Does it look bad to request a day to visit another program? It makes sense to do it while you are in a city, but does it show lack of interest in the clerkship, especially if you wait until late in the month to ask? I've heard to ask the residents, but what if the residents aren't sure?

I guess it depends on the program. I did that in Detroit as a student and I know that my program didn't care as I think most don't. They realize that students are operating on limited time and income and need to make the most of their trips. I would ask other students who rotated through to program and see if it has been done. If the students don't know, ask the residents. They've all been through it! I really think that most don't care.

I think it is very program dependent. One of our students who matched at a top notch program really insisted to finish the rotation that you are on and try to look really interested, especially if it's a program that you'd really like to match into.

In the end you have to look out for #1.

If the program does not want you to look at other programs, you would have to wonder what their motives are. Are they just using you as a scut?

I've posted about this before as have many others and most agree that you should be able to visit other programs.
