How many different areas of the hospital is best to volunteer at? I have an opportunity to volunteer at a local free clinic and was wondering should I stay at the hospital or try the clinic

depends where are you volunteering in the hospital.
i.e. If you are in the gift shop go with the clinic. if you are in the E.R. stick with the E.R or switch it up after sometime.
You want to have a experience that is enjoyable, an actual clinical experience and you can talk about at a interview.

Yup - whichever is less boring/lets you do more. Hospital volunteering can be either an enlightening, fun experience in which you get good exposure to medicine and people, or a never-ending zombie walk up and down the hallway trying to look like you are on your way somewhere important but actually you are just going to go stare at the CPR poster on the cracker cabinet again. Try to make it the former, for your own sanity.

Thank you I plan on making it meaniful I enjoy the er and was thinking other units may be good to get exposure.

I think you'll get more out of it if you stick around in one place long enough to really get to know the people working there. Only then will they want to have honest discussions with you.

Thank you I just was not sure how much experience was needed for volunteering

Be assertive and take the initiative to ask or introduce yourself to different physicians or nurses. You don't lose anything by asking them if you can shadow them in a small procedure or clinics hours... good luck👍
