There's been a lot about poaching. Let me see if I've got it straight... So, generally speaking, most of what's happening right NOW, in the first round of WL movement, is poaching other programs' acceptees, and THEN, next round, it's everyone else?
 
Hi @gyngyn - thank you so much for looking into those for us. I have a bit of a different question - how representative is what you see on SDN (members posting WL acceptances) compared to what you see on your lists? I'm curious as to what your biggest and smallest movers would look like for the last few days compared to the threads. I wouldn't ask you to dig, but have you ever noticed a correlation?
 
Do you by chance know whether there are any signs of movement at Drexel @gyngyn ? Thank you so much for taking the time to do this for us.

The first round of withdrawals reduces an excess of acceptances. At some schools, the number dips below the class size and waitlist movement begins. When the most desirable waitlist candidate is holding an acceptance at a school from which they can routinely be poached, poaching will happen. The poached school then may drop to a point at which the number needed to fill is reached and they, in turn begin the process of stealing from schools that are good poaching grounds for them.

The correlation is quite close.

I also appreciate you taking the time to look up this information for everyone.

I was just curious if you could estimate what percentage of each class are made up of "poached" candidates. Is it a significant proportion (50%+) or generally very few (<5%) or somewhere in between? I imagine it varies widely from year to year and school to school but was just wondering what this number could be. Thanks!
 
Is a school less likely to accept a WL candidate who has zero acceptances elsewhere? My other acceptances are at DO schools, so my MD waitlisted school won't see that.

There were were several withdrawals from Pit but about as many stayed (of the ones I could see).
 
@gyngyn Thanks for doing this!

Just to clarify, when you see WL movement on a particular day, does it mean the people you saw were taken off the waitlist the day before you saw it?

We can see when AMCAS indicates that an acceptance has been offered. At this point in the cycle that is very likely to be a waitlist offer.

Quite a few withdrawals, but without knowing how many over acceptances they have, we just have to wait until we see waitlist movement to know that they were depleted.

Seems a bit faster to me. That would be normal, though. The recent memory of a near-miss (over-acceptance) makes schools more cautious in a subsequent year.
 
@gyngyn do you know anything about the FL schools WL movement? Or is there no significant overlap with your school? Trying to figure out USF Morsani movement specifically.

Out of curiosity, does the AMCAS report update daily or throughout the day?

?????? Berkeley doesn't have a medical school
