School list:
My goal is to stay close to home so I want to only apply to the following schools: Columbia, Touro and Rutgers. I've thought about this a lot but I realized that I would much rather take a gap year and try again at these schools than go somewhere else.

Being an international resident makes getting a seat at a school much more difficult. You may be competing with a few hundred international students for only a handful of seats. I strongly advise applying more broadly if you are truly set on attending dental school. Columbia had 2 international students for 2024, Rutgers had 2, and Touro had 8.

The breakdown for International students by your colleges for the class of 2024:
Touro: 126 Applied, 30 interviewed, 22 offered a seat.
Rutgers: 174 applied, 17 accepted
Columbia: 127 applied, 4 accepted

This is also 3 cycles behind, as apps get more competitive there will be higher standards for international students. Canadians are also more likely to get a seat than other international students, so keep that in mind.

Your best chance would be Touro or Rutgers. NYU would also be likely to take you considering you're applying to all NY state schools. If being in NY is what you want, adding NYU, Stony Brook, and UBuffalo may also be of interest to you. I personally would increase your list. Being a reapplicant means you will be held to higher standards compared to first-time applicants, and schools will want to see what you've improved upon.

Stony Brook: 56 applied, 6 accepted, 4 enrolled
UBuffalo: 234 applied, 18 interviewed, 11 accepted, 5 enrolled
NYU: 337 applied, 120 interviewed, 47 accepted, 46 enrolled

*these are stats for only international students, the schools get 1500-3000 apps a year, so you are competing with other US students for seats, and schools will prioritize US residents first.

Be realistic with yourself, you have an amazing DAT score but an average GPA, but below average for Columbia. I would consider adding a couple more schools to your list. Keep in mind that as an international student, you also cannot take government loans and need to have at least half of the tuition available in escrow for schools (this could vary by school, but this is what I have read). Unless you have family members willing to cosign for you on American loans. So just keep everything in mind when applying, dental school is expensive, and the schools you have listed are in the ballpark of 450-600k after graduation.

Keep up the volunteer work and good luck! Apply as close to June 1st as you possibly can to maximize your chances!
