Vet school social life

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Nope, no picking. We get one partner for our cadaver labs and we have to write joint reports with that person. Then when we do our live surgeries, they assign everyone in the group (primary surgeon, assistant, anesth.)

This was how our groups were for surgery class last year. Fortunately, I got a pretty good group.

I think our class as a whole tends to be pretty amicable, but I tend to just stick with the same 5-6 people so maybe I am just clueless. There are a couple of people I don't really mesh with well...but other than that I can at least work with pretty much anyone. I think clinics next year will definitely be interesting to really see how well people work together. I don't really notice drama, and our class is pretty lacking in diversity I think.

I haven't noticed any drama in our class yet. I have heard a few minor gossip type things, but nothing horrendous or outrageous. I definitely think there are some gunners in the class though, but I tend to just go about my own business. We do have a diverse class though. There are quite a few Americans, some Canadians, some from Ireland, people from all over the UK and a few people from other countries as well. It is actually quite neat, I really like the diversity. We are all fairly close in age, the youngest just turned 21 and the oldest is around 30-33, I think (?). But the age doesn't really seem to matter. I can talk to just about anyone in the class. There are definitely some people that I get along with better than others, but that is life.

Our surgery partners were assigned. There were some really funny pairings that I am so glad I'm not a part of.

We don't start surgery until next year, but we don't pick either. They're assigned by height so that everyone is working with the table at a comfortable level for them. Given that there's a 6 inch plus height difference between me and a lot of my classmates, it's probably not a bad idea (oh the joys of being short). This way, I'll probably be with that_redhead, which is pretty cool! 😀

Holy crap. That's such a good idea, I think I'm going to pass that back to our surgery profs. Thx. On surgery trips with non-adjusting tables, that's been my nemesis - I have to stand with my legs realllllllllly spread (like, stupidly so) in order to work without killing my back.

We used to pick our groups. I vaguely think I heard they were going to quit doing that, but I'm not sure. Hazy recollection.

My partner is like 6 inches taller than me. I stand on an aerobic step thing.

Crap. That scares me!

My class is pretty social, but I've not participated much. I have a group of 5 or so people I adore, about 10 I'll talk to on a regular basis, and the rest I could take or leave. I'm just over bar-hopping and the like, so most of the get togethers don't appeal to me. A lot of the people in my class came from big state schools and seem to be holding on to their undergrad mentality of party hardy and pulling all nighters.

There are plenty of opportunities to socialize and make friends if you make the effort. Everyone is fairly friendly and the gossip is minimal so far.

Holy what! That's a great idea. Definitely think it's something more schools should consider.

Well, there is a new coordinator for the surgery course now, so maybe things are different?

It's interesting how different classes at the same school differ in social stuff. There are definitely some people in our class who still party it up, but not a lot. (Except for the Halloween party and the formal the 2nd years do--those are definite party nights.) Maybe after first year you just get old and bitter from constant exams pounding you--then you prefer to just have your nightly glasses of wine at home before bed.

I have an amazing social life at vet school, I am in great demand. And I sleep with 2 females every night, sometimes 3. I do have to share with another male though.

That's right peeps😱

You too can share your life with pets at school😀.

I think I'm in a pretty good class overall. There are a few people I can't stand, but for the most part people are pretty cool. We're not a diverse group other than in age kinda (we have an older class it seems with quite a few late 20s early 30s and even 2 in their 40s). Our class is huge (164) and honestly I don't even know everyone's names, probably not even half! I haven't heard any real gossip other than the those guys are annoying because they always want to sit in the same seat and will say something if you take their seat. Plus the suck ups. No personal attacks or hookup rumors or anything like that, at least not that I've heard. Our class seems to have a surprising number of people that are already married in it.

I have 2 friends that I hang out with all the time (during school) and we have a good time, make jokes and laugh a lot. I have a different group that I study with sometimes and again we have a good time and aren't super serious. My anatomy group is AWESOME! Couldn't have picked a better group. My epi. group, not so much. So, it depends on the people and our class is so big that if you're having an issue with someone, avoidance really isn't hard, especially since our class is rebels and refuses to give in and sit in the same spot all the time. I usually do except Tuesday's, but it's nice knowing you could sit wherever and it's OK 🙂.

As far as a social life outside of school, there are groups that go out drinking every weekend and there are those that study all weekend. I happen to be a studier on the weekend. I'm not much of a partier and honestly there is so much work to be done, I don't see how people find the time to go out, but you just have to figure out what's important to you and go with it.

Having MrsSOV dress up in different costumes does not count as 2 or 3 different women. :meanie:

I love our class! 😍

There are some days when I am in no mood to handle the gunners, so I just avoid them or ingnore them. I usually don't make very many friends, but vet school has been different for me. Everyday, I am shocked with how many friends I have made.

