I'm trying to figure out my chances for an MD/DO school and how I can strengthen my app for next year in case it doesn't work out this year. I'm an ORM from New Hampshire, currently on my 2nd gap year. Majored in Biology and minored in Philosophy at a T40 university in the Honors program. If anyone wants to see my PS please PM me.

MCAT: 512 (C/P 128, CARS 127, B/B 126, 131 P/S)

GPA: 3.67

sGPA: 3.52

Shadowing: 90 hrs (virtual), 40 hrs (in person) ---- 130 hrs total
  • Shadowed surgeons for a month in Pakistan, learned a lot about healthcare systems in developing nations
Non-clinical volunteering: 240 hrs so far working directly with underserved populations. 200 additional hrs anticipated by matriculation. (~400 hrs total)

Leadership:
On e-board of global health organization at my college for 3 years (360 hrs), layout editor for undergraduate research journal (95 hrs)

Research: 850 hrs
  • 300 of these hours came from clinical research on racial and ethnic health disparities (I am credited on a poster presentation but I found out after I submitted my primary app so I can no longer include this detail on my AMCAS app but will be sure to include it on AACOMAS).
  • 200 hrs from social work research on the social/economic/health outcomes of distributing 7 million solar lamps in rural India
Gap years:

I worked for a health tech startup researching risk factors for chronic disease. I've also been delivering food for DoorDash just to make some cash on the side and have some more money to put towards school. I've also continued virtually shadowing physicians weekly and will continue until matriculation. 2 months ago, I started working as an advocacy fellow for a global health organization.

I'm currently in the process of applying for a virtual scribe job that just opened up near me, but I'm not sure if its worth taking the job as it will be virtual and I know people on here have said that virtual is not ideal. However, I've also heard that virtual shadowing is perfectly acceptable, so I'm still not quite sure what the deal is with virtual scribing. Looking for advice on whether you think its worth pursuing the virtual scribing option, or should I continue volunteering + DoorDash unless I get no love from med schools by Thanksgiving?

That sGPA+ORM is going to really hurt your chances tbh. I wouldn't expect much love from UVM, BU, UMiami, Jefferson, or UColorado.. Need to increase your list.

Hey, I’m actually a ***** and calculated it wrong. My sGPA is at a 3.52 and cGPA is 3.67. Hopefully my odds aren’t too horrible

Did you really apply with no face to face clinical experiences? 🙄 How are you going to convince ADCOMS that you want to spend the next 35+ years dealing with the sick injured and dying? Even most of your shadowing is virtual . (Get some in person shadowing with a primary care doc.)

What exactly did you do for your nonclinical volunteering?

I would skip the virtual scribing and get a scribing job in person. Or go be a nurses aid or medical assistant or patient transporter. Anything that will get you up close and personal with sick people.

The only thing that is consistent about your application is your interest in Global Health. Absolutely nothing says you want to be a doctor. Have you looked into grad programs in Global Health? That might be a better career path to consider.

My non clinical volunteering work in college was working for an urban outreach initiative at my college that provided pre-collegiate support for students at public high schools in the area. I was a student mentor in the program. After graduating, I’ve worked as an advocacy fellow for the Fund for Global Health

My dad is a doctor and most of my aunts and uncles are doctors, so I’ve always had a ton of knowledge about the medical field. I was also a part-time caretaker for my grandfather who had ALS. I mentioned in my personal statement how this was important in my journey towards medicine. I didn’t put it in my experiences because it felt informal and I didn’t consider it, but looking back I should have put it in there. I’m planning on including that in an update letter.

I actually started working a patient transporter job about a month ago and am planning on also including this in the update letter. I’ve also recently had the opportunity to shadow a DO primary care physician. I will surely include this on my DO apps (which I am finishing up and sending out now). I’ll also include the part-time caretaker experience with my grandfather in my DO apps.

Thanks for the help and any further advice is appreciated.
