Hey guys I really just need some advice on my application. I am terrified I will not get in because my GPA. Here is a rundown of everything! I am extremely passionate about vet med, in particular surgery!

22, Female, NY Resident, Traditional, 1st time applying

Schools applying
- majority of those in U.S, and caribbean schools and Glasgow
Overall GPA: 3.47 upon completion of Bachelors (should be pushed to 3.5 after completion of summer classes)
  • My GPA for my associates degree was a 3.97 (i know a downward trend is not good but going online for covid negatively affected by GPA and ability to learn as I am a very hands on learner)

Degree(s): Bachelors and Associate of Animal Science via UConn

Veterinary Experience:
Experience - Total of over 5,000 (hrs) mainly focused in surgery
  • Work at 2 big speciality hospitals in NY/CT (one being Cornell affiliate called Cornell Vet Specialists) as a Surgical Assistant in both of their Surgery Departments - around 4,000 hours combined
    • Have gained valuable scrub in experience (scrub in with surgeons every surgery) which I am told is very good to have on an my application
  • Worked at as a Surgical Dental Assistant at a dental only vet practice during college - around 200-300 hours
  • Internship as a vet assistant at general practice - around 200 hours
  • UConn - worked with University’s vet during classes and labs doing vaccines and other procedures - around 100 hours

Animal Experience:
Experience - total of 1,000 hours

  • Student intern at Animal Control local to my college for 1 year - around 200-300 hours
  • Experience with University’s farm animals through hands on classes and labs - around 100 hours
  • Little I - University ran show, students in charge of training farm animals for show - around 50 hours

Research:
No really formal research experience - covid hindered this as I was online for a year and a half during sophomore and junior year. Senior year I balanced 2 vet jobs.
Have some experience within classes/labs where we conducted research for studies on Universities cattle, sheep and equine animals

Extracurriculars/Awards:
  • Deans lists all of freshman, sophomore and half of junior year
  • Summa cum laude from my associates degree
  • Award of Excellence - awarded during associates - awarded to senior with highest GPA
  • Outstanding Senior Women Academic Achievement award - during associates
  • Part of Agricultural Sorority on campus
  • Member of Pre-Vet club, operation rhino club and paws and claws club (all animal related clubs)
  • Member of intramural volleyball and soccer
Non-Animal Employment:
Experience - around 400-500 hours
  • Worked a front desk job at a gym in high school to freshman year of college for 3 years - around 300-400 hours
  • Student intern at Orthopedic surgeons office during high school - around 100 hours

Certifications
  • Certified in CPR Basic and advanced for animals through my surgical assistant jobs

LORs:
Total of 6 - still deciding which to choose
  1. Board certified General Surgeon of surgery department I work in
  2. Board certified Orthopedic Surgeon of surgery department I work in
  3. Advisor and former head of Animal Science dept at UConn
  4. Former Advisor and teacher at UConn
  5. Dental Veterinarian - my closest relationship with
  6. Surgery supervisor at one of my hospitals

I know my GPA is not high which is my downfall but I am hoping my experience makes up for it. Covid really messed up my GPA as going online was difficult for me to adapt to. Please lmk what you think and any advice!

Your experiences are quality and diverse. What are your science GPA and last 45?

My science gpa is a 3.5 and my last 45 is a 3.3, I am mostly an A/B+ student but I got 3 C/C+'s that weighed by gpa down.

I think you have a fair shot. Apply diversely. Your only real weak point is the downward trend/last 45 but it’s not terrible. You can explain this. Your experience shows you can handle and are well versed in the field. Your GPA is decent. If you can get your cum up to a 3.5 and your last 45 up you’d be in better shape. Best of luck.
