This past cycle, I was waitlisted to one of my state schools, and unfortunately had no other acceptances. It looks like waitlist activity has significantly died down for this school, so I've been working on my re-application. It's improved from last time. I was just about to submit my AMCAS, but then I was reminded that early decision exists. This school in particular does offer that option, and their website says they accept a few people every year from it.

I loved this school during the interview, and I was fairly competitive for it. (3.6/512 + Good ECs)
I could re-apply normally to the ~20 schools on my list, but I'd much rather go to this school than the others...

That being said, is this feasible? I searched around, but it looks like no one's asked this kind of thing before. I will call the school about this, but first I want some anonymous advice to make sure this isn't a complete pipe dream.

1) EDP is usually for outstanding students who fit the school well. You didnt make it off the WL for the school which indicates that they dont considered you outstanding
2) You cannot apply to any other school while waiting for EDP decision, which may not be until September. If dont get accepted EDP, as most do not, you will then be badly behind the curve applying to all the other schools, many of which have seen you and rejected you from the previous cycle
3) Your are a reapplicant and generally have worst acceptance rates, Therefore you need to apply to a wide array of schools early. EDP is directly opposite that

Applying EDP is a bad idea

That makes sense. It really is a big risk.

Under normal circumstances I would agree with @gonnif without a second thought. However, given that schools will no longer receive multiple acceptance data from the AAMC, I suspect there will be a much larger push in the near future to offer acceptances through EDPs.

If I were you I would straight up contact the dean of admissions (or appropriate underling) and pose this same question. If you receive anything less than a highly enthusiastic recommendation to enter the EDP then head straight to the general pool.

What does this mean? I'm confused how it would help the OP's case

We aren’t going to have any information on who has multiple acceptances, and therefore no way to enforce the traffic rules short of developing legally binding contracts with applicants, and/or requiring large deposits (similar to DO schools).

In order to offset the mess this may create next spring, I foresee more and more schools “locking in” larger and larger numbers of their seats through EDPs. A bird in the hand, as they say.

Thanks for your response and your time on this site! Do you really think AdComs are going to take this into account for this cycle? I have applied early decision to one of my state schools as my partner of many years is an M2 there. My MCAT is competitive for the school (516, their average is a 512) and the dean of admissions encouraged me to apply EDP when I spoke with her this winter (before I even had my MCAT under my belt!), but I would feel better knowing ED applicants have an edge this cycle!

This cycle, no, given they already know who goes where, and they have all have large wait lists.

The vibe at the last student affairs meeting (in Orlando) was that a lot of schools were considering expanding their EDPs. The next general AAMC meeting in in November it should be possible to gauge how many have followed through, and to what extent.

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply, and your expert insight!
