I am going to start volunteer dental assisting with an organization. I will be working with a retired dentist, I'll probably shadow and have training for about 5-10 hours before I actually start assisting. I am not sure if I should log this under shadowing or volunteer hours.

To my knowledge, dental shadowing is when you literally "shadow" a dentist and observe what he does. Volunteering would be when you actually do something like, say assist the dentist with suction. Use your own judgement would be my advice! I don't think schools will make a huge deal out of this.

I was in the same position when I applied. I just put all my assisting hours under volunteer. It worked out.
