At my university, we are required to take advanced electives. These electives can be any course such as art, music, psychology, etc. Since I am on the premed route, I decided to take a Biology elective. I am not doing well in the class at all and think I may not pass or get a C.

This is the first class I have ever struggled with and I am planning on dropping it in order to salvage my GPA, especially because it will also count for my sGPA. I know I would have to explain the W on my transcript.

I have seen similar posts with people explaining that they have gotten W's and retaken the course and done well in it. In my case, since this class is not a prereq or required for my degree, I plan on not taking it again.

Would the W look bad and would it also look bad if I decided to not take it again?

I'd just take the W if it's not a prereq. Best not to hurt your sGPA if you think it can't be salvaged.

There is a delusion among premeds that a W is somehow worse than an F.

One or two Ws is a nothingburger. A sea of scattered Ws in a great transcript telegraph GPA protection.

Don't lose sleep over one W, regardless of whether or not you retake the class. It won't affect your chances of getting into medical school one whit.
