Waitlist watch: Who has released a seat at a school?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm on the waitlist for MSU-COM and they still need to have 10 seats withdrawn before they start pulling from the waitlist. 🙁

I've been on the waitlist for ~5 months also, so I know what everyone is saying. I've even started to study for the august MCAT incase I dont get accepted anywhere.
9,9,7, with the 7 in verbal. 😡

MSU told me that some schools were interviewing late because of the problems aacomas had with the application service and that the waitlist may not move until the mid-late july. that would be HORRIBLE!!!!!! 😕

I only applied to two schools because of my MCAT scores and got waitlisted at both. Hopefully something will work out, but if it doesn't, I will have to prepare for the august MCAT. ouch.... 🙁 🙁 🙁

I really am bored and all I think about is when LECOM is going to get moving. I think I would rather get hit with a lead pipe than deal with this torture. Im really serious about that!

PCOM stopped interviewing in March, so that is not the problem with their movement. Why would an AACOMAS delay from well over half a year ago make a difference?

I appreciate the above comments... and like I said I have a lot of decisions to make. Going to LECOM is certainly not the end of the world for me. It is just difficult for me to accept not being in philly, if that is the way it is going to be. You see if I make plans for LECOM and then all of a sudden PCOM calls, then I'm stuck in a rut. You have my word that if I hear from PCOM.. I will immediately withdraw from LECOM. I am sorry to be holding on to LECOM hopefuls golden ticket... it is somewhat ironic that what I desire from others at another school (withdrawing acceptances), I am doing the complete opposite of. But you must understand my circumstances at the present time. I've gotten into a school, but I still have a shot at my number 1 choice Pat 🙂

Patrick,

Hi! I just finished my first year at PCOM and if it makes you feel any better, I know of a few people in my class who didn't get accepted until the weekend before school started. So, the waitlist does moves... Anyway though, if you have a spot at LECOM, I would take it because otherwise you might be giving up a great opportunity. No one ever said that after medical school you won't be able to come back to Philly, so think of LECOM as a nice getaway (you'll have no distractions up there.) However, if you are going to be unhappy with the education that you receive up there, then you should withdraw your acceptance and open up the spot for someone who does want to attend. Anyway though, the best advice I can give you is to keep annoying Carol Fox. Call and write her atleast once a week, and if you have any new information that could support your application, send it in.

Best of luck!!!

yeah the problem is that everytime I call (like today) I can't get through the gatekeeper (a.k.a. the secretary) to talk to an admissions counselor. She always says she's on the phone with someone... ao I ask ..can I leave or take a number to get in touch with her... so I leave my numnber and everytime no one calls me back..

I email...no response... I did send in a letter of intent and let them know about a manuscript I am preparing for publication. Today, I wanted to give the school my updated contact info should I be called because I am leaving the N.I.H area and going back to PA. Her exact words were " You have to send it in in writing with your soc sec. #, Goodbye!" VERY RUDE... I was like hold on, can you tell me if anyone was picked off the alte4rnate list yet.... "NO" expect movement in 4 weeks..... what the he** is that... no one off the list yet and its almost july. when I called before last week... it was "we are waiting for the april mcats to come in on june 20th, expect to see movement after that" .... but 4 weeks.... they had the alternates applications for months before june 20th, now they have the numbers which is what they were waiting for, so make a decision.

ARRGGGGHHHHH! the frustration.... I don't want this stress going into the difficult 4 years of med school.

It doesn't seem like they debated that long with people I know that were accepted at the school. Maybe there's alot of people on vacation.

Patrick O,
Couldn't you start at LECOM and transfer to PCOM if it means so much to you? I certainly wouldn't delay medical training were I you. Just a question...

phd2b, it's always hard to transfer from one med school to another.

PatrickO, are you sure you still want to go to PCOM? I mean they treat you like poop and I can't imagine what it's like once you're there.

