Hello all!!!

Just wondering if they ever asked you about how many hours you've been volunteer for hospital or dentist office ??? I'm volunteering at hospital almost a year but only once or twice a month, and haven't make it to even 100 hours yet since I have full time job and go school too so don't have time for volunteer that much... Is it a big deal about the hours or as long as you have some hours for volunteering ? I'm planning to stop volunteer for hospital this July and will start volunteer for Dentist office to get some experience ...

well, for the most part, during the interviews they ask you stuff they can't learn from your application (there's a part of the app where they ask you about all your experience). i was only asked about it once, and she asked me something like, 'what was one experience you really enjoyed while shadowing?'

They ask you on the AADSAS application, where you have volunteered, and the number of hours at that place. I was never asked how long I volunteered at a particular organization but was asked for more details such as what I did there.

Also...some schools require a minimum number of hours at a dental office. Check with their websites for more info. 🙂

thanks all for answering my question 🙂 you're very kind!!!

There's two things that you need to have:

1) volunteering in a community based capacity (helping the poor, handicaped, disadvantaged, or any other community service related work). This part is to show that you care, or at least appear that you care, about helping people and your community.

2) Shadowing/volunteering/working in a dental office capacity. This part is to make sure that dentistry is for you and you know what you are getting into.

You need both. Some schools stress one over the other or want a lot of both. Some schools don't care that much but you need a little of both. Do not have a blank spot on your application!!

Good luck

Thanks PDizzle!!! I'm thinking to stop volunteering at the hospital this July since I'll be one year volunteer at the hospital and I'll have around 100+ hours then after that I'll volunteer for some dentist office. Hopefully this will help 🙂 Because I can't volunteer at both places at the same time, that's too much of work since I have to work full time and go school ... 🙁

That's a good plan. 100+ hours in a hospital is plenty for the community part. Now get your butt into a dental office and start suck'n some spit!!!!!

sorry but totally newbie with all this community work. Can someone tell me how do you get the volunteering work at any hospital or get the community work?
thanks

Are you guys talking about dental clinics attached to hospital as one separate department or just any hospital? Here in MD, we have dental school dental clinics (where the dental students do their clinical), which is pretty big, not necessarily hospital, u know what i mean? I'm a little confused about what u guys mean by hospital. I was trying to get some hours over there, but since i have full time job, this didnt' work for me. I end up going to private practice

Volunteer at hospital is different from shadowing at Dentist office. If you want to apply to volunteer at hospital, it's very simple, some hospital they have their own "Volunteer office", go there and ask for application form, fill it out ... or go to any hospital website and look for volunteer work. You can work as much as you want, but I only work 3 hours per week or sometimes twice a month if I have to study.

They don't have dentist office at hospital 🙂 so I have to do it separate since we need to have some experience how dentists work, what they do ...etc...

...as far as hospital volunteering, do u have to ask for any certificate or simple paper as a proof? do u just ask the person in charge directly? also r u required to send it to aadsas or..?

No.. you just volunteer there and put it on your application that you did so. It's all on the honor system.

...then what if someone just put it on application without any true volunteering?
