How would adcoms view video game programming as an EC? I've been developing indie games (primarily in C++ or Java) for the past few years and might release one for sale sometime soon. I do have more "practical" programming experience in areas such as computational biology, database management and security, but this falls more into my research and employment work. I think putting down video game development would bring more focus to my other skills, like art/graphics and music/sound design. What do you guys think?

I think if you frame it as a programming type thing (experience with programming languages, etc) and don't make it the main focus of your EC list (giving it the same level of importance as a hobby or something), then it's probably fine and might garner some interest as a discussion point during interviews.

Perhaps if you framed the activity as "programming" or similar and then described video games as one of the programs you write, that would be fine.

If I was a medical student interviewing you, our whole conversation would be about this! This is anecdotal, but a friend's sister plays a ton of mmorpgs and jrpgs in general and it came up in every interview she had. She's an extremely strong candidate though with multiple acceptances.

I love Indie Horror games.
