Background: I was aimless until the summer before my senior year of undergrad. Had a couple of events happen + bad junior year that served as a wake-up call. Started thinking of potential career paths. I was interested in healthcare or doing some evolutionary biology research. For my senior year, I worked as an EMT and in a lab studying plant adaptations. After shadowing some doctors at the end of my senior year, I decided on med school. Taken 1 gap year so far. My biggest worries are GPA, lack of clinical volunteering and leadership, and all my non-clinical volunteer activities started 10 months before the application cycle.

  1. cGPA: 3.46. I went to CC for 2 years (3.50 cGPA), had a significant dip in junior year after transferring to a 4-year (2.94 GPA), and had a 3.73 GPA for senior year. cGPA for 4-year institution: 3.42.
    I didn’t know how to study efficiently, which was exposed when I started taking higher-level science classes.

  2. sGPA: AMCAS: 3.35; AACOMAS: 3.37
  3. MCAT: 514(128/128/130/128)
  4. CT resident
  5. URM: Black(West african, immigrated to the US at 17)
  6. CC for 2 years, State school 4-year institution
  7. Clinical experience: 2050 hours
    EMT for 18 months (Summer + Senior year + 6 months of gap year): 1300 hours
    ED Tech 6 months of gap year: 750 hours
  8. Research experience: Undergrad research in plant evo lab(Senior year): 680 hours.
    1 oral presentation at departmental symposium, one mid-author publication anticipated during the application cycle.
  9. Shadowing: 32 hours
    8 hours Infectious disease, 16 hours hospitalist, 8 hours general surgery
  10. Non-clinical Volunteering: 282 hours at time of application
    120 hours Crisis Text Line (started October 2024);
    52 hours delivering food packages for a food pantry (Started August 2024);
    110 hours in a homeless shelter (Started January 2025; 5 hours a week)
  11. Non-clinical employment:
    Retail: 2220 hours through freshman and sophomore years, averaging about 20 hours weekly.
    Food delivery: 2100 hours from junior year of undergrad through 6 months of gap year, averaging about 15 hours a week
  12. Awards/Honours: a couple of dean's lists
  13. LORs: Lab PI; Professor who was a Research Associate in the lab, and I took 2 of his classes, an EM doctor I work with, and the Hospitalist I shadowed.

Thank you for the list, @Faha. Also, do you think I actually have a shot at schools like Brown and Einstein because my cGPA and sGPA are so out of range based on data from MSAR?
Thank you!

Yes. The Black applicant pool is small and only ~200 apply each year with a GPA of 3.2+ AND a MCAT of 513+. So every MD school will be competing for those applicants.
