Anyone know how to volunteer internationally without paying a ton? I could maybe afford the plane ticket to get there. It sounds like a bunch of you have experience abroad, but did you all fork over at least $1000 to do it? Suggestions?
Thanks! 🙂

peace corps has a 2 year minimum requirement i believe

i volunteered in costa rica last year and payed $1000 +
but was it worth it! definately an amazing experience..

You can go cheaper if you set it up yourself instead of going through an international volunteer organization. Find an organization that you are interested in vounteering for, contact them directly and ask them if you can work out some kind of a deal. If you are willing to pay for your own plane ticket, a lot of orgs will give you room and board in exchange for your work. It won't be the Ritz Carleton, it will probably staying with a family (a huge plus in my opinion) and they will cook for you. PM me if you have more questions...

the peace corps does have a 2 yr commitment, but they also have a policy that says you can leave at any time. (not that i'm recommending skipping out early, but i ended up doing just that - due to some family health problems.) anyway, i knew a couple people who went into the whole thing knowing that they only wanted to stay a year. and after a year they left.
