Hey Everyone:

So unfortunately I had to drop General Chemistry II freshman year. I later took it that summer and got a B in it. I am alittle confused as to how to enter the W on the application. Basically on my transcript a W is supposed to have no effect on GPA but I think it is (correct me if I'm wrong) because on my transcript it still shows that it was 1 Units (4 credits).

I am entering this correctly, because when I enter in the units/credits for the course it lowers the GPA, but it was always my understanding that it shouldn't have any effect on GPA.

Any clarification to this inquiry would be highly appreciated!!

It is my understanding that entering a 'W' on your application should not have an effect on your GPA. It is supposed to be reported but it shouldn't decrease your GPA.

I would encourage you to contact the AACPM about this to get a definitive answer though.

yeah i am thinking the same thing, basically I am using a spreadsheet to calculate GPA as of right now, and I am inputting 0.0 for a GPA conversion and 4 quality points (because on my college transcript is shows that the W is 4 credits). I don't know if the same problem will arise when I actually have to fill out the application, because 4 quality points for a 0.0 significantly lowers the GPA on the spreadsheet. Idn this is so weird I don't know if I am just making an error or something. Does anyone have any insight to my dilemma?

The W doesn't equal a 0.0 on your transcript. That would be the same as failing the course. From my understanding, it does not go toward your total count of credits that is used to calculate your GPA.

On the application, it should read something like:

Course X - 4.0 credits - W - but this won't actually count towards your total GPA and the application will work this out for you.

I hope this helps and best of luck with your application. 🙂

This makes more sense to me thanks! Honestly I am only a junior and am making a spreadsheet to layout my grades and see where I fall, so I am probably not entirely creating a duplicate of how it is on the real application. Are you/have you applied and filled out the actual application? Is there like a checkbox to indicate if it is a W or something?

I'm 99% sure the application accounts for Ws correctly. It has been a number of years since I filled out the app. I'm in my third year. 😉
