I work at a LTC Pharmacy where we're allowed to wear sweats if we want and I didn't know this beforehand. I went to the interview wearing black pants and a nice jacket (I'm a girl). The manager and everybody else there were wearing jeans and tshirts so I felt a little out of place. But she mentioned how nicely I was dressed and I managed to get a higher salary. Point is dress nicely but I don't think you necessarily need to wear a suit. Maybe the suit without the jacket.

Definitely bring a resume (they probably need one anyway for their files)

I also work at Human Resources at my college so common questions for job interviews are:

- Describe yourself, hobbies, adjectives that you would used to describe yourself, how your past employers will describe you, etc
- Strengths and weaknesses
- Plans about the future
- When you're available to work
- Ask them questions too!

I know that there's lots of sample interview questions online.

I would recommend wearing a long sleeve shirt and a tie. I think that a suit would be overkill. Having a resume wouldn't hurt, but I don't think its expected. I didn't have very difficult questions in my tech interview. They are just trying to get to know you and get an idea of your professionalism and overall demeanor and/or work ethic.

My boyfriend started working at Walgreens in January. He is required to wear a dress shirt, tie, dress slacks and dress shoes at work. This is required for his walgreens in North Las Vegas. So, you should probably dress the same for the interview. He brought his resume just in case, I don't remember if he needed it or not.

Good Luck!:luck:

If you get the job, remember that working at some Walgreens (or some Wal-marts) locations can be a bit stressful compared to smaller or slower pharmacies. If you feel as if the job is too stressful, don't let it sour your opinion of a pharmacy career. There are other places and fields in pharmacy to work.

As far as the interview goes, think of why you want to work in a pharmacy and what you bring to the job that they would value. Have those answers ready for the interview.

It doesn't hurt to say you are good at working with people, that you finish what you start (unfinished tasks or break downs in communication between techs/pharmacists are sources of chaos in pharmacies), and that you take pride in your work.

I got a job at Walgreens last month as a tech and here is how the interview went....

Pharmacy Manager: So you want to work as a pharmacy tech?
Me: Yes, I'm working on my prerequisites and will be applying for pharmacy school this fall.
Pharmacy Manager: Okay, I will send your paperwork off to the LABP and get you set up for a drug screen.
Me: Okay

I actually did the interview during my lunch break for my job at Xavier! LOL

I had an interview at CVS two days ago (for a regular cashier...hope to transfer to the pharmacy when a spot opens). I wore a nice dress shirt, tie, pants, and Sperry boat shoes. I brought my resume and a nice notebook and pen. The manager based his questions off of what he read from my resume, like "What do you like the most from your past job? Your least? Tell me about your extracurriculars?" etc. I asked him some questions at the end. He told me that I was his best interview so far and that I should expect him to call me by the end of this week. :D

I had also called earlier that day to confirm the interview, and called later to thank him and give references. Just be professional, calm, and clear headed. Good luck!

So interview was today, I think it went well, the manager just asked me a few questions such as:

  • Why do you want to work at Walgreens?
  • Why do you want to become a Pharmacy Tech?
  • Why do you want to work in the Pharmacy dept.?
  • How far do you live from the store?
  • When can you start?
  • Do you know how much a pharmacist makes?
  • Why do you want to go into pharmacy?
  • Are there any Walgreens near your college?
  • Are you willing to transfer over there after school starts again?
  • Are you willing to work at the register?
  • What did you do at your last job?
As far as dress, I just wore my dress pants, dress shirt, dress shoes, and tie and brought along a resume but he didn't want it.

To get an interview, I applied at the store, then called back a day later to make sure the manager got my application and asked if he had time to review it. The manager told me he'd call back and that if he didn't just give him a call. So a few days later, I called him back and he asked me to come in 2 days later.

Now I have to wait for him to call me but I'm planning on taking the job as a cashier just so I have my foot in the door.

The short answer is to be yourself. First and foremost , personality , Do not attempt to suck up or act like something your not. I am a person who used to conduct interviews on a weekly basis myself. I like to look for someone thats very comfortable maintaining a conversation while under pressure. If you treat the interview as if it is a regular conversation about yourself (because it is!) and manage to squeeze in some personality(while maintaining a decent amount of professionalism obviously), and just be honest , you would not feel as if you were under any pressure, and be a definite shoe in. I can honestly say I NEVER "failed" an interview. In fact, most interviews I had ended up not being interviews at all because I would some how manage to get very good in turning a very serious interview into a fun, social conversation.

