I wanted to see if I had a chance if applied to any of the UC med schools and whether I needed to take a gap year in order to boost my chances? Also, are there schools I should try to apply to with my stats?

Top UC
cGPA 3.8
sGPA 3.7
MCAT 518

Pretty decent ECs/hobbies, 1 year of research, significant life experience/obstacles

You should receive interviews at the UC's with your stats. However, for CA residents it is always a good idea to apply to OOS schools also and I suggest these with your stats:
Boston University
Tufts
Hofstra
Einstein
Mount Sinai
NYU
Jefferson
Duke
Miami
Tulane
Cincinnati
Pittsburgh
Case Western
Washington University

Thank you! Also, when picking schools, how should I use the MSAR? Should I be focusing more on the mission statements as opposed to stats?
