Waiting For My Mailman

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
wow this is going to be a long wait... i can't wait much longer its affecting me studies. So when is this mail man going to show up, he will be treated with some milk and cookies if he is carrying my letter.

UCD - Can you hurry up please?
RCSI - I know that your next interviews aren't till may/june but still send us a letter for now!!!

Thanks......

Hey guys,
It's my second time applying to the ABP schools and i just wanted to let you know that the wait sometimes lasts much longer than is tolerable... i did not hear from UCD until after classes started in September last year. It's going to ruin your year if you stress about the wait, so i would suggest trying really hard to relax and let things happen when they happen. It will make your life a lot easier in the meantime. 🙂
Cheers,
C.

wow september... did u apply before actual deadline? or by late deadline? when they send rejection lettters....does that say why u got rejected? i hope u dont have to wait till that long this time!!

I did apply by the late deadline, so i think that is part of the reason for the length of the wait. The rejection letters simply say that they did not have space for you or that your application was denied. They don't give any reasons at all. I also hope we don't have to wait this long this time!! Good luck!!

First of all, thanks for starting this thread torontonerd, great idea!!

Also, I've got a dumb question: when was the late deadline? I thought that the Nov. deadline was the only one.

Okay, gotta go downstairs and check my mailbox...yup, nothing.

The late deadline was either February 1st or 15th, i'm not sure exactly which.

okay i know no news is better than bad news...
but at this point i think i'd rather get a rejection than be subject to this torture..
at least i'd know to make definite plans for the summer..
*sigh*

when i first applied in nov. i was pretty confident about my chances..
but it's going waaay waaay down with every passing day. hah!

what's everyone doing for loans?
if i DO get accepted, i don't have the $5000 CAD or whatever for the deposit.. is it possible to get the loan within 2 weeks or whenever we need to send it in by?
cause we only get the loan once we have the acceptance letter, right?

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. Where do people usually go to ask for the 60 grand/year that it looks like we will need? For all us Ontarians, I don't know if OSAP will handle a request that big.

RBC gives you a $150,000 line of credit and OSAP gives a little bit too. They have more info on the ABP website.

hey guys i had the same question and for the last few days ive been searching the OSAP website for more info and "yes" they do give loans from the federal government to students who are canadian citizens im not sure about permanent residents...however im not sure how much they can give...

yep ur right...not only RBC...but also BMO, scotia and TD give lines of credit....additionally...obviously 150K is not enuff for ireland. so u may either get 2 lines of credit( i dunno how to do that though)... or get a student loan in addition to a line of credit.the crappy side to a student loan is...that unlike line of credit, u have to pay interest(@ prime rate) as u study...which comes out to be about appx 6.7% of ur principal. quite a lot of money but do-able
but anyway...try not to worry abt the loans to pay ur fees and expenses cuz banks are VERY lenient in loaning money to low risk careers like medicine

the deposit is another story bcz i dont know if banks are gonna run thru all ur papers and finalise the amount in two weeks.
so what i wud recommend is..maybe look into getting a personal loan? OR use credit cards to pay ur deposit...and apply for line of credit ASAP...and pay off ur credit cards when ur loan comes in.
im relying on my parents for the deposit..and i will pay em back with my line of credit money

I have a funny feeling that the last week of March will be the week we are waiting for... Just a gut feeling... For my own sake the stress for my last Canadian interview will be so much lower if I know I am already in some place.... But then again there is that $6000 deposit... Ah, the joys of being a neurotic premed. 🙄

If there are any Canadian OMSAS interview ppl out there what would you do if youy get an Irish acceptance before May 15??? Would you risk the $6000 even though there is an approx. 50% chance of not actually going to Ireland due to the alternative acceptance?

PS: May 15 is the super magical day all Ontario schools email those that interviewed and tell you if you are in/waitlisted/rejected.

Honestly, if i was so lucky as to get an interview from an OMSAS school, i would just risk it and not pay the deposit... waiting another year, but knowing that you have a chance in an Ontario school is worth it in my eyes. A friend of mine was waitlisted one year at an Ontario school and then rejected in August. While it was devastating at the time, he really appreciates the time he has had since then to mature and grow, so when he got in this year he was in a better position than many of his classmates and definitely in a much better financial situation than those who paid the thousands of Euros to go Ireland.

I've also heard that if you have a good relationship with your bank, when you use up your 150,000 you can ask for more money and they usually give it to you.. i'm not sure how much more though

and ppl usually use OSAP to pay off the fees from the line of credit?
i'm not entirely sure about the whole money crap
i'm so financially-challenged it's not even funny

anyone have any clue about co-signers? i heard that it's pretty standard to require one.
I emailed someone from RBC and they said that if you're leaving the country they usually want you to have a cosigner, but I really don't want to ask my parents to do that for me..

i've read around the forum that different branches tell you different things..
anyone know any nice RBC branches around toronto?