As far as social life, I have put myself on a schedule, so to speak. I don't party every weekend, but I pick and choose. I have been looking forward to this weekend for quite some time. I have planned a dinner night with friends and alcohol on Friday after the Histo exam and Saturday I am heading to the football game and am tailgating with another group of friends. I am so excited!!!!

As far as what other people do, I don't really know. I have been invited to quite a few bar gatherings and whatnot, but had to politely decline. To each his own.

If we're going by these rules, I share my bed with FOUR MEN each night! The shame!

My school also has a super small class size of 56. I really like it, though. There are a few people I haven't gotten a chance to talk to yet, but everyone is really friendly and approachable. There are a couple of people whose personalities don't really go well with mine, and one or two gunners, but it's no biggie. I mostly hang out with maybe 10 people I've made friends with. I was also really surprised with how fast I made friends, given that I don't really consider myself an incredibly outgoing person. And I absolutely LOVE my anatomy group 😍 They are awesome and funny! Also, no drama to report yet, but we just started a little less than a month ago.

I always wanted to know if y'all who go to big football schools (i.e. Florida, Ohio State, OK State, etc.) were able to go/had time to go to football games on the weekend cuz football is kinda important to me.

We have a vet school tailgate for all the home games. There's usually quite a few people. There are some people who never go out ever and then there are people like me who go out to tailgates and bars but don't really care about the football.

Yeah, I have season tickets but I am yet to hold back my gag reflex long enough to be in a stadium surrounded by gator fans ::barf:
Like Bearby said, we have a vet school tailgate and the times I've gone, there have been at least 100 people or so. Big game this weekend, tailgating starts at 8:00 and ESPN Game Day will be here.

I love football! During first year, I had an anatomy test the Monday after a big home game. I took my flashcards and studied during timeouts, half time, etc. There is definitely time to go to the games (and you don't even have to take study materials ). I don't have season tickets this year because we are trying to save money. I still watch all the games on TV, and have been to one home game.

I definately have time for football. Our class has a vet student group, so we can sit together on game days. Two Saturdays ago was the Nebraska game (a big game for Ohio State as it was our "first real challenge") and it was alumni reunion weekend. So some of volunteered to help out with that and in the time between volunteering and the game we studied in the library!

The only thing that I don't like is the noon kickoff. It gets rough sometimes, lol.

Yeah we actually have a vet school "block" of tickets for every game so we can all sit together.

I have no idea what this "social life" thing is that you are all referring to......🙄

I have absolutely no time for that complete and utter BS..... vet school is all about studying all day, every day.... any of you who are doing any less than that are going to fail out.....

Whatever you say, Ms. Poker Lady and Whiskey Drinker... 😛

I have a dog named Nekkid Man(I'm sure that you all thought that was my real name 😉), so I sleep with a Nekkid Man every night 😀 He farts in my face while I sleep, so don't be jealous.

Isn't that the point? 😛

I read StartingoverVet's comment before I saw your post and I was like dafuq? We have a playa in the building!

startingovervet=SOV.

I don't even recognize my name anymore if you spell it out. 😀

I was confused at first. Acronym for what? Subject object verb? Facepalm. Clearly I'm up past my bedtime. Goodnight, guys.

At NCSU, students get tickets to the games for free (as long as you remember to request them on time). There are two first years in particular who went to NCSU for undergrad who throw incredible tailgates with great food and lots of beer every home game. It's been a lot of fun!

http://video.theacc.com/features/acc-road-trip/category/

Also, our tailgate is in this video (when they're playing cornhole) and if you pause at 7:58, I am in the red dress with the big red purse and boots (katie8 is in the black top with red pants). I know. I know- I'm basically famous. The video is kinda cool though they went to the first year's teaching animal unit on Friday before the game

I was at the dairy TAU in that video! I'm in the background a couple times, along with orcagirl. 😀

I'm one of the ones actually putting the rope on the cow! 🙂 It made me feel so special they got it on camera.

what do you want me to sign? I have a strict "only bathing suit areas" policy! 😀

Actual quotes from my professor yesterday:
Keep in mind this man is not funny, or cool, or young, or hip, this was all said in his very dorky, nerdy, serious voice...

"Cervical mucous is important because the vagina is a portal to the outside world. There are bacteria and viruses and God knows what else in there... you don't want a septic vagina..."

"Mammary glands are modified sweat glands. That takes the romance out of it for me."

When we all started laughing he looked at us really weird and asked what we thought was so funny. :smack:

along the same lines... our QOTD: "that mare is screamin' for semen"

and talking about stallion mating behavior- "he likes to get up near her face first and say hello. how would you like it if someone just jumped you from behind and started doing THAT without acknowledging you first?"

Haha I'm actually going to the Penn State/Ohio State game this Saturday in State College. Roar lions roar!!!!!!!

As a person with a very dry sense of humor, I can tell you that this was NOT the case lol. The man is an extremely awkward human being.

The second sentence about mammary glands was his slight attempt at humor, but the first sentence he got angry that we laughed and told us that we need to learn to keep interpersonal conversations to a minimum  🙄
