Volunteering

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I dont think adcoms care too much about what type of volunteering you do, but im sure they would like some of it to be in a healthcare setting. I have done stuff through my church with Habitat For Humanity, Salvation Army, Cooperative Emergency Outreach...and now I am a Big Brother, i volunteer in a nursing home, and plan on volunteering at the local VA this summer. I have worked at a hospital for 4 years now as well. Just try some different things out: there is a lot more out there. I have some friends that volunteer with some local outdoor clubs that clean up the parks, trails, and lakes. Or some answer phones and make calls for American Heart Assn. and the American Cancer Society. Just make sure youre doing it for the right reasons...good luck!

Clinical experience is very important. Med schools want to make sure you have been around sick people and still want to be a doctor.
Here is a list where you can get great EC's
Free health clinics are great places to get volunteer time
Hospitals - ask for area where you can get direct patient contact
cancer centers
nursing homes
EMT

Hi,

Can someone tell me what types of volunteering activities are important for medical school admission?

Thanks in advance.

Talk to your prehealth advisor about what is considered "good" around your particular school.

Rescue Squad
Shadow Doctor
Volunteer at Local Hospital
Tutoring
Big brother/sister
Habitat for Humanity
Church Mission Trips to underserved areas

Are all good ideas to start with.

Best,
Coops
