Hi all, WAMC?

cGPA: 3.16
sGPA: 3.09
MCAT: 511
Undergraduate: UNC Chapel Hill (public)
Major: Biology/Chemistry (double)
Residency: North Carolina
Demographic: 24yo M
Ethnicity: Asian
Clinical Hours: Scribing (1000+ hrs), Shadowing (200 hrs), Volunteering in Medical Simulation (150 hrs)
Volunteer/Community Service: Healthcare fundraising (35 hours), Global Health Club/Medical Brigade in South America (200 hrs)
Extracurriculars: Technology Startup (500 hrs)
Leadership: VP of Global Health Club
Awards: Dean’s List (four semesters)

I applied for the first time last cycle to 12 schools but I did not receive interview invite.. although I think my application was fairly late (did not turn in secondaries until after August)

What do you all think my chances are?

Should I reapply and just apply earlier? Any schools you recommend? Should I do SMP vs Post-Bacc? Should I retake MCAT? (Also my MCAT was in 2018 so I believe this is the last year I could apply with that score)

All feedback welcome.. thank you.

Hello Faha,

Thank for your quick response. I had applied to the following schools:

1. Albert Einstein
2. East Carolina University (Brody)
3. George Washington
4. Georgetown
5. Nova Southeastern (MD)
6. Penn State
7. Rosalind Franklin
8. Tufts
9. Tulane
10. University of North Carolina
11. University of Miami
12. Wake Forest University

You are not competitive for MD schools with your stats which is why you received no interviews. You could receive interviews at some DO schools and I suggest these:
ACOM
ARCOM
NYIT-AR
UP-KYCOM
WVSOM
LUCOM
UIWSOM
LECOM (all schools)
PCOM Georgia and South Georgia
WCU-COM
BCOM
LMU-DCOM
MU-COM

You can check with CUSOM and VCOM but I believe your GPA is below their cutoffs.

I understand. I am open to DO but would still much prefer matriculating to an MD program. I was accepted to a MS in Biomedical Sciences program, do you think this would be beneficial in bolstering my application to become competitive for MD programs?

Do SmP

Either a SMP or a DIY post bacc. Remember, though, that there is no guarantee you will receive a MD acceptance even if you do well in a SMP or post bacc. You could start DO school in 2021 or perhaps eventually start MD school in 2023. Some applicants keep trying for MD and by the time they realize they should have applied DO in their first cycle those in their applicant cohort who choose DO in their first cycle have already finished medical school.

Yes, you should apply earlier, but you need to improve that science GPA, preferably an SMP (which I think you have gotten into). MD programs will want you to do 3.7+ GPA in your MS program. Find a program with a good linkage for streamlined interview at a school of your choice.
