Videogames on AMCAS Application/Interview Questions

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For the last year I thought you had listed it, Geekchick. I am disappointed to hear otherwise:

When I really started to enter my ECs, I was surprised to find I had more to list than I originally thought. Not the whole 15 but I found myself having to lump things together and I ultimately decided against it, since I had other leadership experience I thought was more meaningful. I did talk about it in interviews, though. And I totally rocked the laparoscopic surgery skills thing I got to try out at second look at my school. 😎

I bet the collective number of times everyone in this thread has gotten laid is astonishingly low.

(I kid, I kid!! 😀 )

I've been laid at least twice! I have the children to prove it!!! 😉

There are... sponsors for this sort of thing? 😕
Yeah, and there have been for quite a while. I actually had some interest from Voodoo back in the day (and if you recognize that name then you how long ago I'm talking here). I had too much other stuff going on in my life to pursue it at the time, but I'm just pointing this out to show that it's hardly a new phenomenon.

All that said, I still wouldn't include it in an application to a professional organization unless I had done it at a professional level. Honestly, especially today, I think it's pretty safe to say that most college students are gamers at some level, even if that's just playing Farmville. Including it on your app when you haven't done anything extraordinary with it is hardly going to stand out as something that makes you unique. At best it will get a "meh" or maybe a question in the interview (which could be addressed under the generic 'what do you do with your free time'), at worse it's going to get you the 'I now associate you with my slacker son who is 25 and won't move out of my basement'.

Gee, now I'm interested. Can I count SCII as "fast adaptation to stressful circumstances?"

Now I wish I picked up chess :/

Yes.

You always need more pylons, by the way.

Me: ..........and I also enjoy playing Call of Duty 4 Online.

Interviewer: Wow really? I play too!! How good are you at it?

Me: I'm pretty good...It's easy! All I do is sit in one spot with my machine gun with a silencer and use my grenade launcher to annoy the other team.

Interviewer: *stares* This interview is over.

In COD4 you can't put silencers on machine guns, and you cant put a grenade launcher on machine guns. Get your facts right.

LOL?

you can put silencers on SUB machine guns.
and with the overkill perk you can get a noob tube on an assault rifle

Have you ever played this game before?

You could easily make an argument that Starcraft 2 takes more skill/strategy than chess 👍

Haha a maternity test? Hopefully she would have noticed that huge lump forming around her midsection a few months in.

oh em gee

I can't believe that these people couldn't believe that they were pregnant. How can you not notice something growing inside of you?

Denial's not just a river in Egypt. I could imagine not knowing for awhile, especially in those weird cases where a woman continues to spot regularly. But truly, I could not imagine mistaking fetal movement in the third trimester for anything else (even if someone was morbidly obese with an anterior placenta I'd have a hard time buying the thought you were pregnant never crossing your mind).

Also, my avatar is the first ultrasound for my second kid. My old avatar was the anatomy U/S from my first. 😛

Anyway... video games! The trailers from E3 were awesome.

Wow this thread kinda blew up lol

No I was completely serious when I posted this. If it's something I do in my spare time, I consider it a hobby

Anyway, in order to be a camper we all know you need the following setup:

Black Ops:

Ghost Pro
Ninja Pro
Silence Famas

Modern Warfare 2:

ColdBlooded Pro
Ninja Pro
Silencer/Heartbeat Sensor

:laugh::laugh:

Sorry I couldn't resist.

:meanie:

Fixed. These were my set-ups. 😀

My grandma thought my dad was a tumor for the longest time. She was in her forties then and had given up on ever having kids, haha.

I saw this show for the first time though a few days ago. I feel like it's just a giant scare tactic to get women to buy BC and condoms at the same time, and to still be scared.

Galil + Reflex Sight + C4 + Semtex + Flash Bang + Hardline Pro + Sleight of Hand Pro + Second Chance Pro 😀

As far as including it as a hobby, I don't see why you shouldn't. Humans are entitled to leisure time, and I don't think playing video games is any more destructive or pointless than is, say, stamp-collecting.

Wait, we're talking about Jersey Shore now?

Yes, but you said machine guns; not assault rifles or sub machine guns. They are different weapons. In MW2 you can put silencers on machine guns.

To add to this, has anyone ever watched any of the korean players' videos of sc2? When I first bought the game I know I sucked and thought "hey I should watch pro videos and see how they play"

Needless to say after I watched one of them, I stopped playing. Seriously the number of actions per minute is stupidly astounding.

You're all doing it wrong.

Olympia
Dual Wield Pythons

Lightweight Pro
Steady Aim Pro
Marathon Pro

Semtex (or Tomahawk)
Concussion
Claymore

I mean, the Olympia with Steady Aim is basically a sniper rifle. People get so angry when you kill them with a shotgun from +20 feet away.

MW2
Riot shield and RPG.
Marathon Pro, Danger close pro and commando pro

Good for hardcore because of the possibility of hysterical final kill cams. It's the only reason I have that class and it is so worth it.

An interviewer asked me what my interests were outside of research/school/judo and I said "nothing really, that's my whole day right now." The real answer going through my head was - COD during the week and drinking and girlfriend on the weekends, but I didn't think he'd like those other activities as much.

i dont know if you were trying to actually include a real image, but if not, hilarious. i'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

i'm going to start typing that in chats/text/e-mails. maybe even saying it in live conversation.

necrobump for a related "questionable" hobby - homebrewing beer. Thoughts?

Might depend on the speciality, but I had it on mine and found that there was at least 1 person I interviewed with who wanted to discuss beer's I've done.

Wait, did you have it on your medical school application or your residency application?

Fail...didn't notice it was premed forum. I had it on my residency app. I only applied to 1 med school's dual admission program and was still in high school at that point so I can't comment on it from a med school app perspective.

I included it on mine and it came up (in a positive context) in almost half of my interviews.

Thanks, I guess I will include it. Also good to know there's fellow homebrewers out there! Cheers!

So I tried searching this and didn't get much lol.

Where does everyone stand on putting that you play videogames as a hobby for AMCAS/Interview Questions.

I obviously wasn't going to write an entire thing, but simply mention in the AMCAS that I play xbox (COD, etc.)

Good or no? My premed advisor seems to think that I should leave it off

But I really just love my COD

-J

I don't see why not - but I would also include hobbies that involve interacting with other people and show you have social skills (I feel like gamers get a bad rep in that respect)

Only put on AMCAS if your kdr is greater than or equal to 4 for CofD.