To all of you on the waitlist.. here are some tips. Call about the status of your application each week and talk to the same person in admissions. Write to the dean of the medical school and admissions and express your interest in coming to the particular medical school. Also, if you have just finished college, have just published a paper, or done somthing of medical relevance update your file. Finally, get someone to call in at the end of July to highly recommend you. Make sure they speak directly to the dean of admissions. I'm not saying get some random person, but a physician or professor.

Good Luck and be patient. Last year i was on 2 waitlists myself and didn't get a call from either of them until 2 days before classes started. I quit my job and packed in 1 day-

Thanks for the info and suggestions people...

I had 2 recs from D.O.'s, 1 from my family physician (after I was put on the alternate list), and 1 from a head of internal medicine residency at a hospital that I worked, shadowed, and volunteered at for over 5 years [both PCOM alumini];
obviously I also sent many recs from Ph.D's in the humanities and science from my undergrad university;

and I also had a rec from a Ph.D that chairs the department of physiology at a M.D. medical school that I have been doing research at for the last year. I took medical biochem there with first years and got an A (gave me good exposure to the workload that I should expect at med school)

I have a publication that is coming out that could help unravel the mystery behind the release of ANF from cardiac atria.

I've sent in a letter of intent to the school, explained them of my current activities, and called to check on progress.

I'm not trying to create a laundry list here but I know I am qualified to become an osteopathic physician.... the question is am I more qualified than the other appliants on the waitlist?

There isn't much else I can do bedsides putting on a placard and standing in front of the school.

Patrick,

When you call the admissions office are you nice to the secretary? As you said, she is the "gatekeeper" and if you don't sweet talk her, you won't get anywhere. Also, keep in mind that PCOM probably has a bunch of people on their waitlist, so imagine how many other phone calls they are receiving everyday. When you call next time, ask if you can make an appointment with one of the admissions counslers so that you can find out how to strengthen your application. Besides that, don't get frustrated. You have been accepted to one school, and that is more than what some people can say. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at [email protected].

best of luck.

OK I've been seeing more action on the waitlist front so I think it's time to revive this thread.

Post up if you've recently decided to release a spot at a school.

Harleyman, if you're here, where'd you get accepted at? OK? I was wondering which school u picked over AZCOM.

Dave

SW Dave, I'm going to attend OSU-COM. I really liked both AZCOM and OSU-COM but had other things to consider. OSU-COM is about 2 1/2 hours from my house. I'll be able to attend and still keep my home and not have to move my family. 😀 😀 😀 😎

Wow!

2 1/2 hrs!

Boy, I live in Omaha and am getting a house in Des Moines and that's a 2 hour drive.

We didn't even consider staying in Omaha.

We love it in the Midwest but 2 hrs each way was just unrealistic for OUR situation. You do what's best for you harleyman. Best of luck to you.

Dave

Anyone else letting something go?

swdave is absolutely right.... you might want to reconsider. You never know what will happen with the weather and the road conditions.... I'm sure you have your reasons but I hope for your safety during those 2.5hours drive to school.... Good luck to you...

Harleyman,

There are plenty of nice houses here in Tulsa as well as some close-by suburbs that are fairly rural if that's what you're looking for =) A 2 1/2 hour commute your first year is going to be difficult, especially when you start thinking that's 5 hours you could be studying... yikes!!!

Sorry about the confusion guys my previous post was kind of hurried, but what I meant was that I'll be able to come home on the weekends, or my family can come see me depending on my schedule. I have 5 kids that are established in school two of which are from a previous marriage (so they wouldn't have been able to move with me and my visitation with them would have changed dramatically) and my wife has a good job that we don't want her to give up if she doesn't have to. Even if I would have gone to AZCOM I probably would have spent the 1st year and maybe the second on my own and going home when possible. Now being this close to home makes lots of things possible. Also the expense of being in state at Oklahoma is about half the price of AZCOM. 😀 😀 😀

I just gave up my seat at MSUCOM. Hope it helps someone. Good luck, everybody

John@PCSOM,

I'll take your MSUCOM and give someone a DMU spot. I'm going to Lansing this weekend to look at housing.