What to wear?

The very best that you can wear. This includes black dress pants, white dress shirt and tie. Furthermore, if you have a blazer , by all means wear one. Face is shaved or mustache neatly groomed etc. You want to make sure you are looking your best. Keep in mind that what you wear is making a statement of how you want your interviewer to perceive you professionally. Depending on how strict the interviewer is, your dress code at times, may make or break you.

When you send your resume, the protocol should be that you send the interviewer, or the person receiving your resume via email, or in person. When they call to schedule your interview you confirm the date and time and make sure to make plans to be in 15 minutes early, no earlier, no later. When you are actually at the interview, you should have several copies of your resume and any certifications or recommendations that you may want to bring to your interview that you can pass out to your interviewer, or interviewers. everything should be in a nice briefcase or folder, this shows them indirectly that you are very organized and very serious about the position at hand.

Also another important thing is to sound that you are actually interested in the job , and plan for long term growth and experience and be sincere about it.

First go online to www.walgreens.com and fill out an application. Once you do that go to the stores where you sent your application, I think they allow you to pick two or three stores. Talk to the pharmacy manager because the store manager don't know anything about what the pharmacy is hiring for, I learned that the hard way. Let them know you filled out an application online and you need to finish the other have in the store. That's also your time to sell yourself. Find out if they need people now and let them know that your available. That's all I did and I got the job on the spot.

this is so true. Be afraid.. be very afraid (I NEED MY VICODIN/SOMA/XANAX NOW!!!!...)

Working as a tech at walgreens has quashed any desire I once had to apply to pharmacy school. But my bosses make great money and like their jobs for the most part... I guess they're just insane..... :)

Walgreens also requires you to get the CPhT within a year of hire... You can pass it with minimal study time (if you're the stereotypical smart pre-pharm kid) but my boss has made an extra effort to teach me a lot of extra stuff about dosing, different drug interactions, etc. Being a pharm. tech is a great way to see about what it will be like to be a pharmacist in the chain retail setting (I know this because I see everything they do). But the job is stressful... and you'll deal with a fair amount of ungrateful people who'll take out all their frustration on you if the state medicaid program won't authorize a 2 week early refill on their opiods.

And pray you get a good RX manager.... and a store manager who knows his/her place. Hopefully you wont get stuck with a loss prevention lady who is nosy as all hell.... "Hey, give me your C-II keys" (to my boss)... needless to say she was put in her place.

Nah, don't worry about it. There are a lot of retail horror stories here on SDN so maybe that's why HD Chang gave you the Nelson quote. But that's all right because you want to work there for the experience and to beef up your profile.

Call them in about a week if you don't hear anything back... good luck!

i just applied for a walgreens position, the store asistant manager said she would forward the application to the pharmacist. i was so nervous and i think she could tell...i don't know how to not be nervous any suggestions? she was so helpful and said i could call back to check on the app.

i guess i should just look at the interview as a question/answer session.

I agree. This is my story. Some people are so ungrateful and rude!!! Sorry, it's long.....

A customer brought in an old box of Mometasone lotion to order a refill. I punched it in, verified the box again, gave her the box back but she refused to take it --> so i threw it in our DPI box. She said she needed the med asap so we got it ready within 10 minutes. It turned out she didn't pick up the med until the next day. Then she said she gave me a nasonex box and I put in Mometasone (generic for Elocon lotion) instead. She said I gave her the wrong med. I said it is the same as the box she gave me. If she'd like, I could order nasonex now for her. She was mad and complained to corporate. The pharmacy manager gave her the nasonex for free afterwards and did not do a report or told me about it. Three months later, yesterday, CA State Board of Pharmacy came to investigate! This all happened in March and now state board inspector came to our pharmacy to investigate because she claimed that she got a wrong medication. They thought is it a wrong medication compared to the leaflet --> serious --> they came to investigate! I don't know how this gonna turn out because the pharmacy manager was off yesterday. He handled this customer so he will look at it today.

The reason I still remember her was because she was extremely rude and my coworker said that i handled her pretty well. I even said: "Maybe she has a bad day!"

I've been working so hard, always be so nice and go an extra mile ( call MD, call INS to override vacation or lost med, etc.) to help patients --> this is what I got! :(

haha. my experience as a pharmacy tech in retail scared me away from applying to pharmacy school. though the money is very good and some people have an affinity for it.
