Hi, I am currently a final year vet student from south Asia. In the next 3 years, I will get a license to practice in North America (DVM) after passing a lot of difficult exams. However, I do not want to pursue vet med as it is not my passion and I studied it due to family pressure. I want to go to med school in North America. After getting my license, I will be equivalent to a DVM (Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine).
Is there any chance for me to be able to study human medicine in Canada or USA provided I have an equivalent veterinary medicine degree? Do I still have to do an undergrad course?
I know we need MCAT, volunteering, shadowing, etc., but I think I will be able to do these things if everything else is taken care of.
How much will it cost on average to study in Canada/USA?
Will I be accepted to med school this late? Am I aiming for something impossible? Honestly, at this point, I have no idea what I am going to do with my life.
I am all ears for any kind of criticism and pointers.
Thank you for your time.

Edit- Why do I want to pursue human medicine?
I absolutely love the complexity and the way they study and practice human medicine in North America. In fact, I studied some of the materials like bnb, kaplan, Amboss, Sketchy, Physeo, and Uworld for my veterinary school. And I loved every minute of reading them. Just out of curiosity, I did Amboss step 1 self- ssessment and scored 176. The way they solve clinical cases seems absolutely amazing. If it is possible, then I would leave vet medicine and pursue human medicine. The job satisfaction and pay of vet medicine is poor. I know it is almost impossible for me to study human medicine in North America, so what should I do to take my mind off these thoughts/dream and be satisfied with wherever I am? I want to move on with my life, but I guess I can not seem to. How can I train myself to do that?

Hello!

I can try to help. I am an American medical student, so I only know about US schools. I am unable to comment on what Canadian medical schools specifically allow, but I can tell you that they are even more difficult to get into than US medical schools.

Getting into US medical schools as an international student is very, very difficult unless you completed your Bachelor's degree in the US. Even then, only some medical schools allow international students at all (and of those, some only make exceptions for Canadians). Most of the medical schools that allow internationals require them to have taken a few years of undergraduate university credits in the US. Some medical schools require that you have completed an entire Bachelor's degree in the US before they will consider your application.

If you wanted to go to medical school in the US, you would need to apply to an undergraduate university, move here, and complete a lot of Bachelor's degree coursework. Obtaining both a bachelor's and medical degree in the United States could cost up to $500,000 USD in my estimation.

Most international people who want to practice medicine in the US or Canada will go to medical school in their home country and then attempt to match here for residency. That can still be a challenging pathway, but it is still much easier (and less expensive) than trying to go to US medical school if you lack a US Bachelor's degree/credits.
