Well, I've got a place to live! I've even got some furniture to put in it. I can't wait to meet all of you, but I'm also sad about leaving some of my friends here. Goodbyes suck.

-Jillian Rae

P.S. Drive safely to everyone who has started or is preparing to start the trek to NC. I'll be leaving in about a week and a half.

Glad that you found someplace to live, Jillianrae. Where will you be staying if you don't mind me asking? Also, did you find any good deals on furniture? Recommendations would be appreciated. I am moving next week and am going to be doing hardcore furniture shopping. Thanks!

Cocoabutter,

I'm staying in a duplex on Franklin street. It's about a 3 min drive from campus. I ended up getting my furniture at a place called Hanes Discount Furniture. There was also a place called Consignment Furniture Emporium that was really inexpensive. Furniture was much cheaper there than it is in WA.

On another note, Does anyone know exactly where we are supposed to be parking on the day of orientation? We drove around the school several times, and I can't figure it out. I'm figuring I'll be hopelessly lost for the first few weeks.

I guess many of the future Demon Deacons are on headed to NC now.

According to the pre-enrollement guide (pg 7) 😉

Parking is provided in the Faculty Lot besides the Babcock Auditorium and Eden Terrace Deck. The auditorium is located on Harwthorne road.

I'll add this to the class website also

Thank you Gohan,

I read that in the pre-enrollment guide, but for the life of me, I can't figure out where that is. I guess I'll have to drive around when I get over there until I find it.

Any other future Demon Deacons still hanging out at home?

I am still in Florida...but I am leaving on July 17th.

In South FL, leaving next weekend 😎

I'm leaving the 20th, and I'm not looking foreward to the cross-country car ride with my dad. I love my parents, but I much prefer them in small doses.

In San Francisco, but my parents and I are getting on the plane tomorrow morning! We're spending this upcoming week doing some crazy furniture buying, my sister is flying out next Saturday, and then we're spending a week at the beach at Kiawah Island in SC. Definitely a much-needed rest. 🙂

Have a safe and uneventful flight. Oh, yes, and a wonderful vacation. I envy you that. I have projects to finish up at work, so it doesn't look like I get a vacation at all.

So close to the start of school, no more vacation! Must have more vacation!

j/k, any of you know if Sprint PCS has good coverage in Winston-Salem? I'm thinking of using a cell phone instead of a landline to save $. Also, what have you decided upon for internet connectivity at home? My place has Time-Warner cable but I don't know about DSL availability since I'll probably skip getting a phone #.

More Vacation please!

gobruins,

I'm planning on sticking with my AT&T Wireless account as it worked very well while I was visiting Winston-Salem. As far as internet and such, I haven't even begun to look into it. I figure I'll get around to it when I get down there.

P.S. I completly agree with the vacation thing. Today is my last day of work. Time to start packing.

I'm sticking with my sprint PCS, it was excellent when I visited WS and no roaming charges. As for internet, I'm thinking cable modem. Broadband is a must for me 😉

I may skip the landline also

I am also sticking with Sprint PCS. I thought about skipping the landline, but I won't be getting broadband, so I need my phone to dial up (I already have MSN and don't plan on getting rid of it just yet). If there are better options, I will adjust accordingly. Also, I am not changing my cell phone number, so my landline will be used as my local number. The landline is running me about $40 a month (no long distance needed), so it is not too expensive.

Hi all,

I just purchased cable broadband from Time Warner via the Road Runner ISP. There's a half off promotion right now for the first three months, no contract required. The regular monthly fee is 44.95. You're also not required to purchase any cable TV services. Cable modem is lended to you free of charge as well. This was the least expensive option I could find for broadband.

Hey gobruins, was that triad time warner cable?
That's what I'm leaning towards also. I like the fact that able is not required

Just so you know, there's a 15GB/month limit on the bandwidth you can use with RR. If you exceed that, they will charge you something ridiculous.

Ya, it's triad time warner. I agree the 15GB/mo limit is annoying but if I start to exceed it, I'll just cancel and switch to another provider (after the 3 months at half off! =P). Now I must go and argue with Sprint PCS to give me unlimited PCS to PCS on their lowest rate plan. Damn those representatives are so stubborn.