I'm getting kind of nervous about the money. Honestly, are any of you guys financially set or are you like me and are scrambling to buy that last textbook this year?

Whenever I think about how much money I'm gonna borrow (if I get in ofcourse, which is a big IF), I start to wonder if I'm not out of my fiscal league.

Anyone else feel the same way?

How long does it usually take to pay these fees back?

Hey, I'm in the same boat as you and in my opinion I would pay. I got waitlisted at Western last year and I'm not up for wasting another year so i think the $6000 is worth it for me. Just to have the piece of mind of having a place locked up, in case nothing works out in Canada.

is anyone going on vacation this summr...cuz i am and if interviews r in may/june its going to be a lil difficult b/c of exams and i dunno wen the interview is but if its late june like the 26 or 28th then i may not be in toronto for the interview....i hope we get sum news soon😕

Hey,
So basically if you haven't recieved a rejection letter from RCSI then your considered for the second round. Thats a good sign right??

Well I guess when peoples deposit date is gone by then they would start sending us more information. When will UCD start?? This is taking way too long anyone email ABP??

Thanks!👍

i wish i cud go on vacations🙁have too many things to do lol
i dunno if anyone knows abt this..but here goes..
ok so i graduate with a BSc this april. with gpa slightly below my expectations. if i take courses this summer, after my undergrad degree is obtained, do the med schools look at those marks and factor them in my gpa?

It might work for Ireland.

I know most Ontario schools, Toronto, Western, Queens, won't use summer grades but will count the credits for prereqs.

I took orgo in the summer after first year for it wouldn't ding my GPA at most Ontario schools. This is a very common GPA loop hole utilized by predmeds at the Ontario university I attend.

Gah! So I get an urgent e-mail from Mr. Keenan saying that he has a FedEx package for me but that my credit card did not go through (he wants a new valid number), and that he'll send it to me as soon as possible once he gets the new number.

So I'm thinking this is an acceptance(?) but I won't know for sure or from where until next week! *is all jittery*

Blizzardcake,
The same exact thing happened to me today too. I gave them the new number and Mr. Keenan said the package will go out this afternoon. This will definitely be an acceptance package. Rejection letters are never urgent from the school's point of view.

congrats guys on ur acceptances!! when did u apply...i was wondering if there is some relationship between date of application and acceptance/rejections
so if i take courses in summer..ireland will consider them in my gpa=D?even if they are AFTER my undergrad ceremony? besidesss canadian med schools aren't my cup of tea...my one and only 4.0 semester was in summer lol

torontonerd,
My application was complete two days before the November deadline. And I am not sure about summer courses factoring into your gpa.

Hehe, thanks for the congrats!

My application was fully complete one day before the November 15 deadline. I've never taken summer courses, so I can't say anything about that either 🙂

Hey!
Congrats you guys!!!! I have check my visa but nothing yet😡 Are you guys 6 year applicants or 4 year applicants?? Did you apply to UCD??

Reply back,
Thanks!

Hey guys, congrats!!! I was just wondering when was the last time you contacted Mr.Keenan If it was recent and he had previously told you that there were no acceptances this round, then it may mean that the next round of offers may have started. (notice how I'm willing to grab onto even the faintest hope?).

Well I'm glad I didn't have to ask this again!!! Hey that is awesome guys! I guess I have my answer now... I don't need to think about this for some time. I didn't apply until Jan! So I think I will be taking a vaca from this forum.... it's all driving me too crazy! Again congrats!👍

ahh well...alleast the wait was worth it in the end! i am kikkin myself for not applying earlier. i had no reason not to apply in november..except for the fact that i was so involved in watching HOUSE MD (and dreaming) that i never bothered to research med schools in ireland!!!!
tell ya guy what :idea::idea: if i get into a school...God be my witness ..i will send a keg of beer to the dean lol (to any dean reading this, please dont reject me!🙄🙄)

Hi Guys ... I was noticing the topic of taking care of the financial situation. I have been out of school for a year now - and I definitely recommend anyone here that is worried about money to take a year off and make some. With a science undergraduate degree, you can make pretty good money (about $40G and up). I saved about .. hmm 20G while working this year, and the bank actually OFFERED me .. a 15,000 line of credit.

So now, on top of any professional line of credit (the 150G one) ... I have an extra 35G as a safeguard. I also recommend any of you who have european backgrounds to actually get your Euro passport. You can then work in Ireland during your 4 months off. That will also aid in paying off tuition.

I hope that helps. Don't think taking a year off is a waste, having job experience is always important.

Best of luck to you all.

Hey guys!
I emailed APB today and they said UCD finally started to give out admissions. So basically the packages people got today where probably from UCD. Unluckily I wasn't in the first round...haha np! I'll wait like I have been🙂 hopefully something soon!

