Hi, would these experiences qualify more as volunteering or tutoring/teaching under AMCAS W/A? For context, I was interested in K-12 teaching in disadvantaged communities prior to medicine, so all my experiences early on in undergrad revolve around that mission. (In addition to these two I have Americorps service that I will definitely list as volunteering).
  • Online tutoring (through a nonprofit organization): 100 hrs
    • The organization serves specifically low-income/disadvantaged students. I volunteered for 1 hour a week and helped kids with STEM homework.
  • Online tutoring for local refugees (student org): 90 hrs
    • I tutored/mentored one student throughout 2 semesters.
Thanks!

The word "tutoring" is in your descriptions. I think you've answered your question.

Alright, thanks! I wanted to clarify since I was working with disadvantaged populations and had thought of the "tutoring/teaching" categorized by AMCAS as tutoring or being a TA to your peers.

Working with disadvantaged populations is a different consideration. Besides, many of the students you are tutoring or teaching at college may be disadvantaged themselves.

Most experiences can fit into multiple categories, so choose the one that best reflects the primary nature of your activity. Don't worry if your experience involves elements that could fit elsewhere - for example, if you tutored underserved students, readers will understand the service aspect from your description regardless of whether you categorize it under 'Teaching' or 'Community Service.' This is exactly why your written descriptions are crucial: they need to capture not only what you did, but also the impact you had on the people you served. A strong description tells the complete story that the category alone cannot convey.
