I understand that there is no magic formula to getting accepted, but what are some of ur number of hours for volunteering... and do schools ever have a min # of volunteer hours? I have roughly 400 hours in the ER and a bunch tutoring... i never logged the tutoring hours.

You are basically okay if you can demonstrate that you understand what doctors do. Volunteering is more about interest validation than demonstration of commitment to community service.

yea i agree... i wasnt sure if i wanted to get into medicine while i was doing engineering, but i took this premed ER class and really enjoyed it. I like working with people rather than machines.

yeah, I think your ability to talk meaningfully about your experiences and what you learned is much more important then the raw # of hours you put in. 😉

I agree with Treetrunk. Quality over quantity. You must have seen some interesting things by logging 400 hours in the ER. I would be prepared to discuss them in the interviews.

If you can shadow a physician and you know what medicine is all about, then you have done everything you need in terms of "volunteering" and shadowing. It's that simple.