Signed up for Time warner using earthlink, there was a deal on earthlink.com for $29 for the first 6 months.
As far as I saw, no bandwith limit for earthlink

Orientation starts a week from Monday! Anyone else feeling excited, yet a little anxious & nervous, too?

I'm not sure what they mean by "work casual" so I have no idea what to wear and I still can't find where we're supposed to park the 1st day. I may just pay to park in the hospital garage to avoid feeling lost.

Orientation starts a week from Monday!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Nervous and anxious don't even begin to describe what I'm feeling. I'm not even in Winston-Salem yet. I still have a cross-country move to make before I can think about orientation. I'm leaving first thing tomorrow morning.

Well, I made it. I am getting settled in Winston-Salem. I am enjoying my sparsely furnished apartment. I am slowly finding my way around, but also have yet to find the assigned parking area. I also have not decided what to wear. was thinking khakis and some sort of top, but am unsure about shoes. Do you think open-toe would be okay? I don't think that a week is enough vacation for me. I just quit my job last week....I am so tired.

Have a safe trip Jillianrae!

Don't worry about what you wear. You will just be having group meetings in the auditorium and won't be judged at all. Wear something comfortable and try to be calm, it will be a lot less exciting than you anticipate. As for parking, it is on Hawthorne Road just south of business 40. If you are coming from 1st St, turn onto Hawthorne towards the hospital. immediately after going under the I-40B overpass, turn left and then take your first right. There are 2 student lots right next to each other, the upper and the lower lots. park in either one as they will hopefully be open for you guys. Then just walk up the hill and walk to the courtyard with the statue of Bowman Gray. The Babcock auditorium is right there on your right.

relax and have fun. orientation week is very laid back. enjoy all the free food and get to know people before classes start. try not to stress out. go out at night, enjoy each others company, don't worry about buying books except for whatever you'll need for gross anatomy (they're changing it this year but you'll most likely need a dissection kit, a box of gloves, and whatever manual they are deciding to use). go ahead and get your dissection kit early at the bookstore, b/c for some reason they always forget to order enough for everyone. Don't buy any books until the first week or so, b/c most of them you don't need, and you will probably get about 50 emails in the first few weeks from upperclassmen trying to sell old books.

your orientation schedule looks pretty standard. you'll get your computers on wednesday, but they give you your printers tuesday afternoon. don't ask me why, they just do. you'll be done friday after lunch.

have fun, enjoy your time, don't worry, you'll be taken care of.

Go out every night, if that's your thing....and enjoy the Michael's party. It's one of the few times all the classes get together.

Oh yeah, the Michael's party. When is that, next Friday or Saturday?

Perrrrrrrfect timing....

thanks for the info wfu2005 and wakemedheel

I arrived in WS yesterday....tired.........
looking around at my empty apt with a few boxes and DIAL-UP connx ( I miss my DSL)

😎

Anybody bored enough to take me to the grocery store? I'm living right next to the medical school. PM me!

If you know anybody selling an inexpensive car (currently looking for any P.O.S. honda or toyota) lemme know too.

Yay! Made it to Winston-Salem, but I'm totally surrounded by boxes in my place - I can barely move around. I never knew I had so much stuff.
Can't wait to see ya'll on Monday!

So is everyone ready? I can't believe that we are starting orientation in less than 24 hours. July 28th seemed so far away, yet it came so fast. I plan on doing nothing and enjoying my last day of vacation. 🙁 Although, I am sort of a nerd and am looking forward to starting school and meeting my classmates.

No more free time 🙁

I'm sort of ready I guess and I'm still trying to fully understand Winston-salem's "unique" highway/street system.

Ok back to being bored

hey guys, hope the move has gone smoothly for all. I'm surprisingly well moved in, although I have to admit that it's mainly due to having both my parents here with me last week--we worked like dogs! looking forward to meeting everyone! This goes against Internet anonymity, I suppose, but my name is Meaghan if see you guys tomorrow!
