Waiting For My Mailman

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Haha I have an idea, considering TCD hasn't rejected us how about they show us some love with an acceptance. 😉

TCD and UCD are my fav. Irish schools, I would be happy to reciprocate the love. 😛

It means that we have passed the first round of elimination.

For UCD, we can be offered or declined admissions based on how many students, who have received 1st round offers, accept them.

For TCD, we could be in the first round, who knows ... I just updated my profile with ABP to have any successful applications be sent by FedEx. I am guessing that because we haven't been rejected yet, that means we're definitely in the "to-be-offered" list, but again, depending on where we are on list.

nahh i doubt they are done rejecting...4 instance i havnt heard of anyone who applied late get in..premed 101 or sdn. maybe they just havent gotten around to looking at all the apps yet? i really wish what u are saying is true but i seriously doubt that we are all on "to be offered" list.

That is true, I forgot to consider those who applied late.

However, I think my assumption could still apply to those who did apply on time way back in Nov and already have their applications reviewed, especially for TCD. The ABP office told me that "hundreds" have already been rejected.

As for UCD, who has already sent out their first round of offers, seeing that we ( those who sent in applications in Nov ) haven't been rejected up 'til now, it must mean that we have also passed the first round elimination, but just not good enough for first round offers ... therefore => to be offered, based on how many acceptances are confirmed/declined.

bah, just speculations ... speculations ...

Good luck to all!
Hang in there and eat a tub of icecream to relax.

just read me email...got rejected from galway (first round?)...well alleast we kno they started to look at the very late applications for SURE.

i got rejected by galway, called them directly.

Maybe, but their good speculations.

:corny:

Somewhere out there, Ireland admission officers are going "Darn, they figured us out!"

I'm in the same boat as you, but hang in there... once the rejections start coming in you start to miss the torture of just waiting. I do hope that it's not rejections that you receive though! 🙂

I'm in the same crappy boat Giantaxon....not a word from any of the schools...🙁 But hey guys maybe all the schools are fighting over our applications right now. I'd like to think they're fighting over us😀 Ya right EH?

Good luck to all. I can't handle this premed bull**** stress.

apparently they have a whole stash of applications they have yet to mail out for rejections. that's what i found out from calling them schools directly.

I think I liked RugbyMD's idea better. I think that's what I'll visualize from now on when the mailbox is still empty.

Can somone explain to me the phenomenon of "Rolling Admissions".

I applied the very first day the application started. I had everything submitted within 1 week of filing my application. But to this day, I haven't heard anything from any of the schools.

No rejections, but no acceptances either. Anyone else in my boat as well?😡😡😡

Sorry, i don't quite understand rolling admissions either, but i can tell you that i applied way before the November deadline and still haven't heard anything from any of the schools. I think this is an exercise in patience for all of us. :luck:

I remember asking this question in August. The person at the Cali ABP office said that no, none of the schools in Ireland use rolling admissions.

In the states, rolling admissions means that they start accepting/rejecting in september and will keep doing so as applications keep coming in until june/july (notice that most final deadlines are usually in Feb). Therefore, if you apply in August, then you will only be competing with those other few who applied in August. If you wait until Feb. then you will be competing with everyone who applied Aug-Feb. Therefore, in the States, the earlier you apply, the better.

I believe I read on one of Irish schools websites that admission is on "first come first serve basis"...........is that rolling admissions?

What are your thoughts on Caribbean med schools?

Open discussion.

I think SOME of the Carribean schools do a great job in getting you an MD degree, and preparing you for USMLE. As a matter of fact, the reason Carribean schools are so successful today is because they focus on preparing you for USMLE and getting you into a residency program (whether a good or bad program, I dont know).

However, for me studying medicine is not only about doing well on USMLE, or getting into a residency program, or even practicing medicine.
Dont get me wrong. It is my dream to become a physician, and I can't think of any other way to make a living, live a fullfilling life, and contribute to society.

I believe that learning medicine has to do with tradition. An institution dedicated to teaching medicine should focus on supplying physicians to the Global market, and not only to needs of a certain country. Whats different about medical schools in Carribean is just that essentially they are factories for producing physicians that will work mainly in the USA (nothing wrong with that). But, where is the tradition? Where is the experience of seeing the world from a different eye?

European schools on the other hand, have taught medicine for centuries. They may not care if you do well on USMLE, they may not even give you time to study on your own for USMLE (something said by other folks on SDN); but what you will get in Europe is experience of a lifetime both in and out of medical school. I have worked with clinicians trained in USA and Western Europe (namely Germany, Ireland, and UK). And it is my observation that the bedside manners of European clinicians are by far better than USA clinicians (again I am not implying that USA clinicians are not good, just different way of practicing medicine).
In USA medicine is taught based on facts. If one can memorise a textbook of medicine, and learn how to order a million dollar workup for "fever of unknown origin", one will pretty much do well in USMLE.
But if one want to learn the art of medicine, feeling the pulse of a patient's illness, appreciating the depth of a murmur, observing the distribution of the systemic illness, and establishing a diagnosis with use of little radiographic resources, one simply has to learn medicine for a reputable institution in Europe. Not many schools in USA teach medicine that way. And the schools that do, are merely not enough to accept the massive number of medical school applicant.

There are many folks on SDN who have had very bad experiences in Ireland. I am not in any way suggesting anything otherwise, all I am saying is that Europe has a tradition of medicine, which the Carribean schools do not.

