Dear all,
I am a dentist from India & I have a query. I went through all the previous posts but i could not find an answer to this question and i hope someone can help me.

I live in the UK presently and my husband is moving to the states to do his Phd on a student visa. I will be moving with him on a student dependant visa (F2). Can I apply for an advanced standing programme and complete the course on my student dependant (F2) visa or do i have to apply to change my status to student visa (F1). If i have to apply for a change then what is the procedure. My student depedant visa has a validity period of 5 yrs.
I know this all sounds pretty complicated but I would really appreciate any kind of info, cos i have looked all over and can't seem to find an answer for this.
Warm Regards
😕

Hi there.....first of all, you CANNOT do an advanced standing program on any other visa other than a student visa (F1)......and now coming to getting it....see yu are pretty safe, yu 'll be entering the country through F2 visa, and once you get an admission in the school, you get a document called I20 from the school and with that you need to apply to the nearest embassy for a change in status of your visa, and generlly if all your dicumentation is correct thers no problem with this....and the F1 is then valid for 5 years from the date yu are issued it.
if you still have doubts, I would suggest you contact the INS office using the contact number from google.
Hope this helps!
K'jal.

I don't know the answer to your question. However, as you may be aware, I would think that your major concern would be financing the costs of the advanced standing program. Most of those programs are in private schools (high tutition) and no program provides financial aid unless you are a naturalized citizen or have permanent resident status. Furthermore, many if not all of the programs will require proof that you can meet the full costs of their advanced standing programs before you will be accepted.

Anatheme ,
Are planning to settle down in the US ? That should be one of the first things that you should decide before you look into anything more .

Anatheme, play on the safe side and consult an inmigration expert, preferably a lawyer.

Hi all,

Thank you very much for your replies.. I guess i am lucky that i dont have a problem with finance.. i will be able to pay for the course. Regarding settling in the US.. my husband will be in the US for the next 5 years atleast... and after that he plans to join academia.. therefore the chances that we will remain in the US are quite high.

has anyone changed their status so far? what documents are required? and how long does it take? Is it easy and straightforward? Or is there an interview?

Thanks a lot!😀
