Wait for transcript grades and risk submitting a later primary app

Hey guys,

I was planning on submitting my primaries on June 3rd (the earliest possible), but this would not include my grades from this semester. I have a 3.82 right now.

If all goes as planned, my grades from this semester could boost me up to 3.84, but these grades won't be updated into my transcript until later in the summer, possibly mid to late july.

In this case, would it be worth it to wait for my school to update my transcript with the higher gpa at the cost of sending in my primary applications slightly later in the application cycle (in July instead of June)?

I will be applying to some competitive schools (ex. UCSF). My mcat scores are slightly lower than mid thirties and have decent extracurriculars.

I would definitely submit June 3rd. If it was a few days difference, or if the grades significantly impacted your overall gpa, then I'd wait. But a whole month of waiting to verify just to show improvement of .02? No way. And you can just send schools updates of your grades if you really want.

When AMCAS receives your transcripts then they start verification process right?

Should I send in my transcript that does not have my most updated grades if the possible difference is about .06 ? I mean someone with a 3.5 and a 3.56 would probably get treated similarly right?

My transcripts for spring quarter grades won't be ready until 6/20 and if sending transcripts to amcas takes ~1-2 weeks then verification taking another ~2-3 weeks i'm looking at not being verified until mid to late july. That would hurt more in the application process than the possible GPA differential right?

Earlier is DEFINITELY better. What with rolling admissions and all, you want to maximize your chances. Besides, 3.82 is a really good GPA; you don't need to worry about it making a bad impression. I would only tell someone to wait for the grades if they had a 2.99 and this semester would bring them above a 3.0.

It's hard to justify delaying your application for one semester's worth of grades unless you have most recently gotten a string of less than stellar grades. As long as you have fulfilled the requirement for all basic science pre-reqs, you should definitely get your application in at the earliest time possible. I can't even tell you how many more doors you will open to yourself by simply applying early. The number of applicants is steadily rising and so are their qualifications. You will give yourself a huge advantage if you app is among the first to be reviewed.

AMCAS states that you must include on your transcripts grades from all work that's been completed to-date (see p. 21 of the instructions), so you don't really have a choice. You'll have to wait until your transcript with your grades from this semester is available.

But if you request your registrar to send in your transcript before the spring grades are out, and you list in your course work up until your spring grades wouldn't that be in compliance with your work that's been completed up to date. Since if you haven't gotten a grade for a class it's not completed?

...if you want to play that game with admissions committees, go for it. I think it's pretty clear what the expectation is.

If this is how it works, how are people in school right now supposed to be able to apply "early" in the application process? Wouldn't applying while you are in school be a disadvantage then? Because you can't apply early????

wait until you start reading the stories on here about people who didn't get their committee letters until September.... 😱

submitting in July isn't late, by anyone's definition (except on SDN). it's best to have a gameplan though, so that secondaries can be turned around within a few days of receipt.
