As Amazon Looms, Walgreens May Buy Giant Distributor AmerisourceBergen

Well if CVS was allowed to buy Aetna I don't see what would stop Walgreens from acquiring Amerisource

Walgreens already owns 1/4 of AmerisourceBergen. Some have predicted this for years - amazing that it's happening sooner than expected though.

That was rumored to always be the intention, except for antitrust issues with DoJ during Obama's Administration. In this business-friendly environment, they may go for it. However, DoJ and the IRS are supposedly targeting companies that had done tax inversion for special enforcement, so no one knows yet whether the ABC takeover will pass scrutiny. Amazon is a factor, but they are more worried and reactive to the pressures that CVS and Wal-Mart are doing in terms of vertical integration. Amazon is considered to be a distant (though menacing) threat compared with Wal-Mart in particular which is an active one in terms of supply-chain control.