Hi Everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has heard about Trinity sending out acceptances yet? I know that some people have recieved rejections from them.

oh gosh
they started giving out UCD admissions???
......now i'm really scared.......

I think I read a while back on one of the pre-allo threads that the ratio of SDNers:NonSDNers is something like 1:5.

Ditto what Torontonerd said: please post you guys, we neurotic premeds have to stick together. 🙂

Hi Everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has heard about Trinity sending out acceptances yet? I know that some people have recieved rejections from them.

I remember emailing ABP and Mr.Keenan told me that neither Trinity nor UCG have sent out any acceptances. Welcome to the thread by the way EDZO, the more the merrier!

where are all of you heading do you think?
i'm UCD or nothing.. i was going to apply to TCD, but i heard you have to have an undergrad degree..
if i don't get in.. i guess i'll just stick it out here for another year and try some US schools..
as much as I love Canada.. I want to LEAVE.. if only for a few years..

If I don't get into U of Manitoba then I will go to any of the Irish schools, I applied to all but NUIG (I think that's what it's called).

Well I am really gunning for Toronto right now. Ottawa followed by Mac are close seconds. For Ireland I would have to say UCD or TCD are ranked equally, then NUIG or RCSI. UCC is my last choice school in Ireland.

I think Ireland would be a great experience. If the match wasn't an issue I would rank places like UCD or TCD on par with some Canadian schools in my own personal ranking scheme. I have friends who are taking vet med at UCD so being in Dublin wouldn't require me to leave all those I know from Canada behind, which would be cool. Either way, it is the roll of the dice which will determine where I end up. 😉 At this point Canada, Ireland or Australia are all equally likely in my opinion.

I applied to a few schools in the states, but it looks like that's probably not going to happen. Even if I were to get in to the States, I am sooo excited about going to UCD (if they'll have me ofcourse) and living in Ireland. I would place RCSI Bahrain in second just because of its tuition price.

I am completing my B. Sc. at McGill. I applied to Trinity, UCD, RCSI and UCC. I interviewed for RCSI's 4yr GEP in Toronto on March 3rd and received my acceptance package in the mail yesterday. I received a rejection letter from Trinity the week before my RCSI interview and I haven't yet heard from UCD or UCC.

Welcome Ihendr4, and congrats on the RCSI package! How much is the RCSI deposit, and how long do they give you to accept? Were there a lot of people at your interview? What were your stats like? Are you going to accept?

(Sorry to hit you with so many questions right off the bat, but to keep from going completely nuts, its either that or take my bed and park it right beside the mailbox so that I'll know immediately if something finally comes) 😀

The deposit is something like 6000 euros, around 10 000 canadian I think. I don't actually know because I haven't actually seen the package since it was sent to my parents house in Toronto. You have until April 1st to send them the forms and the deposit. At my interview (I went at 9am) I only saw 3 other people, 1 person for the 4yr and 2 for the 6yr program. I will probably accept the offer since RCSI was my first choice ( I really like the idea of Dublin and a 4yr program, plus I intend to return to N. America afterward and from what I understand they're the most accommodating). My GPA is a 3.3 and my MCAT was a 31Q. Hope that's helpful.

heyy lhendr4! congratulations!u will have THE most relaxing summer ever(filled with :hardy: and 😴 and damn they dont have an icon for a beer bottle), now that u know ur going! my scores and gpa are very similar to urs....3.28 and 30 R...im glad that i see i might have a standing chance. btw what happened during the interview....pls tell us abt it!
did they talk a lot abt ur extracurrics???

During my interview there were 3 interviewers a Prof, an alumnus and someone from administration. They took turns questioning me and it seemed that some of the questions were kind of repetitive. They asked me a lot about why Ireland, how i found out about it? why their school? where else I had applied? what I would do if I got in to multiple Irish schools/Canadian schools? what I could contribute to the class/school? why medicine? what i did for fun/to relax? they asked me which aspect of my resume i was most proud of and commented and asked questions about some other aspects of it. they asked me about my major, why I chose it, would I choose it again if i could go back? i had a few questions about specific courses i took, which were most challenging, etc. The Prof who was head of the GEP asked me about my Genetics course and then asked me to name the most common genetic diseases in Canada. I totally flaked and said I didn't know, at the time I couldn't name a single one, ugh, but I guess it didn't matter too much. i also was asked about how i handle stress, how important is it for doctor's to be well-rounded and then they gave me the opportunity to ask them some questions. They didn't ask me any questions on finances which was a surprise since I read that it is usually a focus. Hope that was helpful.

Hi guys,
Just wanted to wish everyone a Happy St. Patty's and good luck to all of us who are still waiting on the Irish schools! :luck::luck::luck:
