Hello everyone,

I am a PGY-3 OMS resident at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, and we are working on a research project exploring:
  • OMS applicants, OMS residents and OMS graduates' preference on the 2 available residency tracks.
  • Reasons why one track might be more appealing than the other prior to matriculation.
  • Whether there are OMS residents or graduates who regret their decision and their reasons.
  • Whether there is a correlation between the track choice and career choice.
  • The demographic of each residency track among applicants, residents and graduates.
In order to do so, we have created a short online survey that ranges between 9 and 18 questions (depending on the participant's current position) and can be completed within 5 minutes.

OMS applicants (dental students/dental graduates/non-categorical interns), OMS residents and OMS graduates are all invited to participate.

The knowledge gained will provide a better understanding of the landscape of our specialty in regard to this subject. We believe this is particularly relevant in light of recent match results.

Completing the survey is voluntary and neither completing nor declining to complete the survey will affect your position as an OMS applicant, resident or graduate. This questionnaire is completely anonymous (no login required, no email tracking). Please only complete it ONCE.

4y vs 6y OMS Program Preference Survey

Feel free to share this survey with any OMS applicant, OMS resident or OMS graduate.

Thank you all very much and we look forward to your responses!

Great questions! Are you looking to have this published? If so, how are you controlling for none OMFS residents from filling out the survey? This variable will need to be controlled for…if not, it will put the validity of your study population in question.

Thank you for your comment!

We did think about it, however, to do that, we would need to track the participant's name/program to confirm they are OMS residents or graduates. Requiring personal information will significantly decrease the response rate. Furthermore, some questions people would not be comfortable answering if it is not anonymous (ie. inability to match to the preferred track, regretting getting into a particular track, debt amount, etc).

Tracking responses will be a bigger issue for OMS applicants, as they may view such information as a deterrent to their application (ie. they want 4y but still apply to 6y). If it is not anonymous, they likely will not participate.

This will be a factor we decided not to control and will indicate it as such in the manuscript.

The AAPD has a listserv of all pediatric dentistry residents that you can buy access to in order to send out surveys. They have one for practicing pediatric dentists as well. Does the AAOMS not have something similar? If so, you can distribute an anonymous survey and problems solved.

Yessir I did reach out to them and am waiting to hear back. I did find a list of all the OMS program + contact info and sent the survey to them (and have them distribute to faculty and residents). The harder part would be to reach private practice docs and dental students. I'm hoping AAOMS will be able to provide a list of email for all members. Otherwise I have been emailing all dental schools and having them distribute it to the dental students.
