Oh also all my letters of rec are from 2020, is it fine as a long as I get one from this year?

I don’t want to offend but it’s way too top heavy for a third time applicant. Also I would say that for a third cycle, you should have DO schools unless you can only imagine yourself as an MD. Work on interview skills first and foremost.

Hello everyone, I was hoping I could get some help with my school list as I think this is what really hurt me in the past. Also my first time applying I only applied to 10 schools, so for the majority of these schools this would only be my second time reapplying. I will also include probably 4 DO schools. I really am not interested in DO at all just because I do not like the holistic healing aspect, but ofc I cannot risk my MCAT expiring. . .
Save yourself time and money if you will be totally miserable attending a DO school if it is your only acceptance. And it sounds like you really have no interest in DO.

I have been working doing covid testing in a lab for the last 2 years and really wanna switch to teaching English in another country. Do you think that’s something that could hurt my application since I’d be leaving my current volunteering?

  1. sGPA: 3.65, cGPA: 3.72
  2. MCAT: 516 S/P 129, CARS 128, Bio 128, Psy/Soc 131
  3. CA resident
  4. My ethnicity/race: I typically pick race white and ethnicity latino bc I am mixed race but apparently this is confusing? let me know what you think
  5. Undergrad: UCI
  6. Clinical Experience:
    1. Volunteer caretaker: 400 hours
    2. UCI medical center volunteer: 30 hours - cut short due to COVID
  7. Research
    1. Undergrad research for 2 years (about 800 hours total)- student journal publication & poster presentation
    2. short research project during summer in Singapore (80 hours)
    3. assisted with clinical research in Netherlands (80 hours)
  8. Shadowing
    1. 30 hours shadowing internal medicine- HIV specialist
    2. 60 hours shadowing ophthalmologist
  9. Nonclinical volunteering
    1. volunteered with red cross club primarily raising money for orphanage in Mexico (500 hours)
    2. needle exchange volunteer, kind of medical & community service as I give needles to people who need & also watch a Dr treat their wounds. (200 hours at start of application & will earn more)
  10. Extra info
    1. Worked as a tutor for children in school for about 2.5 years during undergrad
    2. krav maga is a big hobby of mine, lots of discipline involved
    3. worked throughout college as a barista and in food industry
    4. planning on starting to teach english in korea for my gap year since I currently work as an MLT doing COVID testing and it really isn't my passion. And many clinical jobs simply do not pay enough for me to be able to afford application costs. So i'm just trying to not make myself miserable when having to reapply - it is honestly taking a big toll on my mental health
  11. Honors in bio sci & cum laude
  12. Background info
    1. Last year I had interviews at top schools NYU, UCSF, Kaiser, & UCSD the year before - maybe based on my stats my app doesn't seem that strong but I have overcome a lot of adversity in my life including having an abusive parent and another struggling with addiction. Those circumstances are a big motivator and driving force for practicing medicine as I want to make positive change in my life and my family's. I think i'm having more luck at the progressive leaning schools
This is the school list I have so far: Just want to know if there are good ones I am missing, if I don't have enough mid tiers, or if there is a school on the list that I would have a low acceptance chance at like (not OOS friendly, or heavy service requirement, also kind of want to avoid a low yield school). I also want to avoid schools that are in the middle of nowhere unless it's in a nice nature setting like Vermont. Thank you to anyone who is willing to give feedback

UCSF, NYU, UCLA, Emory, Cornell, Columbia, UCSD, Baylor, Kaiser, Mt Sinai, mayo clinic- AZ, Dartmouth, Einstein, UCI, Quinnipiac, University of Colorado, UCD, george washington, SUNY Downstate, Stony Brook, Vermont, Miami Miller, USF Morsani, u of az- tucson, jefferson, san juan bautista, UTSW, UCF, New york medical, nyu long island, albany
Holistic healing part lol, I can tell you haven't even tried to understand DO.

What could hurt your application though would be trying to manage it while living in another country.

I also saw San Juan Batista on your list - I wouldn't recommend this school.
If you are quite fluent in Spanish you could apply to Ponce (Puerto Rico), Ponce St. Louis ( a new branch campus that just opened in the US this year so beware of its newness) and University of Puerto Rico.

I am proficient in Spanish currently, in an advanced class so I think I should be able to improve even more before starting school. I talked to an adcom at one of the Puerto Rican schools I forget which one and they said it should be ok. What’s wrong with San Juan Bautista? and thanks for the insight!

Well, I guess it's also a Puerto Rican school and accredited, just compare the retention rates/passing rates of these 3 PR schools and see which one seems most compatible with graduating and getting a residency.
