibility that comes along with it and uses their powers for good and not evil.

Totally. Adding onto that ... Being book smart and subsequently getting into a "top ranked" vet school in no way, shape, or form means you will be a good practitioner.

I had a roommate who majored in biology and had a 3.95 at graduation. Super smart and went onto a pHd program but seriously had no life skills! He asked me to how to address an envelope once ...

Could not stop myself from going haha, oh god... That's impressive to say the least.

I taught many a dorm-mate in college how to fold fitted sheets and write checks...and cook...and mop...and sew...

Didn't get anyone didn't know how to address an envelope, though. That is quite impressive.

When it comes to fitted sheets, I have a strict "ball it up and stuff it in the drawer" policy.

You can fold fitted sheets?

TBH, I dont fold any sheets. Use one set exclusively. Off the bed, wash and right back on, complete with wrinkles  The rest are shoved in the linen closet.

Y'all fold laundry? Mine goes from dryer to clean hamper to me to dirty hamper/floor. I actually have a separate hamper just for dirty underwear, because i will sometimes rewear clothing, but never ever underwear. Super nasty clothing that cannot be reworn goes into the underwear hamper.

Sheets go off the bed, wash, then sutured back onto the bed (apparently i kick a lot)

Man, if the ability to become a good doctor rested on laundry folding skills, I should probably drop out now.

At least you have a hamper. That means you can pass vet school. My hamper broke a few weeks ago and I havent gotten a new one, so I alternate between piles on the floor and piles in laundry baskets. And random scrubs/coveralls tossed into the garage to keep the dogs away from them. And I havent vacuumed in almost a week. I'm going to be a horrible doctor.

I'm so jealous!!

I have been using a duffel bag for tossing my dirty laundry into. Makes it really easy to carry down the stairs to do the laundry (and because I don't feel like buying a clothes hamper and carrying it back to my flat...)

And I didn't know that you could fold a fitted sheet. I have the stuff into a somewhat-folded-looking ball and toss into drawer. And sewing... I can do simple things, like fix a hole in a seam or sew a button back on, but real sewing.. forget it.

👍 ... except I put them back on the bed right after they come out of the dryer so they're not wrinkly 🙂

If I DIDN'T have a hamper ALL of my clothes would have holes. One of my dogs likes to suckle my dirty clothes while I'm gone during the day :eyebrow: ... my strategy: a hamper with 4 sections. I sort out whites, darks, lights, scrubs as I take my clothes off at the end of the day. Makes it SUPER easy come laundry day!

Eh, I don't really sort my laundry other than things like sweaters vs everything else. Once something has been washed a couple times I don't really worry about colors running.

I do not sort laundry.... there is no damn time.... it all goes in the wash together.... if it cannot be washed easily then I do not buy it or wear it  I am a lazy mofo.... plus laundry over here is ridiculous to begin with.....

and yes you can fold a fitted sheet - although it really is an art form to say the least and it is mostly semi-folded.....

If I didn't have clothes that needed to be taken care of I'm sure I wouldn't sort, do laundry and hang dry 25% of them. Sucks to have a job where business casual is necessary!! ... not for long though, I intend on fully removing myself from my first career within the next 8 months or so 😛

As for the OP,
I will avoid the whole "are top ranked schools any better" debate, but will instead point out that rankings are not correlated to which schools are necessarily going to be easiest/hardest for you to get into.

You should focus on finding which schools are the best fit for you, depending on what your strengths/weaknesses are, your qualifications, and desires and match them to a school.

If prestige matters to you for some reason, then you can factor that in.

Different schools definitely have different strengths and weaknesses, and IMO, that is what you should focus on.

👍

the only reason my laundry ever gets folded is because i fold it as it comes out of the dryer because its easier than stuffing it back in a bag (that i need for other things haha)

My mom has taught me to fold a fitted sheet about 23 times and I still can't seem to ever do it on my own. And she does it perfectly, you'd never even know it was a fitted sheet. 🙄

This is very true for residency, also. I was accepted into a top 10 school and rejected by bottom-10 schools.

And PhD programs.

My wife got into the consensus #1 program in the country, and was rejected by her 2 "safety" schools (among others) that weren't even in the top 50.

note: this post has nothing to do with veterinary programs. I just think it is a funny anecdote about the admissions process.

Further support for my "monkeys with dartboards" theory of admissions. 😉

No, no.. They tape all of the applications to a wall in a long hallway. Then, they go and get really drunk. Then they come back and chuck darts at the wall, whichever applications get hit the most are accepted, those with moderate hits are waitlisted and those with few or no hits are rejected. 😀

On a totally unrelated topic (which seems to fit the turn this thread has made):

Bbeventer- your screen name is the only reason I remember the biventer cervicis muscle. Thanks!!

 Anything I can do to help!

And here I thought they did admissions by throwing all the applications down a flight of stairs and whichever ones landed on the middle few stairs got accepted.

That is the method I use! It's a bit harder with larger sheets, but with two people it's really easy.

I'm not as neat at it as that guy though.

Most of my fitted sheets have elastic all the way around. It makes it much harder than to fold than the ones that just have it on the corners.

This can't be true (even if there is pictorial evidence of apes as bb has shown). If it were then I would have gotten in on my first try in 2003 - me and monkeys are tight. 😉

Now, for all of you challenged in fitted sheet folding, this is how I learned. Granted, I learned from the step-by-step that was printed in the magazine eons ago, but this video is much more entertaining. Complete with snide remarks and alternatives...

I noticed his sheet was either new or ironed. Good luck finding time to iron your sheets (or anything else for that matter).

So one of my vet school friends and I were shopping the other day and we spent about 10 minutes trying to figure out how to work eyeliner. We ended up not figuring it out and just left without getting it.
