Subforum: What are my Chances? WAMC Veterinary

Hi! I’m a 23 year old female from CT and am applying for the first time this cycle! I graduated with my undergrad early, finishing in December of 2019, so I am anxious to get started on my veterinary journey. I’ve been told that applying to more schools can be better so I am considering Tufts, University of Florida, Iowa state, Ohio state, Ross university, university of Tennessee, Virginia-Maryland and possibly more? Any advice appreciated! I’m undecided as of now exactly what I would like to do in the veterinary field- possible sa, maybe something more in research but I don’t have the experience to back that up.

Cumulative GPA: 3.64

science GPA: 3.50

last 45: 3.65

Any degrees achieved: B.S. in health sciences minor in biology

  • shadowed LA vets (surgeries and appointments) currently around 10 hours but should be higher when I submit- unsure what the exact will be

Summarize any concerns you have:

I’m really anxious that I don’t have enough experience hours to be a competitive candidate. Should I attempt to pull back on my hours in the kennel at my vet and instead spend more time as a tech assistant/shadowing? I still am with the techs and doctors while working in the kennel but not as consistently or getting the same experience as when I’m working as a tech. I was originally hired in the kennel so I’d feel bad to leave them in the lurch (although my future career is more important to me). My main concern is will it be worth applying this round? I see other posts like this and feel like I’m lacking and the self doubt is setting in. I know my hours aren’t super high but I’m positive this is what I want to do with my life and I really want to get accepted. Also does when you send in your application impact your likeliness to be accepted? I want to get as many experience hours as possible but don’t want to risk sending my application too late. Thank you so much for any wisdom and advice!

Personally, I would recommend switching to more hours that allow you to count them as veterinary experience hours. I am also struggling with low hours mainly because I have not been able to find the right opportunity yet. As for the timing of submitting your application, submitting it in June does not give you any advantage over submitting it in August. However, I have had the importance of not waiting to submit it too late stressed to me again and again because you never know what technical difficulties might arise. Most of what I have heard is to give yourself at least two weeks before the deadline (if not earlier) because that gives you time to contact any individuals/organizations for missing paperwork. Overall though your application looks great to me! Best of luck!