Dave

Dave, thats awesome. Congrats!!! I just got your post on the MSU site. MSUCOM really does have an awesome program, but I chose PCSOM for family reasons. We lived in Lansing while my wife was in law school and she HATED it. The grey skies drove her crazy. Then we lived in KY and she loved it so that's where we decided to stay. PCSOM has a good program also, but I think I like the systems approach better.

I went to PCOM on Thursday to discuss my chances of getting off the waitlist. On Tuesday 3 people got off the list so it is finally moving and hopefully their will be a spot for me... They explained that they try to match a person's "profile" that withdrawls with a similar one on the waitlist. In other words I need a white guy from PA to withdraw. If anybody out there doesn't want to go to PCOM and is holding onto an acceptance.. please release it to us hopeful waitlisters. I still and will continue to keep the faith that I will be a member of this class.

Pat 🙂

It's July 22nd.

It's almost hard for me to believe that I won't be starting medical school in a couple weeks. But... Alas I am not going to be getting off of the waitlist. So for a third straight year I apply again...

Pat, don't get your hopes up too much. I wish the best for you though.

I am so sorry to hear this....

My best wishes are sent your way.

WishUAS my hopes are up.... I am a damn good applicant ... one of the problems with my application that I believe hurt my chances of an acceptance was a late interview...(March 14th) at PCOM. It obviously wasn't a problem at LECOM because they accepted me right away. You can't give up hope if you really want to be a doctor. Perhaps you should meet with an admissions counselor... and consider this year off doing medical research or something like that. I wish all the best for you.

Pat 🙂

I just got a call from DMU yesterday and they moved me from alternate to accept. I declined their acceptance because I've already decided to go to Kirksville. So theirs still a spot out there! I know it's late, but not too late yet.

Hey Patrick. I wouls strongly encourage you t oreconsider the LECOM v. PCOM thing. To me it sound like you're playing with fire. If you honestly wish to be a physician, you have your ticket. LECOM is a sure thing for you unless you removed yourself. PCOM isn't at this point, you could end up burning yourself. I hope the best for you.

Wish Upon A Star.
I got into UHS last year. I'm not sure which schools you've applied to, but I know that classmates of mine got called as late as August 14 (The first day of orientation) Keep the faith. It could still happen for you. If not however, Give it another shot next year. Admissions @ UHS have said that applications are already starting to come in. Start early! this is the key. Best of luck to you and your dream.

I don't believe I am playing with "fire". I am a quality applicant that prefers to go to another school based on personal reasons. If I am a good applicant why should I not be able to got to my number one choice. It has nothing to do with "honestly" wanting to become a physician. I wouldn't have gone this far if I didn't want to.

Pat

For whatever good it may do someone out there, I released my waitlist seat at DMU on 7/25/01. So there is one more out there! Good luck! 😀

Any news yet, Pat? Is it going to be PCOM or LECOM?

Yup, I'm interested as well.... Any final decisions yet?

Hey ALL

I will be releasing my seat at NYCOM. A last minute decision but I'm sure someone out there will be glad to have my spot. I haven't formally dropped out yet. I still have to write a letter to admissions explaining my circumstances. Orientation start 8/14(manditory) and I will not be able to attend. I suggest checking with the school
on 8/15.

Good luck

Patrick O-

Quit your whining and complaining. You have a golden opportunity to become a physician, and it sounds like you're going to piss it away, or at the bare miminum go to LECOM so disgruntled that you won't get much out of your education.

What makes you think that anyone owes you anything? You have no "right" to go to PCOM. Thousands of folks would love to be in your shoes right now (you have probably already started school anyway at this point).

If this is the attitude you're going to take, then I'd say you better take a long look at yourself. Program directors will not be happy with the kind of attitudes you have displayed in these postings.

Didn't patrick get into PCOM?
