25F, MI Resident, First time applicant. I took couple gap years due to VERY LOW vet hours, it was really hard to get a job as a kennel tech or vet assistant and not many clinics were willing to shadow me for some reason. I finally found a vet clinic who allowed me to shadow their surgeries, and eventually they hired me as a vet assistant!
I'm mainly interested in working at a small animal GP that also serves reptiles.
I am applying to Michigan State, UMN, Tufts, Purdue, Cornell, Penn, LIU, and UIUC.
Cumulative GPA (including Master's) : 3.80
Cumulative UG GPA: 3.83
Cumulative Master's GPA: 3.56 (it's because half of the courses are Pass or Fail, all of my graded courses were either A+ or B+s. Also this program was very competitive and hard, def set me up for vet school in the future).
science GPA: 3.75
last 45: ~3.75
Any degrees achieved:
B.S. in Animal Science
M.S. in Pharmacology
GRE results: Q/V/W
Veterinary Experience: ~750 hours
- Vet assistant at a GP
- Temp Vet assistant and Kennel Tech at a GP/boarding facility
- Shadowing at veterinary clinics, including exotics and small animal general practices. Watched cool surgeries such as TPLO and splenectomy!!! So cool
- Shadowing a lab animal vet at laboratory animal facility at my Master's institution
- Shadowing a shelter veterinarian at the humane society that I volunteer at.
Animal Experience: 531 hours
- Reptile and Amphibian Volunteer at an animal conservancy
- Student Animal Care Taker at MSU Veterinary Diagnostic Lab
- Volunteer at a local humane society
- Volunteer at a cat cafe that fosters kittens from the local humane society that I volunteer at
- Pet sitting (including reactive dogs, geckos, and cats)
- Large animal behavior student participation at MSU through a course. Me and my classmates created and conducted a behavior research for swine, cows, sheep, and zoo animals under our professor's supervision.
- Assistant of therapeutic horse riding.
Research Experience: ~240 hours
- Master's literature review thesis talking about animal models of a rare developmental eplieptic encephalopathy and suggesting new animals models to advance the biomedical research of that disease based.
- Literature review about diversity in veterinary students and veterinarians. Presented an academic poster at my college's research symposium.
Awards/scholarships:
- Dean's List for all 4 years of UG
- Honor's College for all 4 years of UG
Extracurriculars:
- Pre-vet student association for 4 years.
- Joined a club that promotes animal welfare in South Korea and provided husbandry for campus kittens. Was elected as a social media coordinator who posted on their social media about TNR infos for the cats and any other informations about animals in Seoul.

Personal Statement
- Focused on my experience as a first gen immigrant and how my first kitten's euth made me realize how important diversity and language barrier is to create a safe, trusting relationship between the doctor and the patient. I'm so bad at summarizing, and thank u to those who helped me writing my PS! It really helped me alot.
I think I am mainly concerned about lack of diversity in my vet hours, trust me I tried my best but there were limited amount of large animal vets near me and others didn't respond or rejected me due to already having too many students. Another concern is that I have a crazy low study abroad GPA, due to depression, and I wrote an explanation section about this issue (VMCAS did not include my study abroad grade in my cumulative GPA). Also worried about my kinda low Master's GPA, but it's lower because half of my courses were pass or fail and the graded courses were either A+ or B+. Thank you for reading this thread!!!