Regarding clinical training.....believe me....I work for one of the best institutions in the world, which is affiliated with one of the best medical schools in the world. It is my assesment that the amount of medicine you will learn is mostly based on your individual effort. I round with med students who put a ton of effort in learning medical theory, show up for morning rounds early, and jump into any clinical problem at hand. In the end, they take away top class medical experience with them. On other occasions, I get students who show up for morning rounds and are never seen again. These very students leave medical school unsatisfied and lack the knowledge needed to thrive in post-graduate residency.

So what's my point? Ireland, Carribean, China, India, or USA......if you want to learn medicine, you will learn medicine. The question is: What type of experiences do you want to have along your journey to becoming a physician.

Sorry for the long post.🙂

Speaking of transcripts when I apply next year I will have a few P's (pass) on the transcript from my clinical placements for my nursing degree, and from my previous year at another school because i got some credits transferred over. Do i just send them my one year transcript from the university of ottawa and my current school? or will they even care about the P's and not want an explanation...sorry for being offtopic ahah but you guys are in the admission process so i thought it would be best to ask you guys 🙂
Thanks

you can PM me to not clutter this topic if you wish!

Giantaxon, did they say why they wanted an updated transcript? Is it because you're still taking classes so they don't have your results from 1st term?
Anyone else losing sleep, hair and getting ulcers?

Hey,
I know what your feeling!! Its taking so long!!
I got an interview with RCSI at the end of the month. Hopefully I get accepted!!!!

Also i'm still waiting for UCD. Do you know when second set of offers are set out? How do we know if we have been wait listed? UCD was my first choice, and RCSI my second.... but I will be happy if RCSI accepts me!!!

UCD anything please!!!

Thanks!

I'm going to be bald, fingernail-less, and have incredibly long bags under my eyes by the time they accept me.

Come on UCD!!! I would be perfectly content if they even sent me a brochure at this point because then I would be secure in the fact that they know I exist.

Just got my rejection from TCD.............aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

sorry to hear about the rejection gmacpac

how were u notified of the decison? email or regular mail?

Trinity is a no for me as well 🙁
waiting now for UCD

Just got the rejection letter from Trinity as well....:'( Just seeing the snail mail sitting there I knew what it was. Lets keep our fingers crossed for our other options.

Sorry to hear that guys. I didn't know they sent us rejections by snail mail now. Hopefully next one we see is an acceptance.

Everyone send out good thoughts and prayers! 👍

Just got the word from Trinity: rejection.

And then there were four...

i'm sure you guys have read the "UCD" thread on how they only take approximately 20 north americans ( ~ 15 Can / ~ 5 US ).

I assume that it's the same # for other Irish med schools.

That's tougher than trying to get into our own med schools!
Don't feel bad. The odds are basically zero.

Wow. Today can't get much crappier. Looks like I'm going to have to apply for that Masters this year.

Why don't you guys look at Caribbean schools?
There are 4 of them that are recognized in the US and
many of my friends are currently there or have graduated
from there. They love it.

That's my plan B

Just wondering if the Trinity rejections are coming by snail mail or email?

Just wondering, did anyone that applied to ABP for the Feb. 15 deadline, get back any rejections or acceptances yet? I sent in all my stuff a couple of days before the 15th and I still didn't hear back from any Irish schools.

Snail mail. Mine was issued on Friday, and Mr.Keenan told me its on the way.

Did you have to email him to ask or he notified you without you inquiring?

I had emailed Mr.Keenan the day before, and he emailed me back to let me know that he had just been informed about my rejection. So...a little bit of both.

hey i applied around the feb 15th deadline also...and i know that RCSI interviews r being held in toronto on the 26 and 27th but i haven't been notified for an interview yet..just last week i sent an email to ABP about the status of my application and they said im still in the running...but im expecting the third round of interviews to be in june/july/august...cuz ppl who applied in nov got their interview in march/april so...if we applied in feb...r interviews wud probably take longer. Hopefulli im not on vacation wen they call me for my inteview 😉...just be patient...ABP told me to look at #6 on the FAQ which they had attached in the application...so im just going to do that..and leave the rest to god:luck:

hey sportygirl...im not completely sure if they categorize interviews just as per the country ur in, but i think its more inclined to when u applied for those schools. I've heard that RCSI usually has 2-3 interview batches in Toronto; the first one has already passed on March 4th i think and the second one is coming up on April 26/ 27th and then im assuming they will probably have another interview batch during june/july ...so yea..i realli want to get it over with also...o well i guess v'll just hav to keep waiting...where r u from nd did u apply for the 6yr program?

just got my rejection letter by snail mail from Trinity...ucd ucc rcsi ie/bah left :luck:. oh well, cant be too sad, i have 4 left still lol

Has anyone been accepted to UCC this week?? ABP called me today and said they have an acceptance package on the way (they have my addresses all mixed up, long story). I am so anxious to know what school it is, i want UCC so bad I can taste it. Its too bad they won't let us trade offers amongst ourselves🙄

I got my UCD acceptance last Tuesday. I was away from home, my mom received the package, she didn't know what it is so she left it there for a week. Until today, I came home and opened the package. $4000 deposit due April 30th, gee, that's a lot of money!!!

Congrats deutsche106!
Does anyone know if the deposit cost the same for all schools?

All the NUI schools + Trinity charge the same fees and deposits for their courses. RCSI is different. Good luck,
