For those of you who have volunteered in the Emergency Room, what do you think students should be allowed to do? Other than observe, and change bed sheets.

I am actually starting a volunteering program where I volunteer. It's more of a indepth knowledged based program. They will hold weekly classes or every other week(not sure yet) and someone from the ED will come and speak. Give a lecture do some interaction with a dummy or a person playing the role of a trama victim. We will also show x rays how to administer tests, what drugs to prescribe, and etc. At the end of each class we will give out quizes and test knowledge. We are currently working with Columbia to make a software where volunteers can practice on the computer as a simulation during the week if they feel they need more practice.

Do you guys think anything else should be incorporated? The program is really for students who are already in a nursing, med, pa program but I'm trying to introduce it to pre- as well.

At the end of each year, were probably going to give a certification to the students and plack or something to the instructors. Each year the volunteer is there they'll slowly be able to gain access to Hippa(if this goes according to as planned) because we will have a user ID made for them and they can then check on Cardiac patients updates whether they're still receiving treatment and etc. Also of course the volunteers can use the program as a refrence.

Wow, your hospital must have quite the budget. The volunteers at the ED I work at feel lucky to get a meal voucher.

I would add splinting to the list, its a useful tool and can be easily practiced amongst the volunteers.

I guess they do, it's a teaching hospital and they have their own physician assistant program there now too. Including many residency positions and it's in the city. Whenever I'm hanging around in the ER it's always busy and the pharmacy is always busy too. Yeah I love those food vouchers but my food budget is always over 5 dollars I always end up putting money in for just the sandwich. Oh well it's better than paying the whole price.

I was planning on doing that but in a different approach. I was going to it more on a level based system from volunteers who have some knowledge prior to volunteer whether it is from school or a certification or something. More importantly I'm concentrating on how well the program goes the first time, it won't be useful if the program doesn't have a good start with dedicated volunteers.
